Sport and Ethics of Weak Thought: A New Manifesto for Sport Education

2013

Abstract The so-called “weak thought”, theorized by the Italian postmodernist philosopher Gianni Vattimo (born in 1936), considered one of the most important Italian philosophers, has dismantled the main concepts on which Western philosophy was based (that is, the notion of Truth, God, Reason, an absolute foundation to thought, etc.). This philosophy, which is inspired by Nietzsche’s nihilism, by Heidegger, and by the philosophy of hermeneutics and deconstruction, offers a critical starting point not only to rethink, in a less rigid way, our Western culture, its philosophy, and its problems, but also the ethical principles and educational values that guide human life. Sport - as a human phe…

A Hermeneutical Analysis of the InternalistApproachin the Philosophy of Sport

2015

Abstract In this paper, we make a hermeneutical analysis of internalism, the dominant tradition in the philosophy of sports. In order to accomplish this, we identify the prejudices that guide the internalist view of sports, namely the Platonic-Analytic prejudice introduced by Suits, one of the forefathers of internalism. Then, we critically analyze four consequences of following such a prejudice: a) its reductive nature, b) the production of a unrealistic view of sports, c) the vagueness of the idea of excellence; and d) the leap from the descriptive analysis of the sporting phenomenon to the setting of normative requirements for the practice of sports.

Nine Rules of Engagement: Reflections on Reflexivity

2019

Wishing to be reflexive, to critically examine our assumptions, is easy. Doing it is less so. For researchers doing a study in their own professional field, it represents a particular challenge. In this essay, I explore this challenge using my own study as exemplar. I am researching workplace inclusion of workers with intellectual disability. As a professional, I have worked with and for people with intellectual disability for many years. The knowledge I bring to my inquiry – about the inabilities, vulnerabilities and needs ascribed to persons labelled thus – is deeply entrenched in common culture, as well as in my professional training. How can I handle this knowledge in my research? To wh…

Striving to maintain a dignified life for the patient in transition: Next of kin’s experiences during the transition process of an older person in tr…

2015

Next of kin represent significant resources in the care for older patients. The aim of this study was to describe and illuminate the meaning of the next of kin’s experiences during the transition of an older person with continuing care needs from hospital to home. The study has a phenomenological hermeneutic design. Individual, narrative interviews were conducted, and the data analysis was conducted in accordance with Lindseth and Norberg’s phenomenological hermeneutic method. Two themes and four subthemes were identified and formulated. The first theme: “Balancing vulnerability and strength,” encompassed the subthemes “enduring emotional stress” and “striving to maintain security and conti…

Honouring the opening: Unfolding the rich ground between the philosophical thinking of Martin Heidegger and practice-based empirical work

2021

The aim of this article is to bring philosophical thinking closer to practice-based empirical work. Using Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, it offers a bridge between these two worlds, attempting to provide philosophical depth to the findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. This process unfolded through the appearance of three intertwined, potential, meaningful modes of being in the lifeworld: space as a condition for being and being for worlding the world; temporal and spatial self-being, the existence of multiple selves in time and space; and suffering and thriving as modes of being. The article extends the dialogue and concludes with key reflections and insight for research practic…

U.I.R.D.A. – Unbuilt Italian Rationalism Digital Archive

2018

For twenty years, the architecture of Italian rationalism through the digital modelling has been investigated. Very often, the production of a model and the consequent representation of tridimensional views, in many case studies, as outcome of the research on architecture have been considered. Actually, the digital model, intended as a critical tool, has to be conceived as a ‘starting point' for graphic analysis of architecture and not as the outcome. Indeed, it is associated to other graphics, sometimes not ‘deducted' from the model, useful for the understanding/translation of architecture. The construction of the model is not the construction of a simple image, operation, which is often c…

Golden Ratio: Indicates the ratio between the two dimensions of which the major is the mean proportional between the minor and the sum of the two. Graphic Reading: Reading and understanding operation of an architecture through its decomposition into volumetric and geometric parts graphically expressed through an additional language. Harmonic Ratios: Geometric ratios between pure shapes traceable also in music that enable us to understand the spatial logic of drawn architecture. Hermeneutic Analysis: Interpretive approach adopted in the graphic analysis of an architecture drawing leading to the seeking of further key interpretations of the work itself. Redrawing: Graphic restitution of one or more archive drawings obtained by an interpretative practice of the project and expressed through the codes of representation that provide new information on architecture. Volumetric Analysis: Graphic analysis related to spatial logics that exist between the tridimensional elements of architecture read through schemes orthogonal projections and geometric analysis.Settore ICAR/17 - DisegnobusinessClassicsRationalism (international relations)

The article outlines the outstanding relevance of Dalibor Vesely an architect and teacher who has recently disappeared. He was born and brought up in Czechoslovakia but, since the early Sixties, he has lived in London where he was considered an authority for his insightful approach to architecture. The article is focused on his conception o…

Family Relationships, Dialogue, and Philosophy for Children:

2021

The paper deals with the importance of words and dialogue in family education. In the first part, some evidence of an action research is presented – shaped in a hermeneutic phenomenological framework and thanks to the Philosophy for Children method and materials. Then some key words are pointed out, meant as formative goals for parents’ educational support, so as to highlight the importance of dialogue among generations and, mainly, of the ethical responsibility of parents in education.

Karl-Otto Apel’s discourse ethics in dialogue with Charles Taylor’s hermeneutical ethics

2019

The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of the philosophical legacy of Karl-Otto Apel in light of the dialogue with th…
