Induction of a recall deficit by rapid-rate transcranial magnetic stimulation

1994

We used rapid-rate, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for the noninvasive study of verbal recall. Five right-handed normal subjects were studied. Recall followed immediately after presentation of a 12-word list. Focal rTMS was applied with a figure eight coil in trains of 500 ms duration to F7, F8, T5, T6, P3, P4, or O1, O2 at latencies of 0, 250, 500, or 1000 ms during word list presentation. Recall was consistently significantly diminished only after left mid-temporal and bilateral dorsofrontal rTMS at both 0 and 250 ms latencies. We conclude that rTMS may be useful as a non-invasive tool for the study of verbal memory processes.

Phytosterol plasma concentrations and coronary heart disease in the prospective Spanish EPIC cohort

2010

Phytosterol intake with natural foods, a measure of healthy dietary choices, increases plasma levels, but increased plasma phytosterols are believed to be a coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factor. To address this paradox, we evaluated baseline risk factors, phytosterol intake, and plasma noncholesterol sterol levels in participants of a case control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Spanish cohort who developed CHD (n = 299) and matched controls (n = 584) who remained free of CHD after a 10 year follow-up. Sitosterol-to-cholesterol ratios increased across tertiles of phytosterol intake (P = 0.026). HDL-cholesterol level increased, …

Overview of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in childhood and pregnancy.

2001

Despite the fact that the study and applicability of ambulatory blood pressure in children and pregnant women share characteristics which limit the potential development of knowledge for their use, advances produced in the last few years provided the present knowledge regarding the significance and the potential use of ambulatory blood pressure in children and in the pregnant women. In children ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is useful for the diagnosis of mild hypertensives, assessment of refractory hypertension, therapeutic trials with antihypertensive drugs, and clinical investigation when BP is one of the parameters to be taken into account and/or when subtle BP abnormalities are t…

Trends in Incidence and Transmission Patterns of COVID-19 in Valencia, Spain

2021

Importance Limited information on the transmission and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 at the city scale is available. Objective To describe the local spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Valencia, Spain. Design, Setting, and Participants This single-center epidemiological cohort study of patients with SARS-CoV-2 was performed at University General Hospital in Valencia (population in the hospital catchment area, 364 000), a tertiary hospital. The study included all consecutive patients with COVID-19 isolated at home from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic on February 19 until August 31, 2020. Exposures Cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by the presence of IgM antibodies or a positive polymerase chain reacti…

Long-term Effects of Multimodal Treatment on Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms: Follow-up Analysis of the COMPAS Trial.

2019

Key Points Question What are the long-term results of multimodal treatment for adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when comparing cognitive behavioral group psychotherapy (GPT) with individual clinical management (CM) in combination with either methylphenidate or placebo? Findings In this follow-up assessment of the Comparison of Methylphenidate and Psychotherapy in Adult ADHD Study (COMPAS), a multicenter randomized clinical trial, 256 adults participated in follow-up 1.5 years after the intervention ended. The severity of ADHD symptoms improved in all 4 prior treatment groups, with no significant difference found between GPT and CM, but methylphenidate was associated wit…

Unconventional Aeronautical Investigatory Methods: The Case of Alitalia Flight AZ 112

2021

Viene svelato scientificamente la causa del disastro aereo di Montagna Longa del 5 maggio 1972 Based on unconventional air investigation techniques, this book highlights the mysterious crash of Alitalia flight AZ 112 on 5 May 1972, which killed 115 people, and was blamed solely on pilot negligence. Its findings show the cause of the disaster was not actually related to any pilot negligence, but, rather, it was the result of a criminal act. It argues that this attack was a symptom of the geopolitical tensions in Italy and Europe in that decade. Based on unconventional air investigation techniques, this book highlights the mysterious crash of Alitalia flight AZ 112 on 5 May 1972

Effect of 3,4-dichloroaniline on the early life stages of the zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio): results of a comparative laboratory study.

1991

An early life-stage (ELS) test was conducted with the zebrafish and 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) in eight laboratories. Based on the results from all eight laboratories, an LOEC of 200 micrograms 3,4-dichloroaniline/liter applies for the early life stages of the zebrafish. Effects observed were reduction of the survival rate and malformations. If the 100 micrograms/liter concentration additionally tested by one laboratory is included in the assessment, an LOEC of 100 micrograms 3,4-DCA/liter is obtained for the survival rate and increase in length. The NOEC is 20 micrograms/liter. The present results of a comparative laboratory study with the zebrafish show that a 42-day ELS test can be co…

Can personality predict retirement behaviour? A longitudinal analysis combining survey and register data from Norway.

2017

Published version of an article in the journal: European Journal of Ageing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10433-011-0212-6 This study investigates how far personality can predict the timing and routes of people’s retirement. It uses a large comprehensive Norwegian survey, with larger sample size than earlier related studies, providing estimates of personality based on the five-factor model. The survey data are matched with administrative data, allowing observations of retirement over the 2002–2007 period. The analysis distinguishes between the disability and the non-disability retirements. Retirement is investigated using discrete time, competing risk, log…
