Focal switch: a new effect in low-Fresnel-number systems

2010

It is shown for the first time we believe, that when a spherical wave illuminates a certain type of diffracting screen, in addition to the expected focal-shift effect, depending on the value of the Fresnel number of the focusing system, a focal switch effect can appear, i.e., an increase in the height of the lateral lobe of the axial-intensity distribution over that of the central lobe.

The structure of steady, relativistic, magnetised jets with rotation

2015

We present equilibrium models of relativistic magnetised, infinite, axisymmetric jets with rotation propagating through an homogeneous, unmagnetised ambient medium at rest. The jet models are characterised by six functions defining the radial profiles of density, pressure, and the toroidal and axial components of velocity and magnetic field. Fixing the ambient pressure and the jet rest-mass density and axial components of the flow velocity and magnetic field, we analyze the influence of the toroidal magnetic field and several rotation laws on the structure of the equilibrium models. Our approach excludes by construction the analysis of the self-consistently magnetically launched jet models …

EFFECTS OF COLORED NOISE IN SHORT OVERDAMPED JOSEPHSON JUNCTION

2008

We investigate the transient dynamics of a short overdamped Josephson junction with a periodic driving signal in the presence of colored noise. We analyze noise induced henomena, specifically resonant activation and noise enhanced stability. We find that the positions both of the minimum of RA and maximum of NES depend on the value of the noise correlation time tau_c. Moreover, in the range where RA is observed, we find a non-monotonic behavior of the mean switching time as a function of the correlation time tau_c.

Suppression of timing errors in short overdamped Josephson junctions

2004

The influence of fluctuations and periodical driving on temporal characteristics of short overdamped Josephson junction is analyzed. We obtain the standard deviation of the switching time in the presence of a dichotomous driving force for arbitrary noise intensity and in the frequency range of practical interest. For sinusoidal driving the resonant activation effect has been observed. The mean switching time and its standard deviation have a minimum as a function of driving frequency. As a consequence the optimization of the system for fast operation will simultaneously lead to minimization of timing errors.

Optical kerr effect in the strong field regime

2013

The optical Kerr response of hydrogen atom submitted to a strong and short near infrared laser pulse excitation is studied by solving the full 3D time-dependent Schro¨dinger equation. The nonlinear polarization evaluated at the driving field frequency is compared to the canonical expression derived from perturbation theory. A discrepancy between the two models is observed at large intensity affecting the nonlinear propagation of short and intense laser pulses.

The Collinear Fast Beam laser Spectroscopy (Cfbs) experiment at Triumf

2016

Abstract Laser spectroscopy experiments at radioactive ion beam facilities around the world investigate properties of exotic nuclei for scientific endeavours such as, but not limited to, the investigation of nuclear structure. Advancements in experimental sensitivity and performance are continuously needed in order to extend the reach of nuclei that can be measured. The collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy ( Cfbs ) setup at Triumf , coupled to an out-of-plane radio-frequency quadrupole Paul trap, enables measurements of some of the most fundamental nuclear properties for long-lived ground and isomeric states. The first comprehensive overview of the Cfbs experiment is provided along with d…

Actively Q-switched and modelocked all-fiber lasers

2010

Here we demonstrate active mode-locking (ML) and doubly-active Q-switching mode-locking (QML) of erbium-doped strictly all-fiber lasers. The active ML mechanism relies in the acoustooptic superlattice modulation (AOSLM) effect induced when longitudinal acoustic waves are launched along a fiber Bragg grating. In both regimes - ML as well as QML - we focus on the laser behavior when the AOSLM is driven by traveling acoustic waves, and next we compare these results with those obtained when the AOSLM is driven by standing acoustic waves. In the ML regime, optical pulses were obtained of 530 mW peak power, 700 ps temporal width, at a repetition rate of 4.1 MHz. On the other hand, in the QML regi…

Acousto-optical multiple interference switches

2007

The authors introduce an alternative approach for acousto-optical light control based on the interference of light propagating through several waveguides, each subjected to a periodic refractive index modulation induced by a surface acoustic wave. The feasibility of the concept is demonstrated by the realization of an optical switch for arbitrary time intervals with an on/off contrast ratio of 20.
