Efficient deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cells based on a perylenediimide-iridium-complex dyad

Cytotoxic Action of Serratia marcescens Hemolysin on Human Epithelial Cells

ABSTRACT Incubation of human epithelial cells with nanomolar concentrations of chromatographically purified Serratia marcescens hemolysin (ShlA) caused irreversible vacuolation and subsequent lysis of the cells. Vacuolation differed from vacuole formation by Helicobacter pylori VacA. Sublytic doses of ShlA led to a reversible depletion of intracellular ATP. Restoration to the initial ATP level was presumably due to the repair of the toxin damage and was inhibited by cycloheximide. Flexibility of phenylene oligomers revealed by single molecule spectroscopy

The rigidity of a p-phenylene oligomer (p-terphenyl) has been investigated by single molecule confocal fluorescence microscopy. Two different rylene diimide dyes attached to the terminal positions of the oligomer allowed for wavelength selective excitation of the two chromophores. In combination with polarization modulation the spatial orientation of the transition dipoles of both end groups could be determined independently. We have analyzed 597 single molecules in two different polymer hosts, polymethylmethacrylate and Zeonex. In vitro release of lectins by Phallusia mamillata hemocytes.

Abstract α-Lactose specific lectins are released from Phallusia mamillata hemocytes during short-term cultures. The molecular weight of the subunits, the immunological cross-reaction and the sugar specificity suggest that the released lectins are similar to those isolated from the sonicated hemocytes. Because lectin release appears to take place independently of active protein synthesis, the possibility exists that lectins are pre-formed, stored in hemocytes and released when in vitro conditions stimulate the cells.

Efficient electroluminescence from a perylenediimide fluorophore obtained from a simple solution processed OLED

Simple solution processed organic light emitting diodes are used to screen the performance of two types of highly efficient, narrow band red emitting fluorescent perylenediimides (PDIs). PDIs substituted at the diimide positions seem to form aggregates in the thin film architecture as evidenced by the shifted electroluminescent spectrum. When substituted on the bay position and when used both as the emitting and the electron transporting specie, bright electroluminescence with a narrow width around 610 nm reaching 500 cd m−2 at moderate voltages was observed, demonstrating the usefulness of these fluorophores for OLED applications.

Electronic Excitation Energy Transfer between Two Single Molecules Embedded in a Polymer Host

2007

Unidirectional electronic excitation energy transfer from a photoexcited donor chromophore to a ground state acceptor chromophore - both linked by a rigid bridge - has been investigated by low temperature high-resolution single molecule spectroscopy. Our approach allows for accurately accessing static disorder in the donor and acceptor electronic transitions and to calculate the spectral overlap for each couple. By plotting the experimentally determined transfer rates against the spectral overlap, we can distinguish and quantify Förster- and non-Förster-type contributions to the energy transfer.

1,3-Alternate calix[4]arenes, selectively functionalized by amino groups

General strategies are described to synthesize calix[4]arenes which are fixed in the 1,3-alternate conformation and substituted selectively by amino groups. These derivatives are useful starting materials for the attachment of various groups via amide bonds, as demonstrated by several examples, but may be converted also to ureas, imides or azomethines. Four amino groups may be attached to the narrow rim via(several) methylene groups as spacer by O-alkylation with omega-bromophthalimides or omega-bromonitriles. Selective Derivatization of Calix[4]arenes via Amino Groups Attached to the Wide Rim

A new strategy is proposed for the synthesis of tetraether derivatives of calix[4]arenes bearing at the wide rim nitro and phthalimido groups in well defined positions. Since both groups are precursors of amino functions, calix[4]arenes substituted by different N-acylamino residues are easily available in four steps. The essential steps during the synthesis of the precursor consist in the protection of amino groups by the formation of their phthalimides followed by ipso-nitration of the remaining tert-butylphenol ether units. This nitration occurs without side reactions at the phthalimido substituted units, in contrast to simple N-acyl derivatives.

Theoretical investigation of electronic excitation energy transfer in bichromophoric assemblies.

Electronic excitation energy transfer (EET) rates in rylene diimide dyads are calculated using second-order approximate coupled-cluster theory and time-dependent density functional theory. We investigate the dependence of the EET rates on the interchromophoric distance and the relative orientation and show that Forster theory works quantitatively only for donor-acceptor separations larger than roughly 5 nm. For smaller distances the EET rates are over- or underestimated by Forster theory depending on the respective orientation of the transition dipole moments of the chromophores.
