High-pressure studies of topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3

Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3 are narrow bandgap semiconductors with tetradymite crystal structure (R-3m) which have been extensively studied along with their alloys due to their promising operation as thermoelectric materials in the temperature range between 300 and 500¿K. Studies on these layered semiconductors have increased tremendously in the last years since they have been recently predicted and demonstrated to behave as 3D topological insulators. In particular, a number of high-pressure studies have been done in the recent years in these materials. Means of positive numbers appear in many applications and have been a traditional matter of study. In this work, we focus on defining a new mean of two positive values with some properties which are essential in applications, ranging from subdivision and multiresolution schemes to the numerical solution of conservation laws. In particular, three main properties are crucial—in essence, the ideas of these properties are roughly the following: to stay close to the minimum of the two values when the two arguments are far away from each other, to be quite similar to the arithmetic mean of the two values when they are similar and to satisfy a Lipchitz condition. Characterization of activated sludge settling properties with a sludge collapse-acceleration stage

Abstract The sedimentability of the activated sludge can be affected by the presence of a large variety of coagulants and polymers from a previous physical-chemical process. In this paper, the activated sludge settling process in industrial wastewater treatment plants where the sludge does not settle in a conventional way is studied. The two observed constant hindered settling velocity stages and the instant the intermediate sludge acceleration period occurs are described. A variation of the Richardson and Zaki model is used to characterize the two stages of constant settling velocity. This paper describes the general procedure followed to build a system of indicators for monitoring and evaluating the Strategy for Culture and Development of Spanish Cooperation. Taking the Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage as a reference, in this study an approach is made to questions relative to: 1) the process of evaluating a list of indicators by a panel of experts using the Delphi technique, 2) the definition and calculation of a relative operational index, 3) the process of indicator selection, and lastly, 4) how the selected indicators were assigned to form part of the basic or strategic dimension on which the system is structured. epiModel: A system to build automatically systems of differential equations of compartmental type-epidemiological models

In this paper we describe epiModel, a code developed in Mathematica that facilitates the building of systems of differential equations corresponding to type-epidemiological linear or quadratic models whose characteristics are defined in text files following an easy syntax. It includes the possibility of obtaining the equations of models involving age and/or sex groups. © 2011.

[spa] Este artículo da noticia de la actividad del centro de producción de tapices de Tortosa entre 1425 y 1513; se documentan los maestros Pere Alfonso, Berenguer Baldrich, Joan Falsison, Jaume Sastre, Pere Marquès, Loor Batur, mestre Rubert y Joan Marroquí. Además, se proponen dos hipótesis principales: que en Tortosa se intentó poner en marcha una importante manufactura de tapices ("draps de Ras") hacia 1450, y que el citado Joan Falsison es el autor del tapiz de la Santa Cena de la catedral de Tortosa.
