Tumor Blood Flow and O2 Availability during Hemodilution

1984

An insufficient and heterogeneously distributed nutritive blood flow leads to an inadequate and nonuniform supply of O2 and substrates in many solid tumors (Vaupel, 1977, 1979, 1982). This deterioration of the supply conditions, which already occurs in very early growth stages and which is superimposed by a deterioration of diffusive transport during advanced growth stages, is paralleled by a decrease in the therapeutic efficacy of various cancer treatment modalities such as irradiation and chemotherapy with antiproliferative drugs. In the case of anticancer drugs, the efficiency may be reduced by affecting both pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In the latter case this is due to the de…

Synthesis and antiproliferative activity of a natural like glucosyl polycyclic compound

2014

A new polycylic compound was synthesized and evaluated for its antiproliferative activity against the NCI panel of human tumoral cell lines showing IC50 values in the range 0.47-5.43 µM. The compound induced a decrease of the level of cyclin B1, whereas increased the level of the inhibitor p21 WAF1

Phytochemical and pharmacological properties of essential oils from Cedrus species

2017

Natural products frequently exert pharmacological activities. The present review gives an overview of the ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Cedrus genus, e.g. cytotoxic, spasmolytic immunomodulatory, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Cancer patients frequently seek remedies from traditional medicinal plants that are believed to exert less side effects than conventional therapy with synthetic drugs. A long-lasting goal of anti-cancer and anti-microbial therapy research is to find compounds with reduced side effects compared to currently approved drugs. In this respect, Cedrus species might be of interest. The essential oil isolated from Cedrus libani…

CERN ELENA project progress report

2015

The Extra Low Energy Antiproton ring (ELENA) is a CERN project aiming at constructing a 30 m circumference synchrotron to further decelerate antiprotons from the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) from 5.3 MeV to 100 keV. The additional deceleration complemented by an electron cooler to reduce emittances will allow the existing AD experiments to increase substantially their antiproton capture efficiencies and render new experiments possible. The ELENA design is now well advanced and the project has entered the construction stage, in particular for what concerns the infrastructure. Installation of the machine components is foreseen during the second half of 2015 and beginning of 2016 followed by ri…

Comparative study to predict toxic modes of action of phenols from molecular structures.

2013

Quantitative structure-activity relationship models for the prediction of mode of toxic action (MOA) of 221 phenols to the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis using atom-based quadratic indices are reported. The phenols represent a variety of MOAs including polar narcotics, weak acid respiratory uncouplers, pro-electrophiles and soft electrophiles. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and four machine learning techniques (ML), namely k-nearest neighbours (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM), classification trees (CTs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), have been used to develop several models with higher accuracies and predictive capabilities for distinguishing between four MOAs. M…

Synthesis of the new ring system 6,8-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-h]quinazoline

2009

Abstract A convenient synthesis of the pyrrolo[3,4- h ]quinazoline ring system is reported. Our synthetic approach consisted of the annelation of a pyrimidine ring to an isoindole moiety using tetrahydroisoindole-4-ones as building blocks. The antiproliferative activity of the new compounds was investigated and one of them showed antitumor activity against all the 59 tested cell lines at micromolar concentrations (1.46–18.4 μM).

Rocības maksimizācijas stratēģijas Latvijas mājsaimniecībās

2018

Pricing of electricity futures based on locational price differences : The case of Finland

2018

We find that the pricing of Finnish electricity market futures has been inefficient during the latest 10 years, when the trading volumes of Electricity Price Area Differentials (EPADs) have more than doubled. Even though the calculated futures premium on EPADs is related to some risk measures and the variables capturing the demand and supply conditions in the spot electricity markets, there has been a significant positive excess futures premium in the Finnish market, and financial market participants should have been able to utilize this also in economic terms. This finding is new and relevant for the participants of the Nordic electricity markets also in the future, because both the specul…
