When mergers fail: a case study on the critical role of external stakeholders in merger initiatives

2015

ABSTRACTOne can, in principle, identify numerous arguments for mergers in higher education (HE), including efficiency, diversity, quality, and regional needs. This diversity can be explained by the growing societal interest in the sector, not least concerning the contributions from HE to society at large. However, research on merger processes has tended to prefer intra- and inter-institutional dynamics within the HE sector, paying less attention to the role of external stakeholders, and their view concerning the arguments for mergers. This paper argues that merger outcomes are heavily dependent on the role and actions taken by external stakeholders. Through the analysis of a failed merger a…

Testing the Trust Game with undergraduates: An experiment with wealth heterogeneity

2017

Ponència presentada a 3rd International Conference on Higher Education Advances, HEAd’17, Universitat Politècnica de València, València, 2017 Trust, reciprocity and a fair distribution of resources are cruzial in the sustainability of any economic system. As a matter of fact, those are values that should be promoted among the new generations, especially among university students enrolled in degrees that are related to economics. Under this context, we are interested in enhancing criticism and active reflection among undergraduates with respect to social values. With such a goal in mind, we designed a two step classroom task that includes playing the Trust Game (TG) in the first place and, s…

Research-Based Social Work Profession in the Finnish Welfare State

2021

This chapter examines the Finnish model of social work education from the perspective of the European system of higher education. The analysis is framed by the fast development of the social-democratic welfare state. Formalised social worker education started in 1942 as a two-year bachelor’s degree that was vocationally oriented with the purpose of providing municipalities a sufficient labour force. From the 1970s onwards, social work education started its process of academisation, and in 1994 social work became its own scientific discipline. Currently, Finnish social work education places strong emphasis on research and research-based understanding of social work. Social work education is …
