Survival of implants placed with the osteotome technique : an update. Review

2012

A literature review is made to analyze the survival of implants placed with the osteotome technique. A PubMed search was made based on the key words “osteotome AND dental implants”, corresponding to publications between 1998-2008. The inclusion criteria were: a) a minimum of 10 patients; b) a minimum follow-up of 6 months; c) implants placed using the osteotome technique with or without indirect sinus lift; and d) specification of the implant number and survival rate. Sixty-four articles were identified, of which 20 met the inclusion criteria. A total of 2006 implants were placed in 1312 patients using the osteotome technique. The duration of follow-up after prosthetic loading ranged from 6…

Stability and marginal bone loss in implants placed using piezoelectric osteotomy versus conventional drilling: systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Background The main objective of this systematic review was to compare primary and secondary implant stability between placement with piezoelectric osteotomy and conventional drilling, comparing marginal bone losses as a secondary objective. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted using PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Cochrane Library (Wiley) databases, besides a manual search. Results A total of 153 articles were retrieved, 39 from Pubmed, 44 from Scopus, and 70 from the Cochrane Library. After removing duplicates, 112 articles (1 from the manual search) were screened, and 9 were finally selected for qualitative and statistical analyses. Conclusions Piezoelectric surgery is a…

The use of morphokinetics as a predictor of embryo implantation.

2011

Background Time-lapse observation presents an opportunity for optimizing embryo selection based on morphological grading as well as providing novel kinetic parameters, which may further improve accurate selection of viable embryos. The objective of this retrospective study was to identify the morphokinetic parameters specific to embryos that were capable of implanting. In order to compare a large number of embryos, with minimal variation in culture conditions, we have used an automatic embryo monitoring system. Methods Using a tri-gas IVF incubator with a built-in camera designed to automatically acquire images at defined time points, we have simultaneously monitored up to 72 individual emb…

The surface modification of polymers to modulate endothelial cell growth

1996

The effect of nitrogen ion implantation or ion-assisted film deposition on the growth of human endothelial cells in vitro on a substrate has been studied. It was shown that the largest change occurs when TiO2 films were reactively sputtered onto the substrates, while the most passive surface was reactively sputtered SiO2. SEM pictures of the cells adhering to the various treated surfaces show that the cells were healthy. Future studies on the effect of alloy films and their oxides and nitrides are proposed.

Control of endothelial cell adhesion to polymer surface by ion implantation

2001

The bio-compatibility of ion implanted polymers has been studied by means of in vitro attachment measurements of bovine aorta endothelial cells. The specimens used were polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). He+ and Ne+ ion implantation were performed at an energy of 150 keV with fluences between 1 × 1013 to 1 × 1017ions/cm2 at room temperature. Wettability was estimated by means of a sessile drop method. The chemical and physical structures of ion implanted polymers were investigated by contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis in relation to cell attachment behavior. The…

Characterization of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) modified by ion implantation

2004

Abstract Surface modification of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is induced by ion implantation of different ions at 300 keV energy. The aim of this work was the chemical, physical and mechanical characterization of the modified material in order to know deep inside about the effect of the ion beam upon the polymer. The irradiated surfaces are investigated by Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption and micro-hardness analysis, scanning electron microscopy. Pin on disc measurements valuated the wear of the UHMWPE against a stainless steel probe; wear resistance increases of about 76% after the ion implantation. This result can be attributed to the ion bombardment inducing a…

Current trends on subtotal petrosectomy with cochlear implantation in recalcitrant chronic middle ear disorders

2023

Objective. To establish the safety and effectiveness of subtotal petrosectomy with cochlear implantation in patients affected by chronic middle ear disorders to refractory to previous surgical treatments. Methods. A multicentre, retrospective study was conducted on patients affected by recalcitrant chronic middle ear disorders who underwent cochlear implantation in combi-nation with subtotal petrosectomy. Patients’ details were collected from databases of 11 Italian tertiary referral centres. Additionally, a review of the most updated literature was carried out. Results. 55 patients were included with a mean follow-up time of 44 months. Cholestea-toma was the most common middle ear recurren…

Evaluation of the primary stability in dental implants placed in low density bone with a new drilling technique, osseodensification: an in vitro study

2020

Background Primary stability is an important key determinant of implant osseointegration. We investigated approaches to improve primary implant stability using a new drilling technique termed osseodensification (OD), which was compared with the conventional under-drilling (UD) method utilized for low-density bones. Material and Methods We placed 55 conical internal connection implants in each group, in 30 low-density sections of pig tibia. The implants were placed using twist drill bits in both groups; groups Under Drilling (UD) and Osseodensification (OD) included bone sections subjected to conventional UD and OD drilling, respectively. Before placing the implants, we randomized the bone s…

In human cumulus cells, the apoptotic rate may be considered an indicator for the selection of embryos to improve ongoing pregnancy and implantation …

2014

In order to identify the embryos with higher implantation potential to increase the clinical outcomes after ICSI, the apoptotic rate in human cumulus cells for the embryo selection on day 3, as an adjunct to morphology evaluation, could be considered a new tool compared with embryo selection by morphology alone. Several studies have demonstrated a lower cumulus cell apoptotic rate in women who achieved pregnancy compared with women who did not become pregnant after ICSI. A prospective randomized observational study on 76 ICSI patients was performed before Ovum Pick-Up. Patients were randomized into either the control group (embryo selection by morphology only, A group: 48 patients) or the t…
