HCV genotype 5: an orphan virus

2013

HCV genotype 5 (HCV-5) is the least known HCV genotype. It is found mainly in South Africa and in restricted areas of Belgium, Spain, France, Syria and Greece. Sporadic cases are reported worldwide. The main modes of transmission are blood transfusion and iatrogenic causes. Little is known about its origin, but various studies have elucidated its spread worldwide. In endemic areas, patients infected with HCV-5 are on average older and have a higher viral load and more advanced fibrosis than those infected with non-HCV-5 genotypes. The current standard of care for HCV-5 chronic infection is 48 weeks of dual therapy with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. ‘Favourable’ Il28B polymorphisms a…

Stool antigen assay (HpSA) is less reliable than urea breath test for post-treatment diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection

2002

Summary Background : The diagnostic yield of the stool antigen test (HpSA) in evaluating the results of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy is controversial, but many studies have used only the 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) as a gold standard which has greatly reduced their relevance. Aim : To compare the reliability of HpSA and 13C-UBT in patients post-treatment using biopsy-based methods as reference tests. Methods : A total of 100 consecutive dyspeptic patients (42 male and 58 female; mean age, 56 ± 18 years) were enrolled in our study. All patients were H. pylori positive on the basis of at least two biopsy-based methods, and underwent 1 week of treatment with various triple therap…

Optimal duration of therapy combining ranitidine bismuth citrate with clarithromycin and metronidazole in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infe…

1999

Background: Ranitidine bismuth citrate (RBC) co-prescribed with clarithromycin and metronidazole for 1 week has been shown to be an effective eradicating regimen for Helicobacter pylori. Aim: To determine the optimal duration of this regimen. Methods: A series of 165 dyspeptic patients were recruited for this randomized, open, parallel-group study. They were subdivided into three groups receiving RBC 400 mg b.d. plus clarithromycin 250 mg b.d. and metronidazole 500 mg b.d. for three different periods (4, 7 and 10 days). H. pylori infection was assessed by the concomitant positivity of CLO-test and histology performed at the pre-entry endoscopy. The bacterium was considered eradicated on the…

Production of volatile compounds in liquid cultures by six strains of coryneform bacteria

1992

The aromatic profiles of four strains of Brevibacterium linens, one strain of Brevibacterium sp. and one strain of Microbacterium sp. were determined with some pure cultures of these microorganisms in standard trypcase soy liquid medium, which enabled four of these six strains to produce flavour compounds of ripened cheese. Thirty-two flavour compounds were identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The identified flavour compounds included the following: fatty acids, alcohols, methylketones, sulphur compounds, aromatic compounds and a pyrazine. Some important differences were found among the six strains studied. The four strains of B. linens had similar flavour profiles. Their…

The impact of DAA-mediated HCV eradication on CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte trajectories in HIV/HCV coinfected patients: Data from the ICONA Foundation …

2021

HCV infection has been hypothesized as a contributor of poor CD4+ recovery in patients living with HIV (PLWHIV). Aim of this study was to evaluate CD4+, CD8+ cells and CD4/CD8 ratio trends before and after HCV treatment with direct acting agents (DAA) in PLWHIV. HIV/HCV patients enrolled in ICONA and HepaICONA cohorts with HIV-RNA≤50 copies/ml who achieved a sustained viral response after DAA treatment were studied. A linear regression model was used to investigate CD4+, CD8+ and CD4/CD8 changes 12 months before and after DAA treatment. A total of 939 HIV/HCV patients were included, 225 (24.0%) female, median age: 53 years (IQR 50–56). At DAA initiation, CD4+ T cell count was <350 cells/…

Sequestration of T lymphocytes to body fluids in tuberculosis: reversal of anergy following chemotherapy.

1999

The specificity of CD4 T lymphocytes was investigated in 6 patients affected by tuberculosis who had negative tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) skin tests at diagnosis. Polyclonal CD4 T cell lines from the peripheral blood failed to proliferate to PPD and to the 16- or 38-kDa proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, while CD4 cell lines from the disease site responded to PPD and to the 16- and 38-kDa proteins and derived epitopes in vitro. Four months after chemotherapy, the patients became responsive to PPD. The proliferative response to PPD and to the 16- or 38-kDa proteins and their derived peptides decreased in CD4 T cell lines from the disease site and increased in lines from…
