Gastric Banding for Treatment of Morbid Obesity: Preliminary Results.
1995
Background: gastric banding (GB) has been used for treatment of morbid obesity. Methods: a banding device, introduced by Broadbent and consisting of a self-blocking nylon strip covered with a silicone tube, was used in 13 patients who have completed 1-year follow-up. This device was used for its mechanical properties, biocompatibility, ease of insertion and low cost. Results: at 1 year, mean excess weight loss was 51.6%, with all but one patient losing more than 25% of excess weight. Associated illnesses resolved. There were two complications (15%): one patient required band removal for self-induced vomiting and one patient required repair of an incisional hernia. Conclusions: GB has had go…
A diagnostic trap for the dermatopathologist: granulomatous reactions from cutaneous microimplants for cosmetic purposes.
2007
We present a case of late granulomatous reactions from silicone that first appeared in a site different from that of the injection causing an incorrect diagnosis of liposarcoma in the beginning. The histological picture was a cystic-macrophagic granuloma in both the injection site (upper lip) and the migrating site (paranasal regions). We think that the foreign body has undergone an antigravity migration from the upper lip to the right paranasal region. To our knowledge, such a phenomenon has not been yet reported in literature.
Congenital nephrosis, mesangial sclerosis, and distinct eye abnormalities with microcoria: An autosomal recessive syndrome
2004
We observed the occurrence of congenital nephrotic syndrome (CNS) and distinct ocular anomalies in two unrelated families. Eleven children from both families presented with a similar course of renal disease starting with nephrotic syndrome and renal failure prenatally or immediately after birth that resulted in death before the age of 2 months. Kidney histopathology showed diffuse mesangial sclerosis (DMS). Clinically obvious eye abnormalities were recognized in six of the eight patients in whom sufficient clinical data were available. Ocular anomalies included enlarged or large appearing corneae in some cases suggesting buphthalmos, and extremely narrow, nonreactive pupils (microcoria). Pa…
Nonketotic hyperglycinemia and epilepsy
2015
Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is an autosomal recessive inborn error in the glycine degradation pathway resulting in severe neurological impairment with intractable seizures and brain damage in the majority of the affected patients. Depending on the age of onset and on the outcome of the disease, severe and attenuated forms of NKH may be discriminated. During neonatal period, patients may present with early myoclonic encephalopathy; in the course of the disease, the picture of seizures changes, and multiple forms of seizures may occur. In patients with severe NKH, seizures remain persistent and resistant to anticonvulsant treatment. Variant NKH, caused by mutations resulting in a deficie…
Auditory Training in Deaf Children
2010
Deaf children are, earlier than in the past, identified and can benefit of new and highperformance devices (as cochlear implants or digital hearing aids). However, a great variability in their spoken language skills is observed (12) and first attributable to the well-known effect of the age of auditory rehabilitation (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22). The second assessment concerns the way speech disorders are treated: new technologies are not linked to any change in the way speech therapy is delivered, particularly in the field of auditory training. Auditory training constitutes an important part of the speech therapy addressed to the deaf children and must start as soon as possible. The go…
"Doctor, tengo un bulto en la axila". Adenomegalia siliconomatosa postmamoplastia de aumento: a propósito de ocho casos
2010
No encontramos roturas protésicas an…
Changes in higher-order aberrations after implantation of a foldable iris-claw lens in myopic phakic eyes
2006
Purpose To evaluate the change in higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after implantation of a foldable iris-claw phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) in myopic eyes. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods This prospective nonrandomized comparative self-controlled trial included 41 eyes that had implantation of a foldable iris-claw pIOL between July 2003 and November 2004. All patient data for HOAs (Zernike coefficient) were measured and calculated using the same pupil size preoperatively and postoperatively, and the root-mean-square (RMS) wavefront error was calculated. Examinations were performed preoperatively as well as 1 week and 3, 6, and 12 m…
A Monte Carlo-aided design of a modular 241Am-Be neutron irradiator
2013
Monte Carlo studies aimed at designing a modular 241Am-Be neutron irradiator for testing neutron detectors and personal dosimeters and processing large volume samples are reported in this study. The evaluation of the shapes and thicknesses of the moderator and shielding materials was carried out by a MCNP5 Monte Carlo simulation code. The reliability of the simulation was experimentally verified by the activation of gold foils and TLD dosimeter measurements in an irradiation cell placed at the center of the test configuration.
The effect of immersion disinfection procedures on dimensional stability of two elastomeric impression materials
2008
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of immersion disinfection procedures on the dimensional stability of two elastomeric impression materials. Impressions of a stainless steel die were made with polyether (PE) and with additionpolymerized silicone rubber (PVS). The test specimens underwent disinfection treatment by immersion in two commercially available solutions containing quaternary ammonium compounds (Sterigum Powder, SP) and glutaraldehyde plus an amino derivative (MD520, MD), respectively. The impressions were measured at 4 different time points: before any disinfection treatment (T0); after the first disinfection (T1); 6 hours after the first disinfection (T2); after th…
