Invasive candida infections in neonates after major surgery: Current evidence and new directions

Infections represent a serious health problem in neonates. Invasive Candida infections (ICIs) are still a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Infants hospitalized in NICUs are at high risk of ICIs, because of several risk factors: broad spectrum antibiotic treatments, central catheters and other invasive devices, fungal colonization, and impaired immune responses. A Janus-Faced IM30 Ring Involved in Thylakoid Membrane Fusion Is Assembled from IM30 Tetramers.

Summary Biogenesis and dynamics of thylakoid membranes likely involves membrane fusion events. Membrane attachment of the inner membrane-associated protein of 30 kDa (IM30) affects the structure of the lipid bilayer, finally resulting in membrane fusion. Yet, how IM30 triggers membrane fusion is largely unclear. IM30 monomers pre-assemble into stable tetrameric building blocks, which further align to form oligomeric ring structures, and differently sized IM30 rings bind to membranes. DeepWAS: Multivariate genotype-phenotype associations by directly integrating regulatory information using deep learning

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identify genetic variants associated with traits or diseases. GWAS never directly link variants to regulatory mechanisms. Instead, the functional annotation of variants is typically inferred by post hoc analyses. A specific class of deep learning-based methods allows for the prediction of regulatory effects per variant on several cell type-specific chromatin features. We here describe “DeepWAS”, a new approach that integrates these regulatory effect predictions of single variants into a multivariate GWAS setting. Prognostic value of methylator phenotype in stage III colon cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapy

Abstract Purpose: There are conflicting results concerning the prognostic value of the CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) in patients with nonmetastatic colon cancer. We studied this phenotype in stage III colon cancer characterized for mismatch repair (MMR), RAS, and BRAF status, and treated with adjuvant FOLFOX-based regimen. Experimental Design: Tumor samples of 1,907 patients enrolled in the PETACC-8 adjuvant phase III trial were analyzed.
