Arsenic Pollution in the Southwest of Tuscany: Monitoring of Cornia Catchment Basin

The territory of Colline Metallifere, in SW Tuscany, is characterized by the presence of strong arsenic anomalies. Some hypotheses, formulated in the last 20 years, based on geological and mineralogical factors have failed to explain the peculiar distribution of this toxic element in soil, fluvial sediments and ground water. Throughout the present research I intend to demonstrate the powerful link between the vocal practice in accompanied monody and the way Early Italian violin music ought to be interpreted. Due to the scarce amount of articulation and ornamentation in this music, I consider that historical criteria should be found in order to back up the subjective choices in its performance. According to this, I focus on reviewing sources that describe the vocal practice around 1600, but also contemporary sources in which we can find instructions addressed to bow instruments. Reducing the Human Effort in Text Line Segmentation for Historical Documents

Labeling the layout in historical documents for preparing training data for machine learning techniques is an arduous task that requires great human effort. A draft of the layout can be obtained by using a document layout analysis (DLA) system that later can be corrected by the user with less effort than doing it from scratch. We research in this paper an iterative process in which the user only supervises and corrects the given draft for the pages automatically selected by the DLA system with the aim of reducing the required human effort. Summary Background The involvement of Jewish doctors and scientists in the development of health resorts in eastern Galicia (part of the Austrian monarchy after 1772, and since 1918 as part of independent Poland, now part of Ukraine) is unquestionable; however, awareness of this fact is not that common. Meanwhile, also due to their work and activity, small borderland resorts became important medical, cultural and social centers of the region. The involvement of Jewish doctors in the development of Galician health resorts resulted from, among others, the rich and multi-layered tradition and integration of Judaism with the hygiene regulations and moral principles of the religion. There is one overriding objective in the literary oeuvre by U. Karatkevitch, namely that the writer tried to enliven and strengthen the weakened sense of national identity among the Belarusians. In the 1950s and the 1960s, it was far from easy in the USSR to encourage and propagate genuine and true Belarusian history, the beauty of the Belarusian language and Belarusian national identity. For his activities in this field, Karatkevitch was often stigmatized and punished. The article presents the hardships of the Belarusian writer, his struggles against censorship as well as unfavourable literary critics.
