2022

After a re-examination of the 5th century BC housing culture at Himera in comparison with the housing culture of the same period in Athens, four Athenian red-figured and black glazed pottery assemblages are examined by comparing them with similar contexts from housing districts in Himera, in order to reconstruct as far as possible, the dinner services for convivial meals that involved the consumption of wine, both in formal meetings, both in everyday contexts. Finally, the stratigraphic context of five red-figured craters found in Himera is taken into consideration, re-examining the associations with other ceramic finds with the aim of reconstructing their contexts of use and the functions …

Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese

2016

Settore L-ANT/09 - Topografia AnticaSettore L-ANT/07 - Archeologia ClassicaThis work focuses on the problem of cultural contacts between Greek colonists and indigenous communities in the territory of Himera based on the results of the archaeological survey conducted for three decades in the valleys of the northern Imera Torto and S. Leonardo rivers. The elements of material culture that enable us to define the ways of cultural interaction between settlers and indigenous peoples as well as to reconstruct the political socio-economic and sacred landscapes in the various districts investigated are examined. In fact the research allows to outline in addition to the usual settlement and agricultural organizations of chora politiké and éremos chora articulated areas within the territory of Himera and to understand the landmarks of the rural settlement alongside the presence of highland settlements . Therefore the center-periphery approach is abandoned for a more articulated analysis demonstrating different forms of settlement and cultural contact in the three river valleys of the Himera hinterland.

2022

The aim of this paper is to present the palaeo-environmental approaches and preliminary results in the district of Northern Imera river, corresponding to the territory of the ancient cities of Himera (destroyed in 409 BC) and Thermae Himeraeae (founded in 407 BC). The area is located in the North-West of Sicily, and it is mainly characterized by hilly landscape crossed by rivers facing the Thyrrenian Sea, and by a mountainous landscape (the Madonie) on the eastern side. Comparing the results of the archaeological excavations (in the city of Himera, and in the rock-shelter of Vallone Inferno), with topographical and palaeo-environmental analysis (both in the Northern Imera river and in the M…

Thermae Himeraeae. Dall'agora ellenistica al foro romano. Riflessioni sulla romanizzazione della Sicilia.

2012

2018

The aim of this paper is – from a comparative point of viewand to make an analitical and critical review of the archaeological surveys carried out by the University of Palermo in the hinterland of Alesa and Thermae Himeraeae (Northern Sicily) during the Roman period. The research is focused on: identifying the geographical and morphological characters, and the resources of the territory in Antiquity; analysing the distribution of the settlements in the Roman Age, connected to the resources and to the various aspects of the landscape.

Landscape Dynamics and Cultural Contacts in the Territory of Himera in the Archaic Period

2022

In central-northern Sicily, the watershed area between the northern and southern Imera and Platani rivers has already been recognized for years as a pivotal area in relations between the different areas of the island, both in reference to the political and economic projections of the colonial poleis , especially between Himera, Akragas, both in reference to economic relations and cultural contacts with indigenous communities. This area is very crucial context of encounter and confrontation between communities, in which complex systems of territorial articulation can be grasped. The position of the settlements along the basins of the two Himera highlights a close connection in terms of inter…

Comparison of different assembly and annotation tools on analysis of simulated viral metagenomic communities in the gut

2013

Abstract Background The main limitations in the analysis of viral metagenomes are perhaps the high genetic variability and the lack of information in extant databases. To address these issues, several bioinformatic tools have been specifically designed or adapted for metagenomics by improving read assembly and creating more sensitive methods for homology detection. This study compares the performance of different available assemblers and taxonomic annotation software using simulated viral-metagenomic data. Results We simulated two 454 viral metagenomes using genomes from NCBI's RefSeq database based on the list of actual viruses found in previously published metagenomes. Three different ass…

Termini Imerese. Indagini nell'edificio termale

2018

In this paper, we present the results of archaeological samples conducted in 2010 in the seventeenth-century thermal baths at Termini Imerese. The excavations made it possible to find for the first time some parts of the caldarium of the Roman baths. Some sections of the perimeter wall and the paving of the external ambulatory of the building were identified, as well as a small portion of the narrow internal ambulatory, bordered by a pillared portico that overlooked the circular swimming pool, intended for hot baths, located in the centre of the structure. Some remains of the architectural decoration allow to date the building at the beginning of the first century A.D.

The relative role of the T-domain and flanking sequences for developmental control and transcriptional regulation in protein chimeras of Drosophila O…

2004

optomotor-blind (omb) and optomotor-blind related-1 (org-1) encode T-domain DNA binding proteins in Drosophila. Members of this family of transcription factors play widely varying roles during early development and organogenesis in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Functional specificity differs in spite of similar DNA binding preferences of all family members. Using a series of domain swap chimeras, in which different parts of OMB and ORG-1 were mutually exchanged, we investigated the relevance of individual domains in vitro and in vivo. In cell culture transfection assays, ORG-1 was a strong transcriptional activator, whereas OMB appeared neutral. The main transcriptional activation fun…
