LAight® Therapy Significantly Enhances Treatment Efficacy of 16 Weeks of Topical Clindamycin Solution in Hurley I and II Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Re…

2021

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory, burdensome skin disease where medical first-line treatment is still limited to long-term, topical and/or systemic antibiotics. The RELIEVE study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of LAight® therapy – a combination of intense pulsed light and radiofrequency – as an adjunct treatment to first-line therapies in Hurley stage I and II HS. Methods: The RELIEVE study was performed as a two-period multicenter randomized controlled trial with blinded assessment. For period A from week 0 to week 16, the 88 participating subjects were randomized into either a…

Are biological drugs effective and safe in older severe asthmatics?

2019

Introduction: The treatment of asthma in older ages follows the recommendations of international guidelines for the management of asthma in younger ages, although older age has always represented an exclusion criterion for eligibility to pharmacological trials. This poses a clinical challenge when deciding whether elderly severe asthmatics are candidates for biological drugs. Areas covered: The current article has a narrative structure to review the current literature on efficacy and safety of novel pharmacological drugs against immunoglobulins and interleukins that mediate and orchestrate the main inflammatory pathways in severe asthma, in order to explore whether older subjects (i.e. >…

Sex Differences in Severity of Stroke in the INSTRUCT Study: a Meta‐Analysis of Individual Participant Data

2018

Background Women have worse outcomes after stroke than men, and this may be partly explained by stroke severity. We examined factors contributing to sex differences in severity of acute stroke assessed by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale. Methods and Results We pooled individual participant data with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale assessment (N=6343) from 8 population‐based stroke incidence studies (1996–2014), forming part of INSTRUCT (International Stroke Outcomes Study). Information on sociodemographics, stroke‐related clinical factors, comorbidities, and pre‐stroke function were obtained. Within each study, relative risk regression using log‐binominal modeling…

Is COVID‐19 infection more severe in kidney transplant recipients?

2021

International audience; There are no studies which have compared the risk of severe Covid-19 and related mortality between transplant recipients and non-transplant patients. We enrolled two groups of patients hospitalized for Covid-19, i.e., kidney transplant recipients from the French Registry of Solid Organ Transplant (n=306) and a single-center cohort of non-transplant patients (n=795). An analysis was performed among subgroups matched for age and risk factors for severe Covid-19 or mortality. Severe Covid-19 was defined as admission (or transfer) to an intensive care unit, need for mechanical ventilation, or death.Transplant recipients were younger and had more comorbidities compared to…

„JESTEŚ TYM, CO JESZ” : o potędze „czystej” diety

2022

What we learn about bipolar disorder from large-scale neuroimaging

2020

Abstract MRI‐derived brain measures offer a link between genes, the environment and behavior and have been widely studied in bipolar disorder (BD). However, many neuroimaging studies of BD have been underpowered, leading to varied results and uncertainty regarding effects. The Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta‐Analysis (ENIGMA) Bipolar Disorder Working Group was formed in 2012 to empower discoveries, generate consensus findings and inform future hypothesis‐driven studies of BD. Through this effort, over 150 researchers from 20 countries and 55 institutions pool data and resources to produce the largest neuroimaging studies of BD ever conducted. The ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Workin…

Andreasa Bana ucieczka ze świata ("Belladonna” Dašy Drndić i "O starzeniu się” Jeana Améry’ego)

2016

The paper analyses the final phase in the life of of Daša Drndić’s Belladonna’s protagonist. In the last years of his existence, Andreas Ban’s consciousness is dominated by the thoughts about illness and the nearing retirement. Commonly, both these phenomena mark the threshold of an old age. When it comes to this particular character, they amplify the sensation of solitude (initially stemming from the keen sense of criticism that Ban displays) as well as impotence (connected to the disagreement with the existence of asenile and poor life of an aged man to which Ban is doomed). Drndić uses her novel’s protagonist to accuse both the Croatian state and the contemporary civilization of fetishiz…

European guidelines on chronic mesenteric ischaemia - joint United European Gastroenterology, European Association for Gastroenterology, Endoscopy an…

2020

Chronic mesenteric ischaemia is a severe and incapacitating disease, causing complaints of post-prandial pain, fear of eating and weight loss. Even though chronic mesenteric ischaemia may progress to acute mesenteric ischaemia, chronic mesenteric ischaemia remains an underappreciated and undertreated disease entity. Probable explanations are the lack of knowledge and awareness among physicians and the lack of a gold standard diagnostic test. The underappreciation of this disease results in diagnostic delays, underdiagnosis and undertreating of patients with chronic mesenteric ischaemia, potentially resulting in fatal acute mesenteric ischaemia. This guideline provides a comprehensive overvi…

Silmitön ja väkivaltainen : erään mielisairaalapotilaan ura 1900-luvulla

2018

Kysymyksiin vastaamiseen tarvitaan kontekstin, suomalaisen psykiatrian, tuntemista. Katrin yhteenlaskettu hoitoaika piirimielisairaalassa kesti yli 40 vuotta, ja tuo ajanjakso sisältää miltei kaikki 1900-luvulla käytetyt hoitomuodot. Sairauskertomuksen lääketieteelli…

Malinteso e conflitto: il sottile confine tra negoziare e agire

2014

"Misunderstanding" originates from the comunicative difficulties that arise between two people or groups due to linguistic or cultural issues, and stems from the difficulties produced by the difference between the subjects involved in a relationship. A peculiarity of misunderstanding is the anticipation of a possible resolution. This allows us to keep the relationship in a suspended state, preserving its progression while waiting for clarification or separation. By contrast, in a conflictual situation, both partners are engaged in a long-lasting relationship, which transforms the contenders' nature itself. Indeed, both the parties involved in a conflict shape themselves in a reciprocal rela…
