Evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark in ATLAS at √s = 7 TeV

2012

This Letter presents evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark using 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV accumulated with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on the selection of the dileptonic final states with events featuring two isolated leptons, electron or muon, with significant transverse missing momentum and at least one jet. An approach based on boosted decision trees has been developed to improve the discrimination of single top-quark Wt events from background. A template fit to the final classifier distributions is performed to determine the cross-section. The result is incompatible with the background-only hypothes…

Comparative Analysis of Tagging and Feature-Tracking Cardiac MRI Techniques for the Evaluation of Cardiac Deformation

2020

[EN] Currently, there is a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, being the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Thus, a rapid and effective evaluation of the heart is increasingly relevant to diagnose the patient early and achieve appropriate treatment. For this reason, this study aims to compare myocardial deformation parameters such as circumferential strain (segmental, base, mid, apical and global) and global torsion values by the CMR tissue tagging reference technique in SPAMM cine images and the promising feature-tracking technique in b-SSFP cine images, in 31 healthy subjects and 35 patients diagnosed with infarct. The results obtained showed that there is a high agreement in t…

Description and Life History of an Unusual Fern-Feeding Tortricid Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from Brazil

2004

Tortrimosaica polypodivora Brown & Baixeras, new genus and new species, is described and illustrated from Sao Paulo, Brazil. We also describe and illustrate the last instar and pupa and provide notes on the life history. Larvae of the new species are gall inducers on the stems of Microgramma squamulosa (Kauf.) Sota (Polypodiaceae), an unusual behavior and host for a tortricid. Although placed provisionally in Hilarographini, tribal and subfamilial assignment of the new genus is extremely problematic owing to a mosaic of morphological characters, suggesting placement in a variety of different higher taxa. The larvae have a bisetose L-group on the prothorax, and the pupa has multiple rows of …

Lipid and fatty acid variations inCiona intestinalis ovary after tri-n-butyltin(IV)chloride exposure

2005

Reduction of total lipids (TL) content and significant variations of triglyceride (TG) and phospholipid (PL) fractions were observed as a consequence of exposure of Ciona intestinalis ovaries to tributyltin chloride (TBTCL) solutions. In particular, an evident TG decrease and a PL increase were observed, which probably provoked an increment in membrane fluidity, because of the high concentration of long chain fatty acids and, as a consequence, PL. This could be a cell adaptive standing mechanism towards the pollutants, as observed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Also the increase in the content of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), important in the synthesis of compounds such as prostagla…

Classrooms, Salons, Academies, and Courts: Mateu Orfila (1787–1853) and Nineteenth-Century French Toxicology

2014

AbstractThis paper analyses the connections between nineteenth-century courtrooms, academies, and laboratories by focusing on the life and works of Mateu Orfila (1787–1853), one of the most famous nineteenth-century toxicologists. At the apex of his career, Orfila moved regularly between his laboratory and his chair at the Paris Faculty of Medicine to meetings of the Academy of Medicine, and the courtrooms in which he was frequently called upon as an expert witness in murder trials. Tracing Orfila's biographical path, this paper deals with four main sites of nineteenth-century toxicology: classrooms, salons, academies, and courtrooms. These sites are understood as both tangible places, whos…

Typification of the names Anethum pusillum and Meum segetum (Apiaceae)

2022

Recent works (Jimenez-Mejias & Vargas 2015, Frankiewicz et al. 2021) have improved our knowledge about systematics and phylogeny of the Apiaceae: in detail, the Authors suggested the opportunity to merge several genera within Anethum Linnaeus (1753: 263), namely: Foeniculum Miller (1754: [513]), Ridolfia Moris (1841: 43), Pseudoridolfia Reduron, Mathez & S. R. Downie in Reduron et al. (2009: 496), and Schoenoselinum Jimenez-Mejias & Vargas (2015: 75). In this framework, we think that it is important to typify the names Anethum pusillum All. (Allioni 1773: 28) and Meum segetum Guss. (Gussone 1827: 346), both belonging to this “Anethum alliance” (as defined by Jimenez-Mejias &…

Cytotoxic neo-clerodane diterpenes from Stachys aegyptiaca

2018

Abstract Two new E/Z neo-clerodane diterpene isomers, trivially named stachaegyptin D (1) and E (2), together with known compounds, stachysolon monoacetate (3) and stachysolon diacetate (4), were isolated from an organic-solvent extract of the medicinal herb Stachys aegyptiaca. Structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic methods, including HREIMS, 1H, 13C, DEPT, and 2D NMR analysis, as well as, first time X-ray analysis for stachysolone (3). All isolated metabolites showed some activity against the human hepatocellular cell line, HepG2. Compound 4 was the most active with an IC50 of 59.5 μM.

In Vitro and In Vivo Antimalarial Activity Assays of Seeds from Balanites aegyptiaca: Compounds of the Extract Show Growth Inhibition and Activity ag…

2011

Balanites aegyptiaca(Balanitaceae) is a widely grown desert plant with multiuse potential. In the present paper, a crude extract fromB. aegyptiacaseeds equivalent to a ratio of 1 : 2000 seeds to the extract was screened for antiplasmodial activity. The determined IC50value for the chloroquine-susceptiblePlasmodium falciparumNF54 strain was 68.26 . Analysis of the extract by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detected 6-phenyl-2(H)-1,2,4-triazin-5-one oxime, an inhibitor of the parasitic M18 Aspartyl Aminopeptidase as one of the compounds which is responsible for thein vitroantiplasmodial activity. The crude plant extract had a of 2.35  and showed a dose-dependent response. After depletion…
