Spatial pattern analysis using hybrid models: an application to the Hellenic seismicity
2016
Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters and the spatial distribution of their epi- centres generally shows diverse interaction structures at different spatial scales. In this paper, we use a multi-scale point pattern model to describe the main seismicity in the Hellenic area over the last 10 years. We analyze the interaction between events and the relationship with geo- logical information of the study area, using hybrid models as proposed by Baddeley et al. ( 2013 ). In our analysis, we find two competing suitable hybrid models, one with a full parametric structure and the other one based on nonpara- metric kernel estimators for the spatial inhomogeneity.
Colloidal Nanoplatelet/Conducting Polymer Hybrids: Excitonic And Material Properties
2016
WOS:000370678700053 Here we present the first account of conductive polymer/colloidal nanoplatelet hybrids. For this, we developed DEH-PPV-based polymers with two different anchor groups (sulfide and amine) acting as surfactants for CdSe nanoplatelets, which are atomically flat semiconductor nanocrystals. Hybridization of the polymers with the nanoplatelets in the solution phase was observed to cause strong photoluminescence quenching in both materials. Through steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectrum measurements, photoluminescence quenching was shown to result from dominant exciton dissociation through charge transfer at the polymer/nanoplatelet interfaces that possess a sta…
Genomic instability in an interspecific hybrid of the genus Saccharomyces: a matter of adaptability
2020
Ancient events of polyploidy have been linked to huge evolutionary leaps in the tree of life, while increasing evidence shows that newly established polyploids have adaptive advantages in certain stress conditions compared to their relatives with a lower ploidy. The genus Saccharomyces is a good model for studying such events, as it contains an ancient whole-genome duplication event and many sequenced Saccharomyces cerevisiae are, evolutionary speaking, newly formed polyploids. Many polyploids have unstable genomes and go through large genome erosions; however, it is still unknown what mechanisms govern this reduction. Here, we sequenced and studied the natural S. cerevisiae × Saccharomyces…
Genome structure reveals the diversity of mating mechanisms in Saccharomyces cerevisiae x Saccharomyces kudriavzevii hybrids, and the genomic instabi…
2020
Interspecific hybridization has played an important role in the evolution of eukaryotic organisms by favouring genetic interchange between divergent lineages to generate new phenotypic diversity involved in the adaptation to new environments. This way, hybridization between Saccharomyces species, involving the fusion between their metabolic capabilities, is a recurrent adaptive strategy in industrial environments. In the present study, whole-genome sequences of natural hybrids between Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces kudriavzevii were obtained to unveil the mechanisms involved in the origin and evolution of hybrids, as well as the ecological and geographic contexts in which sponta…

Mechanical characterization of bio-based composite/metal laminates for an application in street furniture
2019
In this work, it is proposed to study the influence of three manufacturing parameters in the development of bio-basedcomposite/steel hybrids. These parameters arethe methodof assembly between composite and metal, the distribution of composite and steellayers throughthe thicknessof the hybrid, and the stacking sequence of the composite part of the hybrid. The study was conducted through impact tests at different energies and quasi-static three-point bending tests. For each of these parameters, the influenceon the mechanical properties of the hybrid is evaluated. The results show that these properties depend essentially on the relative distribution of steel and composite through the thickness.
Data on hybrids of genus Ophrys L. from Alicante province (E of Spain) are reported. A new nothospecies, O. × fraresiana (O. lupercalis × O. lutea), is described from Sierra de Serrella. In addition, …
Novelties and considerations on Centaurea L. concerning the Valencian flora (eastern Spain): Data are reported on the Valencian-Tarraconensian (E of Spain) species o…
Hybridization in Capparis spinosa L.: Molecular and morphological evidence from a Mediterranean island complex
2014
Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular markers and morphological analysis were used in order to characterize wild populations and cultivated forms of orphan crop species Capparis spinosa L. in a Mediterranean island complex. Nineteen wild populations belonging to two different subspecies, C. spinosa subsp. spinosa and subsp. rupestris, were sampled in different environments in Sicily and the surrounding islets Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Salina. Different biotypes cultivated in Pantelleria and Salina were analyzed. Six ISSR primers were selected for genetic characterization, and all clear and reproducible bands were scored and analyzed. Among the 47 ISSR bands obtained, 97.5% were pol…
The European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) as reservoir hosts of Troglostrongylus brevior (Strongylida: Crenosomatidae) lungworms.
2014
The increasing reports of Troglostrongylus brevior lungworm in domestic cats from Italy and Spain raised questions on its factual distribution and on the role wildcats play as reservoirs of these parasites. Carcasses of 21 wildcats were collected in natural parks of southern Italy (i.e., Catania, Sicily n = 5 and Matera, Basilicata n = 16) and biometrically and genetically identified as Felis silvestris silvestris, but two as hybrids. Troglostrongylus brevior and Eucoleus aerophilus lungworms were found in 15 (71.4%) and 7 (33.3%) individuals, respectively, being five (23.8%) co-infected by the two species. Both lungworms showed an aggregated distribution in the host population, assessed by…
