Four new Candida cretensis strains isolated from Spanish fermented sausages (chorizo): Taxonomic and phylogenetic implications
2008
Four yeast strains were isolated from Spanish traditional fermented sausages (chorizo) spoiled by gas production. Using the classical identification procedures, they were identified as Debaryomyces hansenii. However, they fermented galactose and did not produce positive results in Debaryomyces differential medium (DDM), a growth medium highly specific for this species. Phylogenetic analysis showed identical sequences for the D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA gene and almost identical sequences for the 5.8S-ITS region with those of the recently described yeast species Candida cretensis. This result was confirmed by sequencing the gene encoding actin of the type and the new strains. Candida creten…
Polyphasic identification of yeasts isolated from bark of cork oak during the manufacturing process of cork stoppers.
2003
A two-step protocol was used for the identification of 52 yeasts isolated from bark of cork oak at initial stages of the manufacturing process of cork stoppers. The first step in the identification was the separation of the isolates into groups by their physiological properties and RFLPs of the ITS-5.8S rRNA gene. The second step was the sequencing of the D1/D2 domains of the 26S rRNA gene of selected isolates representing the different groups. The results revealed a predominance of basidiomycetous yeasts (11 species), while only two species represented the ascomycetous yeasts. Among the basidiomycetous yeasts, members representing the species Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae and Rhodotorula n…

1799
Ms. 930a, Nr. 8, Bl. 22r-23v Böttiger, Karl August. Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel, Weimar, d[en] 13.
Role of yeasts in table olive production
2008
Table olives are a traditional fermented vegetable of the Mediterranean countries, but their production and consumption are now spread all around the world. Yeasts can play a double role in this food. They are present throughout the fermentative process and it is generally accepted that they can produce compounds with important organoleptic attributes determining the quality and flavour of the final product. However, yeasts can also be spoilage microorganisms in olive fermentation/storage and packing causing gas pockets, swollen containers, cloudy brines and off-flavours and off-odours. Candida boidinii, Debaryomyces hansenii, Pichia anomala, P. membranifaciens, Rhodotorula glutinis and Sac…
Augšvācu rakstu valodas ienākšana Rīgas rātes kancelejā 16. gadsimtā
2015
2005
Central and North European harvestmen from the Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt (Arachnida: Opiliones). About 1100 individuals belonging to 32 opilionid species (300 series), mainly of German origin, were identified based on material provided by, and stored at, the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt (Main). A list of all species with habitat information is included. Comments on two remarkable species (Oligolophus hanseni, Odiellus spinosus) are given. The comments include the importance of some series as reference material from MARTENS (1978), additions to regional faunas and the expansion of the known distribution of some thermophilous species.
Killer toxins in new isolates of the yeasts Hanseniaspora uvarum and Pichia kluyveri
1985
From various habitats (plant material, fruits, soil), yeasts belonging to the species of Pichia kluyveri and Hanseniaspora uvarum were isolated that showed killer activity. According to the activity spectrum against other yeasts these strains belonged to 11 different groups that were distinguishable from the killer strains K1-K10. The isoelectric points of the killer proteins were in the range of pH 3.5–3.9, the activity optimum was observed at pH 4.2–4.6. Above pH 5 and above a temperature of 25–35°C the killer proteins were inactivated.
Non-conventional yeasts from fermented honey by-products: Focus on Hanseniaspora uvarum strains for craft beer production
2021
The increasing interest in novel beer productions focused on non-Saccharomyces yeasts in order to pursue their potential in generating groundbreaking sensory profiles. Traditional fermented beverages represent an important source of yeast strains which could express interesting features during brewing. A total of 404 yeasts were isolated from fermented honey by-products and identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Zygosaccharomyces rouxii and Hanseniaspora uvarum. Five H. uvarum strains were screened for their brewing capability. Interestingly, Hanseniaspora uvarum strains showed growth in presence of ethanol and hop and a more rapid growth…
Screening of Hanseniaspora Strains for the Production of Enzymes with Potential Interest for Winemaking
2015
Some non-Saccharomyces yeasts, including Hanseniaspora, participate in the first stages of wine fermentation. Besides their importance in the wine production process some of these yeasts have been described to be potential producers of hydrolytic enzymes to industrial level. In this work, we pretend to evaluate the technological abilities of the Hanseniaspora strains deposited in the Spanish Type Culture Collection (CECT). First of all, we considered verification of the correct identification of the strains using several miniaturized biochemical systems and molecular techniques (PCR, RFLP and sequencing of the ribosomal D1/D2 region). The results allowed us to verify the correct adscription…
Selection and molecular characterization of wine yeasts isolated from the ‘El Penedès’ area (Spain)
2000
Abstract A study of the microbiota present during the wine fermentation of five grape varieties from the ‘El Penedes’ area (Spain) was carried out to select autochthonous yeast strains for industrial wine production. In this study we identified members of the genera Candida, Dekkera, Hanseniaspora, Kluyveromyces, Torulaspora, Zygosaccharomyces and Saccharomyces in wine fermentation microbiota. Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as responsible agents of the alcoholic fermentation, were considered for a selection protocol. In this work we applied different enological criteria for selection, but previously we have characterized and differentiated Saccharomyces isolates by molecular methods t…
