Spectrum of novel mutations found in Waardenburg syndrome types 1 and 2: implications for molecular genetic diagnostics
2013
Objectives Till date, mutations in the genes PAX3 and MITF have been described in Waardenburg syndrome (WS), which is clinically characterised by congenital hearing loss and pigmentation anomalies. Our study intended to determine the frequency of mutations and deletions in these genes, to assess the clinical phenotype in detail and to identify rational priorities for molecular genetic diagnostics procedures. Design Prospective analysis. Patients 19 Caucasian patients with typical features of WS underwent stepwise investigation of PAX3 and MITF . When point mutations and small insertions/deletions were excluded by direct sequencing, copy number analysis by multiplex ligation-dependent probe …
Transient birefringence of polymer melts in intermittent shear flow: Model analysis of the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour
1977
A non-linear viscoelastic model has been used to interpret transient flow birefringence in changing shear flow for a polymer melt. It is shown how the new model is consistent with the basic hypothesis of the linear stress-optical law. Stress growth in shear flow and relaxation after different amounts of shearing are compared with the predictions of the non-linear model. A good agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions is found.
Audiological Findings in Children With Mucopolysaccharidoses Type I–IV
2017
Abstract Objective The aim of our study is to reflect hearing impairment of 23 children diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I, II, III and IV. Methods Retrospective study of the clinical, audiological and treatment (medical vs surgical) findings of 23 children diagnosed with MPS type I, II, III and IV followed at a Tertiary Referral Hospital between 1997 and 2015. Results Six cases of MPS I, 8 of MPS II, 4 of MPS III and 5 of MPS IV were reviewed. 71.2% of patients had secretory otitis media (SOM) and 54% of patients had some type of hearing loss (HL). The behaviour of hearing loss was variable in each of the subgroups of MPS, finding greater involvement and variability in types…
Understanding the role of cross-language transfer of phonological awareness in emergent Hindi–English biliteracy acquisition
2022
AbstractThis study examined within and cross-language relations, and specifically, the role of phonological awareness (PA) skills in reading among young Hindi-speaking children (L1) who were learning to read English (L2) in Delhi, India. Data was collected from 143 children in Grades 1 and 2 using measures validated for this population. The analyses examined the associations between L1 and L2 PA and decoding, both within and across the two languages. The results showed that PA skills within each language significantly predicted decoding in that language. Furthermore, there was evidence of cross-language transfer with Hindi PA significantly predicting English word reading even after controll…
Socio-emotional Problems Experienced by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Ethiopia
2015
This study compares the socio-emotional problems experienced by deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students with those of hearing students in Ethiopia. The research involved a sample of 103 grade 4 students attending a special school for the deaf, a special class for the deaf and a regular school. Socio-emotional problems were measured using Goodman's self-report measure, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for children and adolescents. Participants were selected from seven towns in Ethiopia. The results show that, compared to the hearing sample, the DHH students experienced more severe socio-emotional problems across all dimensions, regardless of whether they were in special classes o…

How to improve communication with deaf children in the dental clinic
2007
It may be difficult for hearing-impaired people to communicate with people who hear. In the health care area, there is often little awareness of the communication barriers faced by the deaf and, in dentistry, the attitude adopted towards the deaf is not always correct. A review is given of the basic rules and advice given for communicating with the hearing-impaired. The latter are classified in three groups ? lip-readers, sign language users and those with hearing aids. The advice given varies for the different groups although the different methods of communication are often combined (e.g. sign language plus lip-reading, hearing-aids plus lip-reading). Treatment of hearing-impaired children…
