The activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and beta-glucuronidase, the concentration of hydroxyproline as well as reticulin and collagen type III, IV and V stainings were followed in skeletal muscle during a 20-day period after a 9-h treadmill running in untrained and trained male mice, aged 4-6 months. The prolonged 9-h running of untrained mice temporarily increased prolyl 4-hydroxylase activity 2, 5 and 10 days after exercise, more prominently in the red than in the white part of quadriceps femoris-muscle, and in analogical manner as beta-glucuronidase activity in tibialis anterior-muscle. Region specific expression of furin mRNA in the rat brain.

The distribution of furin mRNA was examined in the rat central nervous system. Northern blot analysis reveals the presence of a 4.4 kb band in all brain tissues examined. In situ hybridization analysis of frozen rat brain sections using a radioactively labeled antisense cRNA probe to rat furin demonstrated moderate to low levels of expression in both neuronal and non-neuronal tissue in all areas examined. The mild juvenile form of type IV glycogenosis, confirmed by a profound deficiency of the brancher enzyme in tissue specimens is reported from three Turkish male siblings who, foremost, suffered from chronic progressive myopathy. Muscle fibers contained polyglucosan inclusions of typical fine structure, i.e. a mixture of granular and filamentous glycogen. They reacted strongly for myophosphorylase, but were resistant to diastase. The influence of low frequency (8-10 Hz) electrical stimulation on denervated fast-twitch muscle from rabbit was investigated. Prolonged direct stimulation of denervated muscle resulted in higher oxidative enzyme activities. Furthermore, single fibre analyses for succinate dehydrogenase showed a more uniform distribution of activity in stimulated-denervated muscle when compared to normal muscle. As was also the case following stimulation of innervated muscle, glycolytic enzymes were decreased in activity and the LDH-isozyme pattern was also shifted towards heart type. No change of the myosin light chain pattern could be observed after 56 days of stimulation.

P-450 isoenzymes (PB1, PB2, MC1, and MC2) NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase, the glutathione transferases (GSTs) B and C and microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEHb) have been studied during nitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinogenesis using immunohistochemical techniques. Dihydro-orotate dehydrogenase activity was demonstrated in the hyphae of the fungusNeurospora crassa by a cytochemical technique. The activity was slightly stronger in the hyphal tips thus demonstrating the more intense metabolic activity in these parts of the mycelium. Several control reactions showed that the staining reaction was specific.

Fibro-osteo-cemental lesions of the jaw bones are a heterogeneous group of diseases which present problems in classification. Psammous desmo-osteoblastoma is one of four newly proposed entities (Makek 1983) and has until now been characterized by its light microscopic, clinical and radiological features. On electron microscopy this tumour exhibits fibroblastic (preosteoblastic), osteoblastic and osteocytic cells and a globular mineralization unlike the mineralization of the psammoma bodies.
