Clinical trials with a new atypical antipsychotic (Aripiprazole): gender specific information analysis.
2008
In 1993, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a guideline for the study and evaluation of gender-related differences in clinical trials. However, the extent of the implementation of these recommendations has not been systematically reviewed. To determine the proportion of women in clinical trials of Aripiprazole, a new atypical antipsychotic, and to analyze the resulting information on a gender-specific basis.A systematic review was conducted in Medline to identify randomized trials that compared this new antipsychotic drug with placebo or with typical or atypical antipsychotics in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The FDA Guideline was followed for the study and evaluation …
Secondary Osseous Integration of Cementless Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty After Internal Fixation of a Felix Type IIIB Fracture
2021
Case A 76-year-old man presented with periprosthetic tibial plateau fracture (TPF), with a completely loosened tibial component 3 weeks after cementless unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Internal fixation by buttress plating was performed, and the tibial component was retained and left in situ primarily as a spacer. Revision was planned after fracture consolidation, but at 3 months, the patient was able to walk without support, without pain, and with full range of motion. At 1 year, he is free of complaints. The initial loosened tibial component reintegrated. Conclusion Internal fixation combined with preserving the loosened tibial component may be a treatment option for TPF involvi…
Many body modes of antiproton annihilation tested with antiproton production
1992
We study the inclusive (y,¯ p) and (p,p) reactions in nuclei and check the sensitivity to the¯p annihilation mechanisms. We find that including the many body annihilation mechanisms in nuclei reduces appreciably the cross section of these reactions with respect to the evaluation considering only the one body mechanism of¯p annihilation. This shows that the¯p production reactions are more sensitive to¯p annihilation than the direct¯p annihilation reactions and makes the production experiments very useful tools to investigate the complex mechanisms of¯p annihilation in nuclei.
Numerical simulation of linear fiction welding (LFW) processes
2011
Solid state welding processes are becoming increasingly important due to a large number of advantages related to joining ''unweldable'' materials and in particular light weight alloys. Linear friction welding (LFW) has been used successfully to bond non-axisymmetric components of a range of materials including titanium alloys, steels, aluminum alloys, nickel, copper, and also dissimilar material combinations. The technique is useful in the research of quality of the joints and in reducing costs of components and parts of the aeronautic and automotive industries.LFW involves parts to be welded through the relative reciprocating motion of two components under an axial force. In such process t…
DNA origami as a nanoscale template for protein assembly
2009
We describe two general approaches to the utilization of DNA origami structures for the assembly of materials. In one approach, DNA origami is used as a prefabricated template for subsequent assembly of materials. In the other, materials are assembled simultaneously with the DNA origami, i.e. the DNA origami technique is used to drive the assembly of materials. Fabrication of complex protein structures is demonstrated by these two approaches. The latter approach has the potential to be extended to the assembly of multiple materials with single attachment chemistry.
An asymmetric electrospun membrane for the controlled release of ciprofloxacin and FGF-2: Evaluation of antimicrobial and chemoattractant properties.
2021
Here, an asymmetric double-layer membrane has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning as a tool for a potential wound healing application. A hydrophobic layer has been produced by using a polyurethane-polycaprolactone (PU-PCL) copolymer and loaded with the antibacterial ciprofloxacin whereas an ion responsive hydrophilic layer has been produced by using an octyl derivative of gellan gum (GG-C8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with the growth factor FGF-2. This study investigated how the properties of this asymmetric membrane loaded with actives, were influenced by the ionotropic crosslinking of the hydrophilic layer. In particular, the treatment in DPBS and the crosslinking i…
Ab initio structure determination and quantitative disorder analysis on nanoparticles by electron diffraction tomography.
2017
Nanoscaled porous materials such as zeolites have attracted substantial attention in industry due to their catalytic activity, and their performance in sorption and separation processes. In order to understand the properties of such materials, current research focuses increasingly on the determination of structural features beyond the averaged crystal structure. Small particle sizes, various types of disorder and intergrown structures render the description of structures at atomic level by standard crystallographic methods difficult. This paper reports the characterization of a strongly disordered zeolite structure, using a combination of electron exit-wave reconstruction, automated diffrac…
Incorporation of an antibiotic in poly(lactic acid) and polypropylene by melt processing
2016
Purpose In this work an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CFX), was incorporated into 2 different polymeric matrices, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), to provide them with antimicrobial properties. The influence of CFX content on release kinetics and on antimicrobial and mechanical properties was evaluated. Methods CFX was incorporated into both the polymers by melt mixing. Results The effect of CFX incorporation was found to strongly depend on which polymer matrix was used. In particular, the antimicrobial tests revealed that PLA samples containing CFX produced no inhibition zone and only a slight antibacterial activity was observed when the highest concentration of CFX was added t…

Scheduling shared continuous resources on many-cores
2014
We consider the problem of scheduling a number of jobs on m identical processors sharing a continuously divisible resource. Each job j comes with a resource requirement rj∈[0,1]. The job can be processed at full speed if granted its full resource requirement. If receiving only an x-portion of r_j, it is processed at an x-fraction of the full speed. Our goal is to find a resource assignment that minimizes the makespan (i.e., the latest completion time). Variants of such problems, relating the resource assignment of jobs to their processing speeds, have been studied under the term discrete-continuous scheduling. Known results are either very pessimistic or heuristic in nature. In this paper, …
