Activation cross-sections for some 14·8 MeV neutron-induced nuclear reactions on caesium: Isomer ratios of 134Cs, 133Xe and 130I

Abstract Absolute cross-sections for 14·8 MeV neutron-induced reactions on 133Cs were determined using the activation technique. The results, with maximum errors of 15 per cent, are: ρ(n,γ)=7·1 mb (ρ(n,γ) 134m Cs =1·82 mb , ρ(n,γ) 134g Cs =5·3 mb ; ρ(n,2n) 132 Cs =1620 mb ; ρ(n,p)=10·5 mb (ρ(n,p) 133m Xe =4·8 mb , ρ(n,p) 133g Xe =5·7 mb ; ρ(n,α)=1·14 mb (ρ(n,α) 130m I =0·54 mb , ρ(n,α) 130g I =0·6 mb ; ρ(n, 3 He ) 131 I =3·2 μ barn ; ρ(n,2p) 132 I ⩽12 μ barn . At this particle energy direct interaction processes also contribute. The isomer cross-section ratios σ m σ g for 134Cs, 133Xe and 130I are 0·34±0·08, 0·85±0·15 and 0·91±0·2 respectively. Compression of Polarized 3He

This article gives a status report on the polarized 3He target development work at Mainz. It is based on the optical pumping of the 3S1 state of 3He with subsequent metastability spin exchange to the ground state atoms. This pumping scheme is very efficient at 3He pressures of about 1 Torr; for high density targets, however, a mechanical compression of the polarized gas is needed in a second step. First results with a Toepler compression pump look promising and will be discussed in the following.

A new limit of the 129 Xenon Electric Dipole Moment

We report on the first preliminary result of our 129Xe EDM measurement performed by the MIXed collaboration. The aim of this report is to demonstrate the feasibility of a new method to set limits on nuclear EDMs by investigating the EDM of the diamagnetic 129Xe atoms. In our setup, hyperpolarized 3He serves as a comagnetometer needed to suppress magnetic field fluctuations. The free induction decay of the two polarized spin species is directly measured by low noise DC SQUIDs, and the weighted phase difference extracted from these measurements is used to determine a preliminary upper limit on the 129Xe EDM.

Elastic Constants of Quantum Solids by Path Integral Simulations

Two methods are proposed to evaluate the second-order elastic constants of quantum mechanically treated solids. One method is based on path-integral simulations in the (NVT) ensemble using an estimator for elastic constants. The other method is based on simulations in the (NpT) ensemble exploiting the relationship between strain fluctuations and elastic constants. The strengths and weaknesses of the methods are discussed thoroughly. We show how one can reduce statistical and systematic errors associated with so-called primitive estimators. The methods are then applied to solid argon at atmospheric pressures and solid helium 3 (hcp, fcc, and bcc) under varying pressures. Good agreement with …

The T[sub z] = −1→ T[sub z] =0 beta decays and comparison with Charge Exchange reactions

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions can be studied in both β decay and charge exchange (CE) reactions. If isospin is a good quantum number, then the Tz = −1→0 and Tz = +1→0 GT mirror transitions, are identical. Therefore, a comparison of the results from studies of β decay and CE should shed light on this assumption. Accordingly we have studied the β decay of the Tz = −1 fp‐shell nuclei, 54Ni, 50Fe, 46Cr, and 42Ti, produced in fragmentation and we have compared our results with the spectra from (3He, t) measurements on the mirror Tz = +1 target nuclei studied in high resolution at RCNP, Osaka. The β decay experiments were performed as part of the STOPPED beam RISING campaign at GSI.

The critical pressures {ital P}{sub {ital c}} at which liquid {sup 4}He and {sup 3}He each become macroscopically unstable are determined from two kinds of microscopic calculations that reproduce the equation of state. The behavior of the sound velocity {ital c} around this critical pressure is analyzed, and the critical exponent in {ital c}{proportional to}({ital P}{minus}{ital P}{sub {ital c}}){sup {nu}} is found to be {nu}=1/4. A comparison with empirical analysis is also done.

Very long nuclear relaxation times of spin polarized helium 3 in metal coated cells

Abstract We obtained very long relaxation times T 1 of up to 120 h for the nuclear polarization of an optically pumped helium 3 gas. The glass containers were internally coated with metallic films such as bismuth or cesium. These findings will have applications in the field of helium magnetometers and polarized targets.

Gamow-Teller strengths in proton-rich exotic nuclei deduced in the combined analysis of mirror transitions

Isospin symmetry is expected for the T-z=+/- 1 -> 0 isobaric analogous transitions in isobars with mass number A, where T-z is the z component of isospin T. Assuming this symmetry, strengths of analogous Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions within A=50 isobars were determined from a high energy-resolution T-z=+1 -> 0, Cr-50(He-3,t)Mn-50 study at 0 degrees in combination with the decay Q value and lifetime from the T-z=-1 -> 0, Fe-50 ->Mn-50 beta decay. This method can be applied to other pf-shell nuclei and can be used to study GT strengths of astrophysical interest.

Theory of the n = 2 levels in muonic helium-3 ions

The present knowledge of Lamb shift, fine-, and hyperfine structure of the 2S and 2P states in muonic helium-3 ions is reviewed in anticipation of the results of a first measurement of several 2S → 2P transition frequencies in the muonic helium-3 ion, μ3He+. This ion is the bound state of a single negative muon μ- and a bare helium-3 nucleus (helion), 3He++. A term-by-term comparison of all available sources, including new, updated, and so far unpublished calculations, reveals reliable values and uncertainties of the QED and nuclear structure-dependent contributions to the Lamb shift and the hyperfine splitting.
