Satellite Observations of the Contrasting Response of Trees and Grasses to Variations in Water Availability

Interannual variations in ecosystem primary productivity are dominated by water availability. Until recently, characterizing the photosynthetic response of different ecosystems to soil moisture anomalies was hampered by observational limitations. Here, we use a number of satellite-based proxies for productivity, including spectral indices, sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, and data-driven estimates of gross primary production, to reevaluate the relationship between terrestrial photosynthesis and water. Männliche Keimzellen aus embryonalen Stammzellen

Zusammenfassung Die Grundlage für die lebenslange Differenzierung männlicher Keimzellen sind die spermatogonialen Stammzellen (SSC) im Testis (etwa 0,03% aller Testiszellen). Es ist gelungen, aus embryonalen Stammzellen (ES-Zellen) der Maus SSC zu generieren, die die Meiose und die Haploidisierung durchlaufen. Werden die entstehenden Spermien mit Hilfe von ICSI in unbefruchtete Eizellen eingebracht und die entstandenen 2-Zeller in den Uterus pseudoschwangerer Mäuse transferiert, werden lebensfähige Mäuse geboren. Die von uns entwickelte Strategie ermöglicht molekulare und biochemische Untersuchungen zur männlichen Keimzelldifferenzierung, insbesondere auch zur Meiose und zur Haploidisierung.

Response of total and nitrate-dissimilating bacteria to reduced N deposition in a spruce forest soil profile

A field-scale manipulation experiment conducted for 16 years in a Norway spruce forest at Solling, Central Germany, was used to follow the long-term response of total soil bacteria, nitrate reducers and denitrifiers under conditions of reduced N deposition. N was experimentally removed from throughfall by a roof construction (‘clean rain plot’). Frequent freeze-thaw cycles yield diminished yet resistant and responsive microbial communities in two temperate soils: a laboratory experiment

Few studies have been conducted on adaptations of microbial communities to low and fluctuating temperatures using environmentally relevant conditions. In this study, six Himalayan and two temperate soils were selected as candidates for low-temperature/freeze-thaw (FT)-adapted and susceptible soils, respectively. Redundancy analysis with forward selection was used to create a model of environmental parameters explaining variability in the initial microbial abundance and 4 °C activities.
