Tenascin is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein, relevant for embryonal and fetal development, which is reexpressed in the stroma of benign and malignant tumors. Little is known about the molecular interaction of tenascin during neoplastic transformation and tumor progression in cervical cancer.We studied the expression of tenascin in normal tissue of the cervix uteri, cervical carcinoma in situ, and invasive cervical carcinoma in paraffin sections by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody. Long-term function of porcine islets and single cells embedded in barium-alginate matrix.

The influence of alginate-embedding on the maintenance of functioning and morphological integrity in long-term culture of isolated porcine islets and islet cells was studied. Free-floating islets and islet cells served for control. Function was tested after the 1st, 2nd and 4th week. Basal and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion of embedded islets decreased slightly, but significantly after the first week (from 4.39 +/- 0.64 to 2.87 +/- 0.47 at normal and from 11.96 +/- 1.44 to 4.76 +/- 0.78 microU pro 24 h pro islet at elevated glucose concentration, p < 0.05 and < 0.01, resp.) and remained unchanged thereafter. Expression and regulation of mPer1 in immortalized GnRH neurons.

Hypothalamic GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) neurons play a critical role in the initiation and maintenance of reproduction competence. Using the mouse GnRH neuronal cell line, GT1-7, we have characterized the expression of the gene mPer1, a recognized key element of the mammalian circadian clockwork. Both mPer1 transcripts and the 136 kDa mPER1 gene product could be detected in these cells. Immunocytochemical analysis also confirmed expression of mPER1 both in vitro and in vivo in GnRH neurons. Pro-enkephalin opioid peptides are abundant in porcine and bovine splenic nerves, but absent from nerves of rat, mouse, hamster, and guinea-pig spleen

The opioidergic innervation of the mammalian spleen and possible species differences were investigated. Light-microscopic immunohistochemistry revealed that splenic nerves of bovine and porcine spleen, but not of rat, mouse, hamster and guinea-pig spleen contained proenkephalin-derived opioidergic innervation. Immunoreactivity to both prodynorphin and pro-opiomelanocortin was absent from splenic nerves. Trisomy 12 and translocation (7;9) in an ovarian immature teratoma.

We report a case of an immature malignant ovarian teratoma with peritoneal implants diagnosed in an 18-year-old woman. The tumor was brought into remission after surgery (three laparotomies) and adjuvant chemotherapy. A residual peritoneal implant showed a mature epithelial and glial configuration. Histologically, the neuroectodermal component was dominant in the original tumor as well as in the metastases, being confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. A stem cell line has been obtained with cell culture, having a germ cell character and a yolk sac configuration. AbstractSeveral studies have suggested a possible etiological association between ovarian endometriosis and ovarian cancer. Evidence has shown that KIF20A overexpression might confer a malignant phenotype to ovarian tumors by promoting proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. Background. Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), a nutrient-responsive hormone, exerts various actions in the gastrointestinal tract that are mediated by a G-protein coupled receptor called GLP-2R. A little information is available on GLP-2R expression in enteric neurons and nothing on the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Methods. CD3 immunohistochemistry is helpful in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.

Objective. To evaluate whether CD3 staining performed routinely on temporal artery biopsy specimens might improve the sensitivity of temporal artery biopsy in patients with biopsy-negative GCA. Methods. Two hundred and seventy biopsies were considered for this study, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and with an anti-CD3 antibody. Results. The addition of CD3 staining modified the sensibility and the specificity of the histologic examination in 89.47 and 95.00%, respectively, with a positive and negative predictive values of 97.00 and 79.78%. Despite its paramount role to sustain cell survival, excess of labile iron availability can inflict severe cell damage via reactive oxygen species generation which, in turn, can promote neoplastic transformation.
