Evaluation of nocturnal vs. morning measures of heart rate indices in young athletes
2022
Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability in young endurance athletes during nocturnal sleep and in the morning; and to assess whether changes in these values are associated with changes in submaximal running (SRT) and counter-movement jump (CMJ) performance. Methods During a three-week period of similar training, eleven athletes (16 ± 1 years) determined daily HR and heart rate variability (RMSSD) during sleep utilizing a ballistocardiographic device (Emfit QS), as well as in the morning with a HR monitor (Polar V800). Aerobic fitness and power production were assessed employing SRT and CMJ test. Results Comparison of the average values fo…
Broncalt®, class II medical device, in patients with chronic upper airways disease: a survey in clinical practice
2019
Inflammation and infection are common pathogenic mechanisms involved in many otorhinolaryngological (ORL) chronic diseases. Broncalt® is a class II Medical Device containing: thermal water (Medesano, PR, Italy), hyaluronic acid, and grapefruit seed extract. It could exert a safe and effective anti-inflammatory, washing, and antimicrobial activity by virtue of these components. Therefore, the aim of the current survey, conducted in clinical practice of 84 Italian ORL centers, was to evaluate its safety and efficacy in the treatment of patients with chronic upper airways disease. The 1,817 (958 males, mean age 49 years) patients were evaluated at baseline (T0) and after one (T1) and two (T2) …

An optimisation model for daily manpower allocation in transhipment container terminals
2011
This work is motivated by the manpower allocation problem arising at the Cagliari International Terminal Container. Generally speaking, human resources allocation plays a key role in terminals with high labor costs, in order to achieve high levels of productivity and quality services for customers. As a result, terminal containers exhibit a growing interest in advanced decision support systems, in which optimization methods play a crucial role. In this talk we present an optimization model for manpower allocation in transshipment container terminals. The objective is to determine the optimal daily allocation of crane operators and trailer drivers at an operational planning level, taking int…
Numerical study for a new methodology of flaws detection in train axles
2013
Train loads and travel speeds have increased over time, requiring more efficient non-destructive inspection methods. Railway axles are critical elements; despite being designed to last more than 20 years several cases of premature failure have been recorded. Train axles are inspected regularly, but the limits associated to the traditional inspection technologies create a growing interest towards new solutions. Here a novel non-destructive inspection method of in-service axles based on non-contact data collection is presented. The propagation of surface waves, generated by a thermo-elastic laser source, is investigated using a finite element method based on dynamic explicit integration. Coup…
Effect of pseudo-gravitational acceleration on the dissolution rate of miscible drops
2017
The effect of pseudo-gravitational acceleration on the dissolution process of two phase miscible systems has been investigated at high acceleration values using a spinning drop tensiometer with three systems: 1-butanol/water, isobutyric acid/water, and triethylamine/water. We concluded that the dissolution process involves at least three different transport phenomena: diffusion, barodiffusion, and gravitational (buoyancy-driven) convection. The last two phenomena are significantly affected by the centrifugal acceleration acting at the interface between the two fluids, and the coupling with the geometry of the dissolving drop leads to a change of the mass flux during the course of the dissol…
Detection of changes in mitochondrial hydrogen sulfide i n vivo in the fish model Poecilia mexicana (Poeciliidae)
2019
ABSTRACT In this paper, we outline the use of a mitochondria-targeted ratiometric mass spectrometry probe, MitoA, to detect in vivo changes in mitochondrial hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in Poecilia mexicana (family Poeciliidae). MitoA is introduced via intraperitoneal injection into the animal and is taken up by mitochondria, where it reacts with H2S to form the product MitoN. The MitoN/MitoA ratio can be used to assess relative changes in the amounts of mitochondrial H2S produced over time. We describe the use of MitoA in the fish species P. mexicana to illustrate the steps for adopting the use of MitoA in a new organism, including extraction and purification of MitoA and MitoN from tissues foll…
Unbaffled, Stirred Bioreactors for Animal Cell Cultivation
2017
One of the main features of animal cell bioreactors is that the cultured cells lack a strong membrane and are therefore more prone to shear damage. It is widely accepted that animal cell damage in aerated bioreactors is mainly related to burst bubbles at the air–liquid interface. A viable alternative to sparged bioreactors, aimed at minimizing cell damage, may be represented by uncovered, unbaffled, stirred tanks, which are able to provide sufficient mass transfer through the deep free surface vortex that takes place under agitation. As a consequence the need for bubble formation and subsequent bursting accompanied by cell damage is conveniently avoided. In this chapter, mass transfer perfo…
Multifunctionality in hybrid magnetic materials based on bimetallic oxalate complexes.
2011
This tutorial review illustrates the design of multifunctional oxalate-based magnetic materials through the combination of the intrinsic magnetism of the metal–organic framework and the additional properties introduced by several organic/inorganic functional cations.
Study of the influence of dithizone as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor on the corrosion behaviour of AA7075 aluminium alloy in neutral chloride s…
2021
The effect of 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone (dithizone) as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for protection of AA7075 aluminium alloy in chloride containing aggressive environment was studied by means of weight-loss, electrochemical measurements and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the addition of dithizone decreases significantly the corrosion rate of AA7075 alloy, with efficiency proportional to the inhibitor concentration. The polarization curves show that dithizone works as mixed-type inhibitor to slow down the anodic and cathodic reaction kinetic. The morphology revealed by scanning electron microscopy and the Raman spectroscopy analysis clearly shows that the inhibitor cont…
