QUADRUPOLAR CHARACTER OF THE Ti K-EDGE PREPEAKS IN TiO2 BY RESONANT AUGER

2002

Resonant spectroscopies offer a new opportunity to get more insight into excited electronic states by studying line shapes and intensities of decay processes. For photon excitations in the pre-K-edge region, the Ti KL 2,3 L 2,3 Auger spectra in TiO 2 show additional peaks when an electron is promoted in localized d-like states via a quadrupolar transition. This resonant process is used to unravel the respective contributions of quadrupolar and dipolar transitions to the absorption edge prepeaks.

Determining the optical properties of adsorbate covered surfaces by dichroism in VUV-photoemission

The dichroic effects of photoemission excited by polarised light depend on the angle of photon incidence. Measurements of the difference in the angle-resolved photoemission intensities from Cs 5p semi-corelevels excited by photons of opposite helicity, or of orthogonal linear polarisation are reported. It was thought that the dependence of dichroism on the angle of incidence cannot be described using equations omitting metal optics. A complete consideration of the vector potential of the exciting light is needed, including the phase shift between it's parallel and perpendicular components. Scanning optical microscopy modeling in nanoplasmonics

International audience; One of the main purposes of nanoplasmonics is the miniaturization of optical and electro-optical components that could be integrable in coplanar geometry. In this context, we propose a numerical model of a polarized scanning optical microscope able to faithfully reproduce both photon luminescence and temperature distribution images associated with complex plasmonic structures. AN EXPERIMENTAL PROOF OF THE BACK-SCATTERING MODEL FOR DICHROIC EFFECTS IN VUV PHOTOEMISSION

The energy dependence of the circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD) was investigated from the shallow Cs 5p core levels. Cesium was prepared in a hexagonal ordered monolayer on W(110). The results are mainly influenced by scattering of the photoelectrons within the adlayer. At low energies, the behavior observed is described by means of a model that treats only the back-scattering of photoelectrons at the potential step between the adlayer and the substrate. It leads to a simple method determining the position of the monolayer with respect to the substrate. ORMOSIL thin films: Tuning mechanical properties via a nanochemistry approach

The mechanical properties (hardness and elastic modulus) of organically modified silicate thin films can be finely tuned by varying the degree of alkylation and thus the fraction of six- and four-membered siloxane rings in the organosilica matrix. This opens the way to large tunability of parameters that are of crucial practical importance for films that are finding increasing application in numerous fields ranging from microelectronics to chemical sensing.

The linguistic representation of gender violence in (written) media discourse

‘Woman’ is a key social actor, and a central conceptualization, in the construction of media discourses of gender-based violence. Scholarly research at the turn of the 21st century (Bengoechea 2000; Lledó 2002; Fernández Díaz 2003; Jorge 2004) showed that in the Spanish press, media discourses had a tendency to naturalize male aggression not as violence but as part of the (private) sexual arrangement between the sexes. A framework for sign language sentence recognition by common sense context

This correspondence proposes a complete framework for sign language recognition that integrates a commonsense engine in order to deal with sentence recognition. The proposed system is based on a multilevel architecture that allows modeling and managing of the knowledge of the recognition process in a simple and robust way. A 1D coupled Schrödinger drift-diffusion model including collisions

We consider a one-dimensional coupled stationary Schroedinger drift-diffusion model for quantum semiconductor device simulations. The device domain is decomposed into a part with large quantum effects (quantum zone) and a part where quantum effects are negligible (classical zone). We give boundary conditions at the classic-quantum interface which are current preserving. Collisions within the quantum zone are introduced via a Pauli master equation. To illustrate the validity we apply the model to three resonant tunneling diodes.

Abstract The theory of quantum electrodynamics has presented a complete calculation of the energy levels of positronium (Ps, e + e − ) up to the order R ∞ α 4 . The annihilation rates for para -Ps (1 1 S 0 ) and ortho -Ps (1 1 S 1 ) are completely known up to the order R ∞ α 5 and R ∞ α 6 , respectively. The present experimental uncertainty for spectroscopic results is 5–100 times larger than the theoretical uncertainty. For the annihilation rates the experimental situation is even worse.
