Connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets

We present a study on connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets by means of Monte Carlo simulation. We interpret our results using a contact-volume argument based on an effective single--particle cell model. It is commonly assumed that the percolation threshold of anisotropic objects scales as their inverse aspect ratio. While this rule has been shown to hold for rod-like particles, we find that for hard plate-like particles the percolation threshold is non-monotonic in the aspect ratio. Fast prototyping of a SoC-based smart-camera: a real-time fall detection case study

Abstract Background Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) or simulator sickness is often elicited by a visual stimulus that lacks the appropriate vestibular or proprioceptive feedback. In this study, we chose to investigate the effects of brightness and contrast of the visual scene on VIMS. Hypothesis We hypothesized that visual environments differing in brightness or contrast would differentially induce VIMS. We have studied by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of ${\text{Ni}}_{2}{\text{Mo}}_{3}\text{N}$, ${\text{Co}}_{3}{\text{Mo}}_{3}\text{N}$, and ${\text{Fe}}_{3}{\text{Mo}}_{3}\text{N}$. We also report ab initio computing modeling of the high-pressure properties of these compounds, ${\text{Pd}}_{2}{\text{Mo}}_{3}\text{N}$ and ${\text{Pt}}_{2}{\text{Mo}}_{3}\text{N}$. We have found that the nitrides remain stable in the ambient-pressure cubic structure at least up to 50 GPa and determined their equation of state. Abstract This study is devoted to the experimental investigation of the turbulent melt motion in a square crucible where the flow is created by Lorentz forces generated by an external AC magnetic field. As a strong vertical thermal gradient is present in melt during a directional solidification process, a stratification effect takes place and motion in the vertical direction is damped by buoyancy forces. AbstractGiven a prescribed boundary of a Bezier surface, we compare the Bezier surfaces generated by two different methods, i.e., the Bezier surface minimising the biharmonic functional and the unique Bezier surface solution of the biharmonic equation with prescribed boundary. Although often the two types of surfaces look visually the same, we show that they are indeed different. In this paper, we provide a theoretical argument showing why the two types of surfaces are not always the same.
