The concept of major depression. III. Concurrent validity of six competing operational definitions for the clinical ICD-9 diagnosis.

1991

The comparative validity of six operational diagnoses of major depression was evaluated in 600 psychiatric inpatients using the independently assessed clinical ICD-9 diagnoses as a yardstick. Agreement with, and positive predictive value for the ICD-9 categories of pure (endogenous and psychogenic) depression served as validation criteria; sensitivity of major depression diagnoses for detecting ICD-9 bipolar depressions was additionally used for examining the adequacy of width, time and exclusion criteria of the competing operational definitions. Three essential results were found. First, the "old" diagnostic definitions of RDC and FDC are superior to all newer definitions because they defi…

Incidence and Clinical Impact of Right Ventricular Involvement (Biventricular Ballooning) in Takotsubo Syndrome: Results From the GEIST Registry

2021

Background: The short- and long-term prognosis of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) presenting with right ventricular (RV) involvement remains poorly understood. Research Question: What is the incidence and clinical outcome of RV involvement in TTS? Study Design and Methods: This study analyzed 839 consecutive patients with TTS (758 female subjects and 81 male subjects) in a multicenter registry. RV involvement was defined as wall motion abnormality of the RV free wall, with or without apical involvement. The median long-term follow-up was 2.1 years (interquartile range, 0.3-4.5 years). The primary outcome was in-hospital and out-of-hospital all-cause mortality. The secondary end point was a composi…

Drug-drug interactions in a cohort of hospitalized elderly patients.

2013

PurposeThe aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of patients exposed to potentially severe drug-drug interactions (DDIs) at hospital admission and discharge and the related risk of in-hospital mortality and adverse clinical events, readmission, and all-cause mortality at 3months. MethodsThis cross-sectional, prospective study was held in 70 Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards. Potentially severe DDIs at hospital admission and discharge; risk of in-hospital mortality and of adverse clinical events, readmission, and all-cause mortality at 3-month follow-up. ResultsAmong 2712 patients aged 65years or older recruited at hospital admission, 1642 (60.5\%) were exposed to at leas…

Roxindole, a dopamine autoreceptor agonist, in the treatment of positive and negative schizophrenic symptoms

1994

Twenty schizophrenic inpatients with either predominantly positive or predominantly negative symptoms were treated with the dopamine autoreceptor agonist roxindole in prospective open clinical trials. There was no antipsychotic effect in the subgroup with positive symptoms, whereas the subgroup with negative symptoms, especially those with the residual type of schizophrenia, showed a moderate but significant 20% reduction in total scores on the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms.

Straining at work and its relationship with personality profiles and individual consequences in healthcare workers (HCWs)

2020

Straining is an attenuated form of mobbing, in which the continuity of vexatious actions is not driven by a discriminatory intent. With the objective of testing the possible moderating role of personality in the relationship between perceptions about straining at work and individual consequences, a correlational design research involved 374 healthcare workers (HCWs) from two Italian hospitals. The following questionnaires were administered: (1) Short Negative Acts Questionnaire (S-NAQ), to assess discriminative actions at work)

Can technical, functional and structural characteristics of dental units predict Legionella pneumophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination?

2011

Legionella pneumophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are common colonizers of water environments, particularly dental unit waterlines. The aim of this study was to assess whether the technical, functional and structural characteristics of dental units can influence the presence and the levels of opportunistic pathogens. Overall, 42 water samples were collected from dental units in a teaching hospital in Palermo, Italy, including 21 samples from the 21 taps supplied by the municipal water distribution system and 21 samples from oral rinsing cups at 21 dental units. L. pneumophila was present in 16 out of 21 water samples (76.2%) from dental units, and the median concentration was higher in samp…

[Legionella spp. contamination in indoor air: preliminary results of an Italian multicenter study].

2014

Obiettivo.

Nephrotoxicity in the setting of invasive fungal diseases

2008

Amphotericin B, a broad spectrum antifungal agent, is widely used despite significant adverse events including nephrotoxicity. Nephrotoxicity occurs frequently in patients receiving amphotericin B. Different definitions for nephrotoxicity are reviewed in the context of outcome in patients with invasive fungal diseases. In most publications, mortality was higher in patients experiencing nephrotoxicity and mean hospital length of stay was prolonged. As a consequence, the use of less nephrotoxic antifungal agents could improve treatment outcomes.
