Association of attentional network function with exon 5 variations of the CHRNA4 gene

2007

Mutational analyses in xenopus oocyte and mice models indicate that the positive effect of nicotine on attention may be modulated by genetic variations within exon 5 of the alpha4 subunit of the nicotinergic acetylcholine receptor gene CHRNA4. The potential relevance of exon 5 is further emphasized by two recent family-based association studies of nicotine dependence because subgroups of nicotine-dependent subjects are thought to 'self-medicate' attentional deficits with nicotine. We investigated a synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP): rs1044396, which has recently been associated with nicotine-dependence, plus two adjacent synonymous SNPs rs1044394 and rs1044393 in exon 5 of n …

The long and complex road in the search for treatment for mental disorders: An analysis of the process in five groups of patients

2016

Seeking treatment for mental-health problems is a complex process, with different underlying motives in each stage. However, the entire process and these motives have hardly been investigated. This study aims to analyze the different stages of the help-seeking process and their underlying motives in five groups of patients with different mental disorders. In all, 156 patients seeking treatment in outpatient mental health clinics were individually interviewed: 71 had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), 21 had Agoraphobia (AGO), 18 had Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), 20 had Anorexia Nervosa (AN), and 22 had Cocaine Dependence (COC). The AGO and MDD patients delayed significantly less time i…

Mycotoxin Dietary Exposure Assessment through Fruit Juices Consumption in Children and Adult Population

2019

Consumption of fruit juice is becoming trendy for consumers seeking freshness and high vitamin and low caloric intake. Mycotoxigenic moulds may infect fruits during crop growth, harvest, and storage leading to mycotoxin production. Many mycotoxins are resistant to food processing, which make their presence in the final juice product very likely expected. In this way, the presence of 30 mycotoxins including aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), aflatoxin G1 (AFG1), aflatoxin G2 (AFG2), alternariol (AOH), alternariol monomethyl ether (AME), Ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2), enniatin A (ENNA), enniatin A1 (ENNA1), enniatin B (ENNB), enniatin B1 (ENNB1), beauverici…

Clinical patterns and electrophysiological findings in retinal pigment epithelium diseases. Does a correlation exist?

1986

At present it is difficult to distinguish those human chorioretinal diseases in which the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the primary site of dysfunction. This difficulty is caused by several factors such as scarcity of biochemical and histological information and a lack of correlation of basic science information available with the clinical body of knowledge. In the present study we examined 134 eyes at early or late stages of hereditary diseases involving the RPE. We tried to distinguish primary RPE involvement by using standard ERG (a- and b-wave) and EOG testing. We conclude that in general primary RPE damage can be better assessed by current electrophysiology in those diseases whic…

Differentiation in medulloblastomas: correlation between the immunocytochemical demonstration of photoreceptor markers (S-antigen, rod-opsin) and the…

1989

Biopsy specimens of 66 medulloblastomas were investigated by means of S-antigen and rod-opsin immunocytochemistry. The patients were operated between 1969 and 1988 and the medical records were retrospectively evaluated to correlate the immunocytochemical features of the tumors to the course of the disease. S-antigen- and rod-opsin-immunoreactive tumor cells were found in 19 out of 66 cases. Since in the normal non-neoplastic state immunoreactive S-antigen and rod-opsin are restricted to retinal photoreceptors and a class of pinealocytes derived from photoreceptor cells, the occurrence of these proteins in certain tumor cells of medulloblastomas suggests a differentiation of these cells alon…

Oral postinflammatory pigmentation : an analysis of 7 cases

2010

Oral postinflammatory pigmentation (OPP) is a discoloration of the oral mucosa caused by an excess of melanin production and deposition within the basal layer of the epithelium and connective tissue of areas affected by chronic inflammation. Therefore, it is mandatory to demonstrate the association with a previous or concomitant inflammatory process in the same area of oral mucosa. Clinically OPP appears as a localized or diffuse, black to brown pigmentation. OPP may persist for many years even though the disappearing of the pigmentation after the resolution of the inflammatory state has been reported. We reviewed retrospectively the medical records and, when performed, biopsy examinations …

Intrahepatic IgG/IgM plasma cells ratio helps in classifying autoimmune liver diseases.

2010

Abstract Background/Aim Plasma cells infiltrate in the liver is a prototype lesion of autoimmune liver diseases. The possible role of plasma cells isotyping (IgM and IgG) in the liver in the diagnostic definition of autoimmune liver disease, and particularly in variant syndromes such as autoimmune cholangitis and the primary biliary cirrhosis/autoimmune hepatitis overlap syndrome, is less defined. Methods We analysed the clinical, serological and histological features of 83 patients with autoimmune liver disease (40 primary biliary cirrhosis, 20 autoimmune hepatitis, 13 primary sclerosing cholangitis, 4 autoimmune cholangitis and 6 overlap syndrome) compared to 34 patients with chronic hepa…
