Impact of the post-treatment conditions of parent silica on the silanization of n-octadecyl bonded silica packings in reversed-phase high-performance…

2001

Native mesoporous silica beads were subjected to a sequence of post-treatment procedure including hydrochloric acid treatment, calcination and subsequent rehydroxylation. The post-treated silica beads were converted into RP-18 silica by silanization with monochloro- and dimethoxy-n-octadecylsilanes, respectively. The influence of post-treatments and silanization conditions on the physico-chemical characteristics and on the chromatographic behaviour of the RP-silicas was studied. Also the changes of the pore structural parameters and the silanol group densities during the post-treatment and silanization were assessed.

Nanoparticulated Silicas with Bimodal Porosity: Chemical Control of the Pore Sizes

2008

Nanoparticulated bimodal porous silicas (NBSs) with pore systems structured at two length scales (meso- and large-meso-/macropores) have been prepared through a one-pot surfactant-assisted procedure by using a simple template agent and starting from silicon atrane complexes as hydrolytic inorganic precursors. The final bulk materials are constructed by an aggregation of pseudospherical mesoporous primary nanoparticles process, over the course of which the interparticle (textural) large pore system is generated. A fine-tuning of the procedural variables allows not only an adjustment of the processes of nucleation and growth of the primary nanoparticles but also a modulation of their subseque…

Enrichment of proteinaceous materials on a strong cation-exchange diol silica restricted access material: protein–protein displacement and interactio…

2004

A study of size exclusion and enrichment of proteins employing strong cation-exchange diol silica restricted access material (SCX-RAM) under saturation conditions is presented. Experiments were carried out with bacitracin, protamine, ribonuclease, lysozyme and bovine serum albumin as individual proteinaceous analytes as well as comprehensive binary mixtures and with human urine samples. Protein size dependent capacity features of the SCX-RAM column was observed. Bacitracin demonstrated the highest capacity followed by protamine while adsorption capacities of both ribonuclease and lysozyme were found smaller by a factor of 10. Applying binary protein samples occurring displacement effects we…

Chromogenic Detection of Nerve Agent Mimics by Mass Transport Control at the Surface of Bifunctionalized Silica Nanoparticles

2010

Chemical warfare (CW) agents are toxic chemicals that have been used in several terrorist attacks in recent years. Among CW species, nerve agents are probably the most dangerous; their high toxicity and facile synthesis underscores the need to detect these lethal compounds with quick, reliable procedures. Analytical methods based on enzymatic assays and physical measurements have generally been used to detect these hazards. However, these protocols usually have limitations such as low selectivity, poor portability, and a certain level of complexity. In recent years, several chromogenic and fluorogenic sensors, and reagents for the detection of nerve agents have been described. For instance,…

Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Neuromodulation in Patients with Chronic Lateral Epicondylalgia: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial

2021

Objective: The aim was to analyze effects of a percutaneous neuromodulation (PNM) treatment on the radial nerve, regarding pain, functionality, electrophysiologic excitability, and morphology, in patients with chronic lateral epicondylalgia (LE). Methods: Twenty-four patients with chronic unilateral elbow pain were recruited for this preliminary study and were divided into two groups: control (n = 12) and PNM group (n = 12). The subjects in the PNM group received percutaneous peripheral neurostimulation with an acupuncture needle that was located next to the nerve with ultrasound guidance. Pain using a numerical rating scale (NRS), functional ability using patient-rated tennis elbow evaluat…

History, Iconography and Digital Drawing for Architectural Heritage: The Case Study of the Church of S. Nicolò alla Kalsa in Palermo (Sicily)

2022

This contribution aims to test the efficiency of a research methodology based on an interdisciplinary approach. This is to be achieved through the case study of the disappeared church of S. Nicolò alla Kalsa in Palermo, an imposing medieval building dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and demolished after an earthquake in 1823. The reconstruction of the original configuration of this disappeared monument was achieved through traditional research sources and tools in the field of architectural and urban history, as well as architectural drawing, relying on both traditional and up-to-date digital technologies. The main source used for this virtual reconstruction is a rich h…

Autumn migration of soaring birds through the Gebel El Zeit Important Bird Area (IBA), Egypt, threatened by wind farm projects

2011

SummarySystematic bird observations were performed during autumn 2006 in the migration bottleneck area of Zeit Bay, Egypt (27.73°N, 33.51°E), situated on the coast of the Gulf of Suez, opposite southern Sinai. Owing to the strong northerly winds in that area, considerable pressure exists to construct wind farms. A total of 145,432 soaring birds, including 134,599 storks and 9,376 raptors over a period of 453.6 hours were observed between 20 August and 29 October by two teams working daily in two shifts. White Stork Ciconia ciconia and European Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus were the most numerous species (91.4% and 5.7% respectively) of all soaring birds observed. As both species migrate ear…

Fast enantiomeric separation of uniconazole and diniconazole by electrokinetic chromatography using an anionic cyclodextrin: application to the deter…

2000

The enantiomeric resolution of the fungicides uniconazole and diniconazole was performed using electrokinetic chromatography with cyclodextrins as pseudostationary phase (CD-EKC). A systematic evaluation of several chiral selectors was made. The anionic derivative carboxymethylated-gamma-cyclodextrin (CM-gamma-CD) was found to be the most appropriate for the enantioseparation of fungicides among all cyclodextrins tested. The influence of some experimental conditions such as nature and buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and temperature on the enantiomeric separation of the compounds studied was also investigated. The use of a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.5) containing 5 mM CM-gamma-CD…

Bram Stoker's Dracula y el prerrafaelismo

1995

Ferricytochrome c encapsulated in silica nanoparticles: structural stability and functional properties.

2004

Using a modified sol-gel technique, we have succeeded in encapsulating ferric cytochrome c in silica nanoparticles obtained from hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetramethylorthosilicate. Particles dimensions have been determined with dynamic light scattering; this technique yields an hydrodynamic radius of about 100 nm, each nanoparticle containing about 10(2)-10(3) proteins. If stored in the cold at low ionic strength, nanoparticles are stable for more than one week, even if a slow radius increase with time is observed. CD measurements show that encapsulated proteins exhibit substantially increased stability against guanidinium hydrochloride induced denaturation. Reduction kinetics of e…
