Higher education and economic development in the OECD: policy lessons for other countries and regions

2016

ABSTRACTThis paper sheds light on the role of tertiary or higher education in economic development across two successful OECD case studies: Finland and South Korea. A number of key aspects are discussed, from the nature of the social contract between higher education and the economy to the endogenous characteristics of domestic higher education to the links between the sector and regional development, innovation and the labour market. The lessons learned are of importance to policy makers and institutional planners across the world, not least to less developing nations and regions, due to the unprecedented opportunities brought by a global, knowledge-based economy.

The Responsible University in Southeast Asia : A Tale of the Transition from an Elite to a Mass Higher Education System

2019

AbstractAs is the case in the Nordic countries, universities in Southeast Asia are expected to act in a responsible manner by fostering greater participation in higher education across different social groups and by promoting regional development. To date, however, few studies have investigated such important aspects within the context of emerging economies undergoing considerable political, social and economic changes. Our study setting is Indonesia, a country with large socio-economic asymmetries that is undergoing the historical transition from an elite to a mass higher education system. The chapter provides evidence of the roles played by different types of universities located in speci…

Different meanings of ´knowledge as commodity` in the context of higher education

2013

Commodification has been and still is one of the key processes within capitalist market economies. Since the 1970s, different forms of knowledge have increasingly been subjected to this process. In this paper the commodification of knowledge in the field of higher education is defined in a broad sense as an example of the intensive enlargement of capitalism. I argue that knowledge shares some features of public goods and can be subjected to commodification both as an educational product and academic research itself. However, the simple dichotomy of public vs. private good is not nuanced enough to understand the status of knowledge within higher education. How to reconstruct this dichotomy,…

Cuando el aprendizaje basado en la práctica profesional no provoca un interés laboral

2021

The link between the academic and the professional has become an essential element in promoting the educational quality of today’s University. Reflections on Interculturality in Relation to Education and Work

2005

Internationalization and intercultural education may be contradictory concepts as the former supports globalization of the economy and the latter explains mutual learning and intercultural understanding. Higher education is preparing planners, leaders, managers, administrators, policy-makers and teachers to societies. Are pedagogical approaches of higher education inspiring students to become aware of social processes such as multiculturalism and interculturalism? Higher education includes beliefs and explanations that reveal how far diversity is being valued. A choice of critical pedagogy, that is considering the entire society, world order and different groups of societies, is discussed. …

Trusting Trust in the Context of Higher Education: The Potential Limits of the Trust Concept

2010

There is a convincing body of empirical evidence supporting the benefits of trust. A number of recent publications have paid a great deal of attention to possible negative consequences of the trusting process, but there has been little interdisciplinary focus on the potentially unconstructive aspects of the trusting process between learners and teaching authorities. The authors argue here that unmonitored student trust in a teacher's expertise in the context of higher education might sabotage the use and development of higher cognitive skills (for example, the ability for critical thinking), and that the direct consequence of this is a further amplification of the existing asymmetrical dis…
