Exploring the Background: Puzzles, Afterthoughts, and Replies

2017

In this paper I review the comments, and reply to the objections, put forward in the commentaries to my essay “Pre-conventions. A fragment of the Background”, published in issues n. 30 and 33 of Revus – Journal for Constitutional Theory and Philosophy of Law. My remarks fall under the following headings: 1. The social dimension of pre-conventions; 2. Pre-conventions and ordinary habits and dispositions; 3. Whether my examples are mistaken; 4. Reasons and causes; 5. Normative facts; 6. Whether abstract entities can be causes; 7. Are pre-conventions conditions of Lewis-conventions? 8. What can pre-conventions do for legal theory? 9. Whether I discharged my argumentative burdens. Being Opposite. On the translation of antikeimena in Aristotle's De anima

2012

The main concern of this article is the interpretation of De Anima II.4 415a14-23, and the particular way by which it is generally translated by modern editors. Almost all modern translations adopt the two locutions - \emph{objects} and \emph{correlative objects} - to translate the Greek word \antikeimena. But this choice is not neutral, nor it is without consequences for the understanding of the text.

Simulating Actions with the Associative Self-Organizing Map

2013

We present a system that can learn to represent actions as well as to internally simulate the likely continuation of their initial parts. The method we propose is based on the Associative Self Organizing Map (A-SOM), a variant of the Self Organizing Map. By emulating the way the human brain is thought to perform pattern recognition tasks, the A- SOM learns to associate its activity with di erent inputs over time, where inputs are observations of other's actions. Once the A-SOM has learnt to recognize actions, it uses this learning to predict the continuation of an observed initial movement of an agent, in this way reading its intentions. We evaluate the system's ability to simulate actions …

Efectos de la inteligencia emocional sobre la intención y la autoeficacia emprendedora

2014

Past studies associated emotional intelligence with positive workplace outcomes, such as job performance and job satisfaction. However, to date, the relationship between emotional intelligence and individual differences in entrepreneurship has been scarcely examined. In this study, the contribution of emotional intelligence dimensions to entrepreneurial potential is explored, controlling for the influence of personality traits and demographic variables. Using a sample of 394 participants, it has been tested, by means of multiple hierarchical regression analyses, the mediating role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy in the relationship between emotional intelligence dimensions and the intentio…

Effects of emotional intelligence on entrepreneurial intention and self-efficacy

2014

Protocol for developing a mental imagery intervention: a randomised controlled trial testing a novel implementation imagery e-health intervention to …

IntroductionDrowning due to driving into floodwater accounts for a significant proportion of all deaths by drowning. Despite awareness campaigns such as ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’, people continue to drive into floodwater. This causes loss of life, risk to rescuers and damage to vehicles. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate an online e-health intervention to promote safe driving behaviour during flood events. Methods and analysisThe study will use a 2×3 randomised controlled trial in which participants are randomised into one of two conditions: (1) education about the risks of driving into floodwater or (2) education about the risks of driving into floodwater plus a theory-ba…

Perceived behavioral control moderating effects in the theory of planned behavior : A meta-analysis

2022

Objective: According to the theory of planned behavior, individuals are more likely to act on their behavioral intentions, and report intentions aligned with their attitudes and subjective norm, when their perceived behavioral control (PBC) is high. We tested these predictions meta-analytically by estimating the moderating effect of PBC on the attitude-intention, subjective norm-intention, and the intention-behavior relations in studies applying the theory in the health behavior domain. Method: We conducted a preregistered secondary analysis of studies (k = 39, total N = 13,121) from two programs of research. Each study measured participants’ attitude, subjective norms, PBC, and intentions …

Understanding Blood versus Blond Orange Consumption: A Cross-Cultural Study in Four Countries

2022

Understanding consumer perceptions and attitudes to specific fruit is key information for not only increasing fruit consumption, but also for marketing reasons. It may also give clues to breeders to set quality objectives. This study explores different aspects that help to explain blood vs. blond orange consumption: availability and consumption habit, satisfaction attributes, facilitators and consumption barriers, consumption contexts, expectations and purchase intention. The study was conducted in China, Mexico, Spain and Italy, where citrus fruit consumers were invited to respond an online questionnaire. Our results revealed Italy as the country with the highest availability and consumpti…

Optimal duration of therapy combining ranitidine bismuth citrate with clarithromycin and metronidazole in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infe…

1999

Background: Ranitidine bismuth citrate (RBC) co-prescribed with clarithromycin and metronidazole for 1 week has been shown to be an effective eradicating regimen for Helicobacter pylori. Aim: To determine the optimal duration of this regimen. Methods: A series of 165 dyspeptic patients were recruited for this randomized, open, parallel-group study. They were subdivided into three groups receiving RBC 400 mg b.d. plus clarithromycin 250 mg b.d. and metronidazole 500 mg b.d. for three different periods (4, 7 and 10 days). H. pylori infection was assessed by the concomitant positivity of CLO-test and histology performed at the pre-entry endoscopy. The bacterium was considered eradicated on the…
