Importance of Propionibacterium acnes hemolytic activity in human intervertebral discs: A microbiological study
2018
Most patients with chronic lower back pain (CLBP) exhibit degenerative disc disease. Disc specimens obtained during initial therapeutic discectomies are often infected/colonized with Propionibacterium acnes, a Gram-positive commensal of the human skin. Although pain associated with infection is typically ascribed to the body's inflammatory response, the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus was recently observed to directly activate nociceptors by secreting pore-forming α-hemolysins that disrupt neuronal cell membranes. The hemolytic activity of P. acnes in cultured disc specimens obtained during routine therapeutic discectomies was assessed through incubation on sheep-blood agar. T…
Microbial Diversity in the Midguts of Field and Lab-Reared Populations of the European Corn Borer Ostrinia nubilalis
2011
Background: Insects are associated with microorganisms that contribute to the digestion and processing of nutrients. The European Corn Borer (ECB) is a moth present world-wide, causing severe economical damage as a pest on corn and other crops. In the present work, we give a detailed view of the complexity of the microorganisms forming the ECB midgut microbiota with the objective of comparing the biodiversity of the midgut-associated microbiota and explore their potential as a source of genes and enzymes with biotechnological applications. Methodological/Principal Findings: A high-throughput sequencing approach has been used to identify bacterial species, genes and metabolic pathways, parti…
Zarnu trakta mikrobiotas mainība bērniem antibakteriālas terapijas lietošanas gadījumā
2022
Synthesis, structure, properties and antimicrobial activity of para trifluoromethyl phenylboronic derivatives
2021
The [2-formyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]boronic acid as well as its benzoxaborole and bis(benzoxaborole) derivatives were obtained and their properties studied. The 2-formyl compound displays an unusual structure in the crystalline state, with a significant twist of the boronic group, whereas in DMSO solution it tautomerizes with formation of a cyclic isomer. All the studied compounds exhibit relatively high acidity as well as a reasonable antimicrobial activity. Docking studies showed interactions of all the investigated compounds with the binding pocket of Candida albicans LeuRS. High activity against Bacillus cereus was determined for the 2-formyl compound as well as for the novel bis(be…
Klīniski nozīmīgo gram negatīvo baktēriju rezistence pret antibakteriālajiem līdzekļiem
2015
Antimicrobial, mechanical and biocompatibility analysis of chlorhexidine digluconate-modified cements
2019
Background The focus of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of glass ionomer (GICs) modified by Chlorhexidine (CHX). Material and Methods For biocompatibility, 105 male Wistar rats were used, divided into 7 groups (n=15): Group C (Control,Polyethylene), Groups M, M10, M18, and Groups RL, RL10, RL18 (M-Meron and RL-Riva Luting: conventional, and modified with 10%, and 18% CHX, respectively). The tissues were analyzed under optical microscope for different cellular events and time intervals. Antibacterial effect and Shear Bond Strength Test (SBST) were also analyzed. Biocompatibility was analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests; SBST o…
Interspecies interactions mediated by conductive minerals in the sediments of the ferruginous Lake La Cruz, Spain
2018
AbstractLake La Cruz is considered a biogeochemical analogue to early Earth marine environments because its water column is depleted in sulfate, but rich in methane and iron, similar to conditions envisaged for much of the Precambrian. In this early Earth analogue environment, we show that conductive particles establish a tight metabolic coupling between electroactive microbial clades. We propose that mineral-based syntrophy is of potential relevance for the evolution of Earth’s earliest complex life forms. We show that the anoxic sediment of Lake La Cruz, which is rich in biogeochemically ‘reactive’ iron minerals, harbors known electroactive species such asGeobacterandMethanothrix,in addit…
NOVEL COMPOSED GALACTOSYLATED NANODEVICES CONTAINING A RIBAVIRIN PRODRUG AS HEPATIC CELL-TARGETED CARRIERS FOR HCV TREATMENT
2013
In this paper, we describe the preparation of liver-targeted nanoparticles potentially able to carry to hepatocytes a ribavirin (RBV) prodrug, exploiting the presence of carbohydrate receptors in the liver (i.e., ASGPR in hepatocytes). These particles were obtained starting from a galactosylated phospholipid-polyaminoacid conjugate. This latter was obtained by chemical reaction of ALPHA, BETA -poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl) (2-aminoethylcarbamate)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA-EDA) with 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-(succinyl) sodium salt (DPPE), and subsequent reaction with lactose, obtaining PHEA-EDA-DPPE-GAL copolymer. To enhance the entrapment into obtained nanostructures, a hydroph…
Antibacterial biopolymeric foams: Structure–property relationship and carvacrol release kinetics
2019
Abstract In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric foams containing carvacrol (CRV) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. Sodium bicarbonate (SB) was chosen as foaming agent and a commercial biodegradable polymer, Mater-Bi® (MB), as a matrix. MB/SB and MB/SB/CRV systems were prepared by melt mixing and the foaming process was conducted in a laboratory press. The influence of foaming agent and antibacterial additive content was investigated. The foamed samples were characterized through morphological analysis, mechanical tests and measurements of CRV release kinetics. Moreover, a mathematical model, i.e. power law model, was used to fit the release dat…
Conformation-specific blockade of the integrin GPIIb/IIIa: a novel antiplatelet strategy that selectively targets activated platelets.
2006
Platelet activation causes conformational changes of integrin GPIIb/IIIa (α IIb β 3 ), resulting in the exposure of its ligand-binding pocket. This provides the unique possibility to design agents that specifically block activated platelets only. We used phage display of single-chain antibody (scFv) libraries in combination with several rounds of depletion/selection to obtain human scFvs that bind specifically to the activated conformation of GPIIb/IIIa. Functional evaluation of these scFv clones revealed that fibrinogen binding to human platelets and platelet aggregation can be effectively inhibited by activation-specific scFvs. In contrast to clinically used GPIIb/IIIa blockers, which ar…
