The institutional isomorphism in the context of organizational changes in higher education institutions
2019
This article deals with the institutional theory and isomorphism, from the processes of organizational change in higher education institutions. In a first phase, we analyze, through a questionnaire, the situations and causes of change in higher education institutions (HEI), more precisely in the field knowledge of Physical Education in Colombia. Afterwards, through a multiple case study, we analyze both the pressures of the environment that force HEI to change and the types of isomorphism. The results show the existence of the three types of isomorphism in a process of change where the National and Institutional governments exert coercive pressures. Other HEIs in similar situations exert mi…
Difficulties in learning the concept of electric field
1998
This article analyzes students' main difficulties in learning the concept of the electric field. To carry out this analysis we have supposed that the historical study of the main qualitative leaps that have taken place in the construction of the theory of field may help to diagnose such difficulties. Thus, we have made a brief description of the main conceptual profiles within which electric interactions can be interpreted (Coulombian and Maxwellian) and examined to what extent they are used by students in sixth form and in university. To achieve this we have devised and applied an open question questionnaire and personal. The results obtained showed that most students, even university stud…
The Bologna Process in Finland
2007
The aim of this chapter is to analyse how the Bologna Process influences Finnish higher education by examining what changes are related to or caused by it. The study focuses first on the social field of national higher education policy-making, and second on the study of higher education institutions examined from the perspective of academic basic units. The study is based on critical analysis of national policy documents and on a qualitative case study conducted at the University of Jyvaskyla in the spring term of 2004. The qualitative case study was based on thematic focus group interviews. The themes of the interview can be found in the Appendix 1. In order to reach a more comprehensive u…
Planning for Sustainability: Between Risks and Lifeworlds
2015
In this chapter, Planning for sustainability: Between risks and lifeworlds, Mikaela Vasstrom and Hans Kjetil Lysgard present ideas of a planning study that takes a critical perspective on planning. What are the alternative planning ideas? Planning is a field where different paradigms meet. How can one approach that? Their suggestion is a combination of participatory and critical planning. There is a strong account of planning and sustainability with better links between planning and Higher Education. Empowerment may provide a connection. For both planning and education, we need an understanding of context. The discussion of universities is thought-provoking.
Job Satisfaction Determinants of Tertiary Graduates in Europe
2015
Abstract Factors affecting the job satisfaction of tertiary graduates are studied using recent data on 13 European countries from 2010–11. Special attention is given to differences between bachelors and masters. It is found that in many countries, master's degree decreases job satisfaction. Moreover, it never increases the job satisfaction of female employees. Masters are more sensitive than bachelors to career opportunities, variety in work and whether learning is required in the job; while bachelors are more sensitive to the risk of moving to a less interesting job and monetary compensation. Overeducation generally does not affect the job satisfaction of bachelors, but strongly decreases …
The Relationship between General Intelligence and Media Use among University Students
2020
Students’ information selection process might be influenced by their choice of media sources, their learning contexts and motivation to use certain media as well as their general intelligence, which is crucial for information processing. This study examines the relationship between the general fluid intelligence and the media use of 709 first-year business & economics students from 44 universities in Germany for two different learning purposes: informing oneself about B&E topics and preparing for lectures and exams. Accordingly, the motivator information seeking is divided into curiosity driven and goal driven information seeking. Three types of media sources were included: common news sour…
Epistemic cooperation scripts in online learning environments: Fostering learning by reducing uncertainty in discourse?
2005
Using online learning environments in higher education offers innovative possibilities to support collaborative learning. However, online learning creates new kinds of problems for participants who have not previously worked with each other. One of these problems is uncertainty which occurs when participants do not know each other. According to the uncertainty reduction theory, low uncertainty level increases the amount of discourse and decreases the amount of information seeking. Therefore, uncertainty may influence online discourse and learning. This study investigates the effects of an epistemic cooperation script with respect to the amount of discourse, information seeking and learning …
