Higher Education in Management: The Case of Spain
2017
The history of the management education system in Spain can be described by breaking it down into four periods: (1) the emergence of the management education system, (2) the creation of formal university studies and foundation of management/economics faculties (under pre-democratic laws), (3) the structuration and universalization of the management education system (under democratic laws) and (4) the current management education system (after the implementation of the European higher education reform, or Bologna declaration). (1) Emergence of the management education system (up to 1943): The university education system in Spain is one of the oldest in Europe. The University of Salamanca was…
How Effective are Business Ethics/CSR Courses in Higher Education?
2016
AbstractConcern is increasing worldwide for introducing dedicated courses on business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in higher education curricula. In this study, awareness of business ethics is investigated from a sample of 307 undergraduate and postgraduate management students at a Polish university. This investigation aims at assessing management students’ awareness of business ethics issues, focusing on the potential differences in such perceptions depending on previous business ethics/CSR courses taken. Surprisingly, our results do not match prior findings in the extant literature. Notably, in our sample, having taken previous courses on business ethics/CSR does not p…
Mechanisms of common ground in case-based web discussions in teacher education
2002
Previous studies suggest that before participants in web-based conferencing can reach deeper level interaction and learning, they have to gain an adequate level of common ground in terms of shared mutual understanding, knowledge, beliefs, assumptions, and presuppositions (Clark & Schaefer, 1989; Dillenbourg, 1999). In this paper, the purpose is to explore how participants establish and maintain common ground in order to reach deeper level interaction in case-based web discussions. The subjects in this study consisted of 68 preservice teachers and 7 mentors from 3 universities, who participated in a web-based conferencing course for 8 weeks. The written discussion data were analyzed by means…
Languages and New Technologies: Learning Digital Portfolio in the Stylistics of English
2016
The new perspective of the European Higher Education Area involves new methodologies which foster the information and communication technologies (ICTs). Educating (i.e. teaching and learning) by means of the European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) produced some very significant changes in issues such as “permanent learning and active learning” (Barragan 2009: 2) and ‘learning by means of (professional) competences’ which entail new learning methodologies and new evaluation processes.
Estimating the Number of Changepoints in Segmented Regression Models: Comparative Study and Application
2020
This paper deals with the problem of selecting the number of changepoints in segmented regression models. The aim is to review selection criteria, namely information criteria and hypothesis testing, and to propose a novel application in the context of students' careers in higher education. The performance of the selection criteria is assessed through simulation studies. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between University students' performance and one of its main determinants, finding out that this relationship is actually broken-line.
A Corpus Study of Ideology-Driven Discourse Practice: The University Language Learner as Researcher. The Case of Prepositions
2016
It is widely acknowledged that both language learners and teachers have benefitted in many ways from the implementation of ICTs in and outside the classroom, and continue to do so. The range of skills that students, as future professionals, are required to master has risen exponentially in recent times, partly as a result of these technological developments. The implementation of ICTs has been coupled with a focus in higher education on exploring new ways of encouraging creativity in teaching and learner autonomy, both areas having gained ground recently in teaching practices (Weimer 2002). In this context, open-minded instructors should accept ICTs not just as simple gadgets, blindly adapt…
Some considerations on adapting academic qualifications to the Romanian labor market
2017
The paper presents the results of some research carried out by the authors during the activities of the “Academic Entrepreneurial Laboratory – Progress through Innovation and Practice – (Univers Practic)” and seeks to evince certain key aspects pertaining to the adaptation of university qualifications to the needs of the Romanian workforce. First, the general context of higher education and the current state of affairs, as reflected by the analysis of relevant works in the field are presented. This is followed by a presentation of the main results of a questionnaire-based study that evinces the opinions of students, graduates, and company managers with regard to the necessity of adapting ac…
Do We should Care about Future Participation of Students in the Labour Market?
2014
Abstract The communication presents a theoretical reflection based on the fact that as educational level advances, the unemployment rate decreases. Based on this, we set out what should be the place employability should occupy in higher education. We found that the labour market demands professionals with skills related to creative imagination and innovation capabilities; and these are developed through an education that nurtures students’ curiosity and also linked to the vital concerns of learners. We need to rethink and reflect on the role teachers should play, besides mastering the theoretical knowledge of the disciplines they teach, teachers should become designers and developers of lea…
The dimensions of social dynamics in comparative studies on higher education
2013
This article discusses social dynamics of higher education which is one of the most crucial but neglected perspectives in comparative studies of higher education. We pay attention to the importance of time, space and contexts—both geographical and socio-cultural ones—to reveal how they influence on different social dynamics in various systems of higher education. The article focuses on the national higher education system level. Theoretically we approach higher education systems from a relational perspective paying attention to dynamics created by changing relationships between different actors in cultural, geographical and historical contexts. peerReviewed
