Biogas production and saccharification of Salix pretreated at different steam explosion conditions.

Abstract Different steam explosion conditions were applied to Salix chips and the effect of this pretreatment was evaluated by running both enzymatic hydrolysis and biogas tests. Total enzymatic release of glucose and xylose increased with pretreatment harshness, with maximum values being obtained after pretreatment for 10 min at 210 °C. Harsher pretreatment conditions did not increase glucose release, led to degradation of xylose and to formation of furfurals. Samples pretreated at 220 and 230 °C initially showed low production of biogas, probably because of inhibitors produced during the pretreatment, but the microbial community was able to adapt and showed high final biogas production. Various chemometric techniques were used to establish the relationship between the autohydrolysis conditions prior to pulping and the chemical compositions of the soluble organic materials removed from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) wood chips. Sulfur-free pulping of hot-water-extracted spruce sawdust

Softwood (Picea abies) sawdust was hot-water-extracted with two multi-phase processes (160-180°C, 100-280 min, and liquor-to-wood ratio 5 l/kg) corresponding to P-factors of ~780 (yield 80.0%) and ~4580 (yield 72.4%). The pre-treated materials were then pulped with the soda-AQ cooking (170°C, NaOH charge 20%, AQ charge 0.1%, 30-150 min, and liquor-to-wood ratio 5 l/kg), resulting in a yield range of 36.1-61.4% (for reference cooks without pre-extraction 47.9-60.0%). Dynamics of Microbial Populations during Fermentation of Wines from the Utiel-Requena Region of Spain

The dynamics of fungi, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria during fermentation of four musts were studied. Fungi disappeared quickly in the fermenting must. The lactic acid bacteria population diminished during alcoholic fermentation, then they increased and performed malolactic fermentation. Yeasts grew quickly, reaching maximum populations at different times depending on the vinification treatment.

Structure-activity relationships of polymethoxyflavones and other flavonoids as inhibitors of non-enzymic lipid peroxidation

Polymethoxylated flavones and C-glycosyl derivatives isolated from medicinal plants besides other flavonoid compounds were studied for their influence on lipid peroxidation induced by FeSO4+ cysteine in rat liver microsomes. Synthesis of Fluorinated Glycosyl Amino Acid Building Blocks for MUC1 Cancer Vaccine Candidates by Microreactor-Assisted Glycosylation

Abstract MUC1-type glycopeptides have already shown their potential as possible cancer vaccine candidates. In addition, first examples of fluorinated antigen structures, especially containing the Thomsen–Friedenreich antigen, with similar antibody recognition have been reported. Using microreactor techniques for improvement of the crucial step, the complex glycosylation reactions, is an efficient way to find optimized reaction parameter as well as to circumvent well-known scale-up drawbacks. Besides, this is the first report of continuous flow glycosylations of glycosyl amino acids, in particular with fluorinated glycosyl building blocks.

In Candida parapsilosis the ATC1 Gene Encodes for an Acid Trehalase Involved in Trehalose Hydrolysis, Stress Resistance and Virulence

An ORF named CPAR2-208980 on contig 005809 was identified by screening a Candida parapsilosis genome data base. Its 67% identity with the acid trehalase sequence from C. albicans (ATC1) led us to designate it CpATC1. Homozygous mutants that lack acid trehalase activity were constructed by gene disruption at the two CpATC1 chromosomal alleles. Phenotypic characterization showed that atc1Δ null cells were unable to grow on exogenous trehalose as carbon source, and also displayed higher resistance to environmental challenges, such as saline exposure (1.2 M NaCl), heat shock (42°C) and both mild and severe oxidative stress (5 and 50 mM H2O2). A transmembrane protein CD133 has been implicated as a marker of stem-like glioma cells and predictor for therapeutic response in malignant brain tumours. CD133 expression is commonly evaluated by using antibodies specific for the AC133 epitope located in one of the extracellular domains of membrane-bound CD133. There is conflicting evidence regarding the significance of the AC133 epitope as a marker for identifying stem-like glioma cells and predicting the degree of malignancy in glioma cells. Effect of α-factor on individual wall mannoproteins fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae acells

Treatment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae a cells with α-factor partially inhibits mannosylation of the high Mr mannoproteins, although there is an increase in the total amount of these molecules present in the wall. They show a similar mobility in SDS-acrylamide gels to those from untreated mnn2 cells. No other significant effects on wall mannoproteins have been observed, except a decrease in the amount of the 29 kDa species.

Posttranslational N-glycosylation of the hepatitis B virus large envelope protein

Here, we report on an exception to this rule occurring on the hepatitis B virus (HBV) large L envelope protein that is a subject to co-plus posttranslational N-glycosylation.
