Soluble E-Selectin Enhances Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) Expression in Human Tumor Cell Lines
1998
E-selectin mediates neovascularization via its soluble form, while its membrane-bound form initiates binding of tumor cells to vascular endothelium. Therefore, it was studied whether soluble E-selectin regulates further adhesion molecules on tumor cells. In tumor cells but not in related nonmalignant cells, intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression was strikingly increased from 5 to 68% positive cells by in vitro inoculation of a recombinant E-selectin-IgG1 within 24 h, as analyzed by flow cytometry. The absence of changes in the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule, integrin ligands (CD11a, CD18, integrin alpha 4), and sialyl-Lewis X indicates a specific effect of solubl…
Centri storici manomessi: “antichi” come nuovi!
2012
The chapter presents the results of urban planning in Italy since 1950 and introduces the theories developed by Muratori and Caniggia for the restoration of historical centers. The paper critically shows some examples of typological restoration and introduces the debate that has developed around the outcomes of interventions.
Biosynthesis of Lipopolysaccharide-Binding Protein in Rabbit Hepatocytes
1990
Studies reported here show that the recently discovered acute-phase protein, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), is synthesized by hepatocytes. For these studies, explanted rabbit hepatocytes were grown in the presence of 35S-methionine. Biosynthetically labelled LBP in the cells and supernatant was identified using immunoprecipitation with rat anti-rabbit LBP antibody. This antibody immunoprecipitates both the LBP polypeptide and the glycosylated protein. With a cell-free translation system a comparison of RNA from normal rabbit liver with that isolated from acute-phase rabbit liver indicated that a translatable LBP message is only found in the RNA from acute-phase liver. Studies wit…
Effectiveness of substituting cyclosporin A with tacrolimus in reducing gingival overgrowth in renal transplant patients
2009
Objectives: this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of periodontal therapy combined with tacrolimus in the suppression of gingival overgrowth (GO) and the effect on GO of changing from cyclosporin A to tacrolimus. Patients and methods: sixteen renal transplant patients, averaging 52 years of age, whose kidney function was stable and were receiving treatment with cyclosporin A, were randomly assigned to one of two groups. In the experimental group, patients were instructed in oral hygiene and underwent periodontal treatment, whereas in the control group, only oral hygiene instructions were given. After the first visit and the change of medication from cyclosporine to tacrolimus in both…
An SPM-Enriched Marine Oil Supplement Shifted Microglia Polarization toward M2, Ameliorating Retinal Degeneration in rd10 Mice
2022
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common inherited retinal dystrophy causing progressive vision loss. It is accompanied by chronic and sustained inflammation, including M1 microglia activation. This study evaluated the effect of an essential fatty acid (EFA) supplement containing specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), on retinal degeneration and microglia activation in rd10 mice, a model of RP, as well as on LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. The EFA supplement was orally administered to mice from postnatal day (P)9 to P18. At P18, the electrical activity of the retina was examined by electroretinography (ERG) and innate behavior in response to light were measured. Retinal degeneration was …
Microgravity-induced alterations in signal transduction in cells of the immune system
2010
Since decades it is known that the activity of cells of the immune system is severely dysregulated in microgravity, however, the underlying molecular aspects have not been elucidated yet. The identification of gravity-sensitive molecular mechanisms in cells of the immune system is an important and indispensable prerequisite for the development of counteractive measures to prevent or treat disturbed immune cell function of astronauts during long-term space missions. Moreover, their sensitivity to altered gravity renders immune cells an ideal model system to understand if and how gravity on Earth is required for normal mammalian cell function and signal transduction. We investigated the effec…
La dimensión social del lenguaje como una oportunidad educativa para la promoción del diálogo intercultural en el aula de Educación Superior
2021
[EN] For some time, it has been considered the need to approach the educational experience to the student sociocultural reality in the context of a classroom in Higher Education. This need is even more evident in the context of international exchange programs, in which the main objective is precisely to provide a space for mutual enrichment between the student's culture of origin and the host culture. In this sense, the “Grup d’Acompanyament Lingüístic” (GRUPal) works to promote the intercultural dialogue that inevitably and spontaneously takes place in and outside the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to present a didactic intervention based on inclusion and cooperative exchange as w…
Rosyjski korpus posiłkowy (auksyliarny) na służbie Augusta II w Rzeczypospolitej i Saksonii. Nowe spojrzenie na sasko-polsko-rosyjską współpracę poli…
2019
W zaprezentowanym artykule recenzyjnym prob…
