Houses that Look to the Mediterranean to Learn How to Inhabit and Teach to Design / Casas que miran el Meditérraneo para aprender a habitar y enseñar…

2018

The Mediterranean sea is observed by countless eyes that reveal its beauty and give it back in form of architecture. These eyes are houses, some of them were arisen almost spontaneously, …

A Multistep Methodology for the Evaluation of Human Resources Using the Evidence Theory

2013

The paper aims at proposing a model for the human resources evaluation as regards to a set of skills. Specifically, it starts sfrom the judgments expressed by a team of experts on the basis of their previous working experiences with the resource to be evaluated. Information arising from experts is successively handled by the analyst and aggregated to determine the resource suitability or unsuitability. The Dempster–Shafer theory is proposed here as an appropriate tool to deal with both the uncertainty of experts due to the incomplete knowledge about resources to be evaluated and that of the analyst to convert expert judgments in terms of resource suitability/unsuitability. Furthermore, the …

Selection of suitable housekeeping genes for expression analysis in glioblastoma using quantitative RT-PCR

2009

Abstract Background Considering the broad variation in the expression of housekeeping genes among tissues and experimental situations, studies using quantitative RT-PCR require strict definition of adequate endogenous controls. For glioblastoma, the most common type of tumor in the central nervous system, there was no previous report regarding this issue. Results Here we show that amongst seven frequently used housekeeping genes TBP and HPRT1 are adequate references for glioblastoma gene expression analysis. Evaluation of the expression levels of 12 target genes utilizing different endogenous controls revealed that the normalization method applied might introduce errors in the estimation of…

Benchmarking open data efforts through indices and rankings: Assessing development and contexts of use

2022

Abstract This paper aims to provide a broad perspective on the development of benchmarking open data efforts through indices and rankings over the years, both at the level of countries and allowing for a cross-country comparison. The methodology follows a systematic search for the relevant resources, their classification and identification of six open data benchmarks to be further analyzed, the identification of their key components through decomposition, their description, and identifying the similarities and differences. Three major groups of indices and four periods that characterize the efforts to benchmark and measure the development of open data are identified, where the first measure…

Predicting in situ soil N2O emission using NOE algorithm and soil database

2005

This paper presents a new algorithm, Nitrous Oxide Emission (NOE) for simulating the emission of the greenhouse gas N2O from agricultural soils. N2O fluxes are calculated as the result of production through denitrification and nitrification and reduction through the last step of denitrification. Actual denitrification and nitrification rates are calculated from biological parameters and soil water-filled pore space, temperature and mineral nitrogen contents. New suggestions in NOE consisted in introducing (1) biological site-specific parameters of soil N2O reduction and (2) reduction of the N2O produced through nitrification to N2 through denitrification. This paper includes a database of 6…

EX-ANTE AND EX-POST MEASUREMENT OF EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY IN HEALTH: A NORMATIVE DECOMPOSITION

2013

This paper proposes and discusses two different approaches to the definition of inequality in health: the ex-ante and the ex-post approach. It proposes strategies for measuring inequality of opportunity in health based on the path-independent Atkinson equality index. The proposed methodology is illustrated using data from the British Household Panel Survey; the results suggest that in the period 2000–2005, at least one-third of the observed health equalities in the UK were equalities of opportunity. Evaluating the Eco-Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants: Comparison of Optimistic and Pessimistic Approaches

2020

The assessment of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) performance has gained the interest of water utilities and water regulators. Eco-efficiency has been identified as a powerful indicator, as it integrates economic and environmental variables into a single index. Most previous studies have employed traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the evaluation of WWTP eco-efficiency. However, DEA allows the selection of input and output weights for individual WWTPs for the calculation of eco-efficiency scores. To overcome this limitation, we employed the double-frontier and common set of weights methods to evaluate the eco-efficiency of a sample of 30 WWTPs in Spain. The WWTPs were ranked b…

Productivity growth of wastewater treatment plants – accounting for environmental impacts: a Malmquist-Luenberger index approach

2015

As the number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has increased, the economic considerations associated with their management have become more relevant. Measuring the productivity of WWTPs allows the best practice to be identified and resource use to be optimized. Previous studies assessing the productivity change of WWTPs have ignored undesirable outputs; thus, wastewater treatment was considered to be free of environmental impacts. To overcome this limitation and for the first time, we assessed the productivity growth of a sample of Spanish WWTPs, while also accounting for the emission of greenhouse gases and sludge production. The Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index (MLPI) and its…

Influence of greenhouse different coverings on chemical and physical risk factors

2005

Crop production in greenhouses needs the use of chemicals and requires high levels of temperature and relative humidity to assure the increasing of crop production. This can cause risks for the health of the operators, especially if they are not equipped with protection devices. The risks may also vary with the type and/or size and/or shape of the protected structures. In order to determine the influence of different coverings on type and amount of risks, chemical and physical risk factors were measured inside greenhouses with different cladding materials (glass panels and plastic films) after crop management. In these two different greenhouses typologies, that were similar for location and…

Monetary policy and the redistribution of net worth in the U.S

2021

The view that expansionary monetary policy can exacerbate both income and wealth inequality by increasing asset prices has become increasingly popular. The aim of this paper is to study the distributive effects of monetary policy on wealth inequality. In the first part of this research, we develop a simple framework based on accounting identity to examine the redistributive repercussions of changes in monetary policy on net worth through different channels. Based on this framework, in the second part of the paper, we show empirical evidence concerning the effects of monetary policy on wealth inequality in the US. To derive this, we combined macro and micro data, and proceeded in two steps. …
