Nanodroplets on a solid plane: wetting and spreading in a Monte Carlo simulation
2002
Abstract The wetting behavior and spreading dynamics of small polymer melt droplets in the course of transition from partial to complete wetting conditions on a flat structureless solid substrate have been studied by dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. From the density profiles of the drops we determine the contact angles at varying strength of the van der Waals surface forces in the whole interval of partial wetting. The validity of Young's equation is then tested whereby the surface tension of the melt/vapor interface is derived independently from interfacial fluctuation analysis, and the surface free energy of the melt at the substrate—from the anisotropy of the local pressure at the wall. Role of continuous moisture profile monitoring by inline NIR spectroscopy during fluid bed granulation of an Enalapril formulation
2010
Granulation and tableting are closely related process steps in the supply chain of pharmaceutical products. Even today, these steps are still optimized independently by trial and error. On the framework of a process analytical technology approach, these processes were evaluated in an integrated approach. Enalapril maleate is a low-dose drug substance with poor granulating and tableting behavior. In order to verify how granulation influences tableting properties, different granulation experiments were performed.Granulation experiments with fast spraying rate and fast drying as well as fast spraying rate and slow drying, and also combinations of both were run. The obtained granules were then …
Effect of different bleaching protocols on whitening efficiency and enamel superficial microhardness
2018
Background Tooth bleaching is a popular aesthetic treatment to modify the color of teeth. Despite the extensive literature concerning the subject, there is still no consensus regarding the application mode of the different bleaching agents and their effect on enamel. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of different bleaching protocols on whitening efficiency and enamel superficial hardness. Material and methods Bovine enamel fragments were embedded in acrylic resin and wet-sanded to obtain a flat buccal surface. The specimens were then randomly divided into 6 groups (n=10), based on the bleaching material [HP Maxx 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide), HP Blue 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide + C…
Reverse Monte Carlo modeling of thermal disorder in crystalline materials from EXAFS spectra
2012
Abstract In this work we present the Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling scheme, designed to probe the local structural and thermal disorder in crystalline materials by fitting the wavelet transform (WT) of the EXAFS signal. Application of the method to the analysis of the Ge K-edge and Re L3-edge EXAFS signals in crystalline germanium and rhenium trioxide, respectively, is presented with special attention to the problem of thermal disorder and related phenomena.
Polymer-enforced crystallization of a eutectic binary hard sphere mixture
2010
We prepared a buoyancy matched binary mixture of polydisperse polystyrene microgel spheres of size ratio 0.785 and at a volume fraction of 0.567 just below the kinetic glass transition. In line with theoretical expectations, a eutectic phase behavior was observed, but only a minor fraction of the samples crystallized at all. By adding a short non-adsorbing polymer we enforce inter-species fractionation into coexisting pure component crystals, which in turn also shows signs of intra-species fractionation. We show that in formerly inaccessible regions of the phase diagram binary hard sphere physics is made observable using attractive hard spheres. Ancillary files: Correction to Soft Matter 20…
Fabrication and Characterization of Double- and Single-Clamped CuO Nanowire Based Nanoelectromechanical Switches
2021
Electrostatically actuated nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches hold promise for operation with sharply defined ON/OFF states, high ON/OFF current ratio, low OFF state power consumption, and a compact design. The present challenge for the development of nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) technology is fabrication of single nanowire based NEM switches. In this work, we demonstrate the first application of CuO nanowires as NEM switch active elements. We develop bottom-up and top-down approaches for NEM switch fabrication, such as CuO nanowire synthesis, lithography, etching, dielectrophoretic alignment of nanowires on electrodes, and nanomanipulations for building devices that are suitable f…
Particle Detectors made of High Resistivity Czochralski Grown Silicon
2004
We describe the fabrication process of fullsize silicon microstrip detectors processed on silicon wafers grown by magnetic Czochralski method. Defect analysis by DLTS spectroscopy as well as minority carrier lifetime measurements by µPCD method are presented. The electrical and detection properties of the Czochralski silicon detectors are comparable to those of leading commercial detector manufacturers. The radiation hardness of the Czochralski silicon detectors was proved to be superior to the devices made of traditional Float Zone silicon material.
Mode expansion for the density profiles of crystal–fluid interfaces: hard spheres as a test case
2012
We present a technique for analyzing the full three-dimensional density profiles of a planar crystal-fluid interface in terms of density modes. These density modes can also be related to crystallinity order parameter profiles which are used in coarse-grained, phase field type models of the statics and dynamics of crystal-fluid interfaces and are an alternative to crystallinity order parameters extracted from simulations using local crystallinity criteria. We illustrate our results for the hard sphere system using finely-resolved, three-dimensional density profiles from density functional theory of fundamental measure type.
Atmosphere-induced change of microhardness and plasticity of C60 single crystals and polycrystalline films
1998
Abstract The effect of air exposure and visible light illumination on the microhardness, plasticity and dislocation mobility in the C60 single crystals was investigated. Microhardness values for defined structural states of the fullerene (pristine, oxygen-intercalated, photo-oxidized) are reported. It has been shown that oxygen intercalation in the fullerene lattice during air-aging in the dark results in the suppression of dislocation mobility. However, only a slight increase in the hardness of oxygenated samples was observed. A remarkable increase in the hardness and decrease in the plasticity of the C60 crystals under illumination-assisted air exposure was noted. Photochemical transforma…
Spherical microgel colloids - Hard spheres from soft matter
1998
While gels are usually considered to be soft materials, we demonstrate that it is possible to model hard sphere behaviour when the gel structure is confined to spherical objects of sizes in the colloidal range. We have measured the static structure factor of microgel spheres dispersed in good solvents, differing in size, crosslink density and swelling behaviour, by light scattering and small angle neutron scattering. Comparing with theoretical calculations for polydisperse hard spheres we show how the interactions in highly concentrated dispersions of spherical microgel colloids are determined by an interplay of the relative length of dangling polymer ends at the surface (determined by the …
