Model of partial crystallization and melting derived from small-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopic studies on low-density polyethylene

1980

A temperature-dependent small-angle x-ray scattering and electron microscopic study on a sample of low-density polyethylene affords a determination of the structure changes in a heating and cooling cycle and suggests a new model of partial crystallization and melting. The analysis of SAXS data is based upon some general properties of the electron-density correlation function. Electron micrographs are obtained from stained sections γ irradiated at elevated temperatures and are analyzed quantitatively by statistical means. According to the model proposed here the thickness distribution in the amorphous layers, rather than that of the crystalline regions, is the essential factor governing the …

Hydrogen-Related Paramagnetic Centers in Ge-Doped Sol-Gel Silica Induced by γ-Ray Irradiation

2006

We have studied the generation mechanisms of H(II) paramagnetic centers in Ge-doped silica by investigating up to 104 mol ppm sol-gel Ge-doped silica materials. We have considered materials with the same concentrations of Ge but that are produced by two different densification routes that give rise to different concentrations of Ge-related oxygen deficient centers (GeODC(II)). These centers are characterized by an optical absorption band at ∼5.2 eV (B2 β band) and two related emissions at ∼3.2 eV and ∼4.3 eV. The GeODC(II) content was estimated by absorption and emission measurements. The H(II) centers were induced by room temperature γ-ray irradiation and their concentration was determined…

Effects of irradiation damage on the back-scattering of electrons: silicon-implanted silicon

2007

Radiation damage in an (initially crystalline) silicon wafer was generated by microbeam implantation with 600 keV Si+ ions (fluence 5 x 1014 ions/cm²). To produce micro-areas with different degrees of damage, 14 implantations at different temperatures (between 23 and 225 °C) were done. The structural state of irradiated areas was characterized using Raman spectroscopy and electron back-scatter diffraction. All irradiated areas showed strong structural damage in surficial regions (estimated depth <1 μm), and at implant substrate temperatures of below 130 °C, the treatment has caused complete amorphization. Back-scattered electron (BSE) images exhibited that observed BSE intensities correlate…

Character of the Reaction between Molecular Hydrogen and a Silicon Dangling Bond in Amorphous SiO2

2007

The passivation by diffusing H2 of silicon dangling bond defects (E′ centers, O3tSi•) induced by laser irradiation in amorphous SiO2 (silica) is investigated in situ at several temperatures. It is found that the reaction between the E′ center and H2 requires an activation energy of 0.39 eV and that its kinetics is not diffusionlimited. The results are compared with previous findings on the other fundamental paramagnetic point defect in silica, the oxygen dangling bond, which features completely different reaction properties with H2. Furthermore, a comparison is proposed with literature data on the reaction properties of surface E′ centers, of E′ centers embedded in silica films, and with th…

Surface acceleration during dry laser cleaning of silicon

1999

We report on measurements of the surface acceleration for the application of dry laser cleaning. For that purpose, industrial silicon samples were irradiated by a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The surface displacement was measured by a heterodyne interferometer and recorded by a digital storage oscilloscope. Several hundreds of shots were averaged to give smooth displacement curves which could be derived numerically. The experiments show that the highest accelerations, which are thought to be responsible for the cleaning, occur on the time scale of the laser pulse. Simple theoretical models are in good agreement with the experimental data. The maximal displacement depends only …

Wavelength selective light-induced magnetic effects in the binuclear spin crossover compound{[Fe(bt)(NCS)2]2(bpym)}

2007

Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and magnetic susceptibility measurements under light irradiation, the selective light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) and the reversible-LIESST effect have been evidenced and studied in depth in the binuclear spin crossover compound {[Fe(bt)(NCS)2]2bpym}. In this system, each magnetic site can switch from low spin (LS) to high spin (HS), so that three states exist, namely, the LS-LS, HS-LS, and HS-HS. All these techniques shine a new light on the high phototunability of this system. In addition to the direct photoswitching from the LS-LS to the HS-LS or to the HS-HS state, here we show that photoinduced switching…

LIESST Effect in Fe(II) 1,2,4-Triazole Chains

2016

One-dimensional Fe(II) chains with 1,2,4-triazole as bridging ligands present the LIESST effect; i.e. their spin state switched from low-spin to high-spin after light irradiation at low temperature. This account summarizes the findings in this area of photomagnetism where 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy was used as a primary detection tool of the LIESST effect.

Laser irradiation of ZnO:Al/Ag/ZnO:Al multilayers for electrical isolation in thin film photovoltaics

2013

Laser irradiation of ZnO:Al/Ag/ZnO:Al transparent contacts is investigated for segmentation purposes. The quality of the irradiated areas has been experimentally evaluated by separation resistance measurements, and the results are complemented with a thermal model used for numerical simulations of the laser process. The presence of the Ag interlayer plays two key effects on the laser scribing process by increasing the maximum temperature reached in the structure and accelerating the cool down process. These evidences can promote the use of ultra-thin ZnO:Al/ Ag/ZnO:Al electrode in large-area products, such as for solar modules. © 2013 Crupi et al.; licensee Springer.

Influence of laminated architectures of heterostructured CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films on photodegradation performances

2020

Abstract The development of photocatalytically active films has gained a great attention in recent years. Herein, new heterostructured films associating ZnO and CeO2 or Fe2O3 and exhibiting various architectures were prepared by the solution precursor thermal spray (SPPS) process. The paper examines the effect of the films laminated architectures on the photodegradation performance. For CeO2-ZnO and Fe2O3-ZnO films, the photodegradation efficiency of the Orange II dye is 100% and 95% after 240 min UV light irradiation and after 360 min visible light irradiation, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the laminated structures was found to depend on the materials used to construct the h…
