An unexpected ring carboxylation in the electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones

The electrocarboxylation of various aromatic ketones, carried out in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in a diaphragmless cell equipped with a carbon cathode and an aluminium sacrificial anode, yielded, among the products, the target hydroxy acids, the corresponding alcohols and pinacols and, quite surprisingly, detectable amounts of substituted benzoic acids and cycloexene carboxylic acids. These compounds arise from a never reported before electrocarboxylation on the aromatic ring, respectively, for substitution of an aromatic hydrogen and from an addition reaction. A DFT study on the NHC catalysed Michael addition of enols to α,β-unsaturated acyl-azoliums. A base catalysed C–C bond-formation step

The NHC catalysed nucleophilic additions of enols to α,β-unsaturated acyl-azolium intermediates have been investigated using DFT methods at the MPWB1K/6-31G** computational level. In the direct and the conjugate additions, formation of a hydrogen bond (HB) with the carboxyl oxygen is not sufficient to favour the C-C bond formation as a consequence of the low nucleophilic character of enols. Interestingly, when enols form a HB with the chloride counterion, the activation energies associated with the conjugate addition decrease as a consequence of the increased nucleophilic character of enols and the increased electrophilic character of the 'acyl-azolium + Cl' ion pair. Bifunctional Acid-Base Catalysis

Acid-base catalysis with bifunctional catalysts is a very prominent catalytic strategy in both small-molecule organocatalysts as well as enzyme catalysis. In both worlds, small-molecule catalysts and enzymatic catalysis, a variety of different general acids or hydrogen bond donors are used. In this chapter, important parallels between small molecule catalysts and enzymes are discussed, and a comparison is also made to the emerging field of frustrated Lewis pair catalysis.

In the title compound, C25H36O6, the two central cyclohexane rings exhibit a chair conformation. The terminal cyclohexene and cyclopentane rings are in half-chair and envelope conformations (with the C atom bearing the methyl substituent as the flap), respectively. The methyl group of the butyrate chain is disordered over two orientations, with a refined occupancy ratio of 0.742 (6):0.258 (6). Intramolecular O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds are observed. In the crystal, molecules are linked by O—H...O hydrogen bonds into chains running parallel to theaaxis.

Tritium accumulation in fusion reactor materials is considered a serious radiological issue, therefore a lot of effort has been concentrated on the development of radiometric techniques. A novel method, based on gradual dissolution, for the determination of the total tritium content and its depth profiles in metallic samples is demonstrated. The current research focuses on peroxide ion incorporation in the structure of strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) by exposure to H2O2 ina closed hydrothermal vessel under mild conditions at 130 to 170 °C. Peroxide enriched strontium apatite (SrPerAp) was characterized for structure by X-Ray diffraction, for peroxide content- by permanganometric titration and then viewed by SEM.
