Purpose To measure the endotoxin concentration (EC) of 25 commercially available, hyaluronic acid- and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose-based (HPMC) ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs). A disseminated model of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with prevalent liver metastasis was generated by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of EBV(+) B lymphoblastoid SKW6.4 in nude-SCID mice. The survival of SKW6.4 xenografts (median survival = 27 days) was significantly improved when hyaluronan scaffolds embedded with mesenchimal stem cells (MSC) were implanted in the abdominal area 4 days after SKW6.4 injection (median survival = 39.5 days). Mice implanted with MSC showed a significant improvement of hepatic functionality in lymphoma xenografts, as demonstrated by measurement of serum ALT/AST levels. A new disulfide crosslinking method was developed for the preparation of blended hyaluronan (HA)-gelatin hydrogels to form a synthetic, covalently linked mimic of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The HA and gelatin were chemically modified using 3,3′-dithiobis(propionic hydrazide) (DTP). Abstract A hyaluronic acid derivative bearing pendant l -benzoyl-cysteine portions (with a derivatization degree equal to 10 mol.%) was synthesized by linking N,N′-dibenzoyl- l -cystine to the polysaccharide and then reducing its disulfide bridge to thiol groups. The formation of π–π stacking interactions between the benzoyl moieties was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy as a function of polymer concentration and oxidation time. This work aimed at finding an innovative vesicle-type formulation able to improve the bioavailability of curcumin upon oral administration.
