The article tries to highlight, despite the scarse of available documentation, the Greek and Latin studies (language and texts) in the ancient Apulian University in Altamura (1748-1821). Furthermore, on the basis of unpublished archival materials (school registers and student workbooks) it is possible to shed light on the ancient authors explained at school, the teaching methods, and the study practices.

Primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a quite frequent tumor which results in high mortality and most often exhibits a poor response to present drug therapies. Endoscopic ultrasonography findings in autoimmune pancreatitis

Endoscopic ultrasonography is an established diagnostic tool for pancreatic masses and chronic pancreatitis. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the worldwide medical community in autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), a form of chronic pancreatitis caused by an autoimmune process. This paper reviews the current available literature about the endoscopic ultrasonographic findings of AIP and the role of this imaging technique in the management of this protean disease.

Near-infrared emissive bacteriochlorin-diketopyrrolopyrrole triads: Synthesis and photophysical properties

International audience; The synthesis of unprecedented energy transfer triads containing a near-infrared (NIR) emissive bacteriochlorin subunit and two diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) moieties linked to each other via ethynyl or zero-carbon spacers is presented. Their optical and fluorescence properties were determined in CHCl3 and toluene. These photophysical measurements highlight the ability of DPP scaffold to act as an effective energy donor, which once excited in the range 450-550 nm resulting nearly exclusively NIR emission of hydroporphyrin (ETE > 96%). Magnetic resonance imaging of the cirrhotic liver in the era of gadoxetic acid.

Gadoxetic acid improves detection and characterization of focal liver lesions in cirrhotic patients and can estimate liver function in patients undergoing liver resection. The purpose of this article is to describe the optimal gadoxetic acid study protocol for the liver, the unique characteristics of gadoxetic acid, the differences between gadoxetic acid and extra-cellular gadolium chelates, and the differences in phases of enhancement between cirrhotic and normal liver using gadoxetic acid. We also discuss how to obtain and recognize an adequate hepatobiliary phase.

Head Tracking via Robust Registration in Texture Map Images.

A novel method for 3D head tracking in the presence of large head rotations and facial expression changes is described. Tracking is formulated in terms of color image registration in the texture map of a 3D surface model. Model appearance is recursively updated via image mosaicking in the texture map as the head orientation varies. The resulting dynamic texture map provides a stabilized view of the face that can be used as input to many existing 2D techniques for face recognition, facial expressions analysis, lip reading, and eye tracking. Protein phosphatases and chromatin modifying complexes in the inflammatory cascade in acute pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that may lead to systemic inflammatory response syndrome and death due to multiple organ failure. Acinar cells, together with leukocytes, trigger the inflammatory cascade in response to local damage of the pancreas. Amplification of the inflammatory cascade requires up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and this process is mediated not only by nuclear factor κB but also by chromatin modifying complexes and chromatin remodeling.
