L'acacia au Sénégal
1996
Non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin plus cyclophosphamide as first-line therapy in elderly women with HER2 negative metastatic breast cancer.
2022
Background. The use of anthracyclines in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is limited by cumulative dose-dependent cardiotoxicity mostly in elderly women with comorbidities. The aim of this observational retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (Myocet®) and cyclophosphamide in elderly women as HER2 negative first-line MBC treatment. Methods. 84 elderly women >70 years of age (median age 78 years) with MBC HER2 negative were enrolled. Performance Status in 58 patients was ECOG-0 and in 26 patients was ECOG-1. Results. The drug was well tolerated, with overall response rates were >40%, median overall survival was 16.2 months (95%CI:14.6- 18.8…
Yeasts vectored by migratory birds collected in the Mediterranean island of Ustica and description of Phaffomyces usticensis f.a. sp. nov., a new spe…
2014
Nine yeast species belonging to genera Candida , Cryptococcus , Phaffomyces , Rhodotorula and Wickerhamomyces , and one species of Aureobasidium genus were isolated from the cloaca of migratory birds. Candida glabrata and C. inconspicua were the species most frequently isolated and Wickerhamomyces sylviae , which has recently been described as a new species isolated from bird cloaca, was again found. The majority of isolates showed the ability to grow up to 40 °C and/or at pH 3.0, two environmental conditions typical of the digestive tract of birds. The phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rRNA gene placed the cultures of Phaffomyces in a new lineage that differed from the close…

A chamber to test the response of radon detectors to changing environmental conditions.
2011
Radon risk assessment is carried out with accurate measurements with active or passive instrumentation. All radon detectors must be calibrated and tested using a radon chamber containing a known concentration of radon produced by specific sources of 226Ra. Some of the chambers can also be used to test the response of detectors as a function of environmental conditions. In this case, it can be inferred a calibration curve with respect to changing of the parameter considered. For this aim, a new chamber radon was designed and realized to perform both calibration of instruments and to study the detector response in a large range of variation of the environmental parameters (pressure, 700 - 110…
Advances in haploidentical stem cell transplantation for hematologic malignancies
2016
One of the most important advances in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is the use of alternative donors and cell sources, such as haploidentical transplants (haplo-HSCT) from family donors. Several approaches have been developed to overcome the challenging bidirectional alloreactivity. We discuss these approaches, including ex vivo T-cell-depleted grafts with megadose of CD34(+) cells, not requiring immunosuppression after allogeneic transplantation for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis, and other strategies using unmanipulated T-cell-replete grafts with intensive immunosuppression or post-transplantation cyclophosphamide to minimize the GVHD. We als…
Arsenic-induced DNA hypomethylation affects chromosomal instability in mammalian cells
2004
Early genetic instability induced in dividing V79-Cl3 Chinese hamster cells by inorganic arsenic, as demonstrated in our previous investigation, was evidenced by aneuploidy and nuclear abnormalities, but not by chromosomal rearrangements. Here we report the results of cytogenetic and morphological analyses performed on the progeny of cells dividing at the end of sodium arsenite treatment after they had been expanded through 120 generations (ASO cells) and then cloned. The acquired genetic instability persisted and was increased by highly unstable chromosomal rearrangements, namely dicentric chromosomes and telomeric associations, which were not seen following acute exposure. A peculiar find…
The Impact of Insulin on Low-dose Metronomic Vinorelbine and Mafosfamide in Breast Cancer Cells
2021
Background/aim Breast cancer (BC) may be affected by diabetes and anti-diabetic medication, as well as its therapeutic agents. Low-dose metronomic chemotherapy (LDMC) is an available treatment option in BC. We investigated the impact of insulin on low-dose metronomic vinorelbine and mafosfamide in BC cell lines. Materials and methods Human BC cell lines T-47D, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, BT-549 and non-tumorigenic breast cell line MCF-10A were exposed to 0.01 μg/ml and 10 μg/ml insulin in combination with low-dose metronomic vinorelbine or mafosfamide. The cell viability was determined after 24-72 hours using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Results Insulin, especi…
