Bracovirus derived genes in the genome of Spodoptera exigua Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and their role in host susceptibility to pathogens
2015
A histological study of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian from southern GEmany, using thin sections and micro-CT scan…
2013
AbstractThe histology of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian, is described on the basis of two supplementary methods: classic thin sectioning and micro-CT scanning. In addition, the effectiveness of high-resolution micro-CT scanning for histological analysis is assessed. A classic, mid-shaft thin section of the femur was prepared, but prior to slicing two micro-CT scans were made. One of these has an image stack of a total of 1,024 images in the horizontal plane and a slice thickness of 87.8 μm, so that the entire bone could be captured, while the second was at mid-shaft region only, yet with a higher resolution of 28.3 μm and an image stack of 787 images in th…
Influence of afforestation on soil genesis, morphology and properties in glacial till deposits
2013
A study of soil morphological, physical and chemical properties was performed in woodland of different ages, in which spruce (Picea abies), aspen (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula pendula) growing stocks have colonized former agricultural land. The aim of the study was to clarify changes in soil genesis, morphology and properties due to the afforestation of abandoned agricultural land in glacial till deposits. The research showed that soil in these deposits (loamy sand, loam, clay) retains the morphological properties of agricultural land for up to 100 years. Secondary podzolization features in the soil profiles were observed within 100 years of the start of afforestation, whereas the dia…
Site quality evaluation by classification tree: an application to cork quality in Sardinia
2005
Cork harvesting and stopper production represent a major forest industry in Sardinia (Italy). The target of the present investigation was to evaluate the ‘‘classification tree’’ as a tool to discover possible relationships between microsite characteristics and cork quality. Seven main cork oak (Quercus suber) producing areas have been identified in Sardinia, for a total of more than 122,000 ha. Sixty-three sample trees, distributed among different geographical locations and microsite conditions, were selected. A soil profile near each sample tree was described, soil samples were collected and analysed. After debarking, cork quality of each sample tree was graded by an independent panel of e…
Real-time RT-PCR detection of betanodavirus in naturally and experimentally infected fish from Spain
2011
Infections with betanodavirus affect a wide range of wild and farmed fish species throughout the world, mostly from the marine environment. The aim of this work was to develop and validate real-time RT-PCR assays for sensitive and specific detection of nodavirus in diseased or carrier fish. The new detection assay was used to study the transmission and development of nodavirus infection in juvenile sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), challenged by different routes, and also to screen for nodavirus in various farmed fish species. On average, the sensitivity was 10-100 times higher than a standard RT-PCR, and the assay was able to detect asymptomatic carrier fish that otherwise could have be…

Visually induced motion sickness is an unpleasant but common side-effect of many simulations and VR-applications. We investigated whether an earth-fixed reference frame provided in the simulation is able to reduce motion sickness. To do so, we created a moving starfield that did not contain any indicators of the spatial orientation of the observer. The observer wore a head-mounted display (HTC Vive) and was simulated to move through the randomly oscillating starfield, a time-to-contact task had to be carried out. Two colored stars on collision course with each other had to be spotted, then they disappeared and the time of their collision had to be judged. Eye-movements, task performance, an…
Financial crisis impact on sustainability reporting
2013
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the effect of the current financial crisis on corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting and CSR assurance strategies that companies disclose online to stakeholders, by dividing the time horizon into two periods, before 2008 and from 2008. Design/methodology/approach – The sample includes Spanish listed companies, differentiating CSR reporters from non CSR-reporters. Also distinguished in the CSR-reporters sample, are those companies that assure the CSR report from those that do not. The authors contrast whether there is a trend as regards CSR reporting and CSR assurance, depending on whether the crisis has already begun or …
The Grid: As a Starting Point and an End Point of Ornament
2017
Ornament was one of the key concepts in the nineteenth century discussions on architecture and decorative arts. In the beginning of the twentieth century, modernism abandoned ornament from its vocabulary. In the last decades of the twentieth century, the heritage of Modernism and its rejection of ornament were critically analyzed and ornament became a topical subject once more. Geometry played an important role in the search for rational and intellectual basis for the architecture and decorative arts in the beginning of industrial age. Arabic ornamental practice with its geometrical foundation served as one precept in searching and formulating appropriate design principles for architecture …
UV Index on Tilted Surfaces
2007
Solar ultraviolet erythemal irradiance (UVER) has been studied on inclined planes with different orientations in Valencia, Spain. To do this a platform was designed that could turn through 90 degrees on its own axis. The radiometers were inclined at an angle close to the latitude of Valencia (39.5 degrees N). Using two timers the platform could be turned through 90 degrees every 5 min. On clear or partially cloudy days, including those with different turbidity values, it was observed that the UVER showed a maximum at 1200 h GMT, very close to solar noon, in the north and south positions, while the maximum for east and west orientations was found at approximately one hour before and one hour…
