Technical Identity in a MergerProcess—Between a Rock and a Hard Place
2020
AbstractUniversity mergers are sites of self-reflection where the identities of the institutions in question are juxtaposed and challenged. We examine the organisational identity of a Finnish single-faculty technical university in the context of a merger process with a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university and a university of applied sciences. Through interview data, we shed light on the self-conception of the technical university compared with the other higher education institutions. According to our analysis, the identity of the technical university is constructed and represented in relation to the aspects of society and entrepreneurialism, academic discipline and, particularly, the…
Active learning in digital communications with low-cost software defined radio
2021
Meaningful learning in business through serious games
2017
Purpose: The requirements of a business executive include the talent and creativity to solve problems and adapt to continuous changes presented by the economic and social environment. However, the university does not often prepare students in these skills. Businesses simulations are didactic tools in which participants assume a role and make decisions which affect the results of the company. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of business simulations in university teaching. Design/methodology: We have implemented business simulations in a course in the College of Economics at the University of Valencia, during the 2015-2016 academic year. Questionnaires were u…

Social and Economic Conditions of Student Life in Europe. National Profile of Latvia. Eurostudent IV, 2008-2011
2011
In Latvia the Eurostudent survey was carried out according to the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science and was carried out by the Marketing and public opinion research centre SKDS. In Latvia the sample size was 2000 including students from public and private universities in full time study programs. The quota sampling method was applied and only one private higher education institution declined to participate. The survey included 11.9% of respondents from ISCED 5B level and 2.6% from ISCED 6 level students. These groups of respondents were excluded from the international report, thus the sample for the international analysis is 1709 respondents. The sample is representative…
The Role of Internal and External Stakeholders
2015
The importance attributed to stakeholder issues in contemporary higher education affairs across the globe is a reflection of the changing nature of the social pact between higher education and society, brokered via the state, with new notions of trust and accountability as well as responsiveness to societal needs and demands as key attributes. This chapter takes stock of the key findings across the BRICS as per the individual contributions presented in part III of this volume.
Personal goals and well-being: How do young people navigate their lives?
2010
This chapter examines development through different life transitions, such as educational transitions and transition to parenthood during adolescence to adulthood in the context of the life-span model of personal goals. According to the life-span model of motivation, four key mechanisms—channeling, choice, co-regulation, and compensation—play a key role in how young people navigate their life. The aim is to describe how the conceptualized key factors are helpful in understanding the changes from adolescence to emerging adulthood and later in the life course and related well-being. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Resisting within the neoliberalising academy: reflections on doing transformative doctoral research
2020
This paper reflects on the authors' experiences in doing transformative research in two countries of South East Europe - Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, during their doctoral studies abroad – United Kingdom and Finland. Within the neoliberal context of academia which celebrates ‘success stories’, research committed to change and action may not always be welcomed and may even be considered as a pathway to ‘failure’. Reflecting on this type of 'failure' and 'opportunity' through our personal stories, we debate how we can resist neoliberalisation in academia from within and promote an anti-oppressive and empowering place of hope and change. peerReviewed
Investigation of University Students’ Perceptions of Their Educators as Role Models and Designers of Digitalized Curricula
2020
Higher education graduates need 21st-century skills, both learning skills and competences for working with technology. However, research indicates an insufficient integration of ICTs into teaching and learning. In this paper, we examine students’ perception of various technology-based issues: (a) ICT integration within a Slovenian university’s learning environment, (b) teachers as role models for ICT use, and (c) the processes of collaboration and creativity as integrative parts featured in learning technologies. We studied beliefs about the contribution of ICT use to teaching and learning as the primary factors influencing ICT integration. A one-way ANOVA revealed that students in teacher …
