Abstract Origanum vulgare is a well-known medicinal plant that has been used since ancient times as an additive in foods and cosmetic preparations. The possible application of O. vulgare extracts in fish was assessed by using gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) as a marine fish model due to its importance in aquaculture. The in vitro effects of aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts of O. vulgare were tested in order to observe any immunostimulant, cytotoxic, bactericidal or antioxidant properties. Effect of Jasonia glutinosa on immune and oxidative status of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.).

Jasonia glutinosa (rock-tea, RT) has numerous biological activities. In the present work, the beneficial effects of dietary RT on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) were studied. Fish fed experimental diets containing 0 (control), 10 or 30% of RT for 15 and 30 days. Samples from skin mucus, blood, head kidney, liver and gut were obtained at 15 and 30 days. The antioxidant properties from RT were analysed such as the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. Radioprotection with natural products may be relevant to the mitigation of ionizing radiation-induced damage in mammalian systems; in this sense, propolis extracts have shown effects such as antioxidant, antitumoral, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulant. Effect of isoprinosine on IL-2, IFN-γ and IL-4 production in vivo and in vitro

The effects of an immunopotentiating drug, isoprinosine, on the splenocytes of BALB/c mice to produce cytokines were investigated. Isoprinosine enhanced IL-2 production, upregulating the expression of IL-2 receptor in vitro. It also significantly increased the IFN-gamma secretion and decreased the IL-4 production in vivo. The significance of these findings in terms of immune regulation is discussed.

The present study investigates the potential capacity of the immunostimulant Corynebacterium parvum (C.p.) to induce tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and blood monocytes (BMo) in vitro. Both at the mRNA and protein level, stimulation of PBMC and BMo upon C.p. induces TNF-alpha. Compared to the hitherto used TNF-alpha inducers in vitro such as Sendai virus, phytohemagglutinin or lipopolysaccharide the C.p. stimulus displayed a threefold stronger induction of TNF-alpha production (p less than 0.001). Radioprotective activity and cytogenetic effect of resveratrol in human lymphocytes: An in vitro evaluation

Trans-resveratrol is a natural occurring polyphenol, obtained from grapes and other berries. This compound has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant or anti-carcinogenic properties. Our aim was to evaluate the radioprotective efficacy, in vitro, of trans-resveratrol against radiation-induced chromosomal damage and to study the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of this polyphenol in cell cultures without irradiation. The study was carried out by the pre-treatment of human lymphocytes at concentrations from 0 to 219μM of trans-resveratrol. Self-adjuvanting synthetic antitumor vaccines from MUC1 glycopeptides conjugated to T-cell epitopes from tetanus toxoid.

The T-helper epitope peptide P30 (green in the scheme) from tetanus toxoid was used as the immunostimulant in MUC1 glycopeptide antitumor vaccines and apparently also acts as a built-in adjuvant. P30-conjugated glycopeptide vaccines containing three glycans in the immunodominant motifs PDTRP and GSTAP induced much stronger immune responses and complement dependent cytotoxicity mediated killing of tumor cells when applied in plain PBS solution without complete Freund's adjuvant.

Purpose The PRAME tumour antigen is expressed in several tumour types but in few normal adult tissues. A dose-escalation phase I/II study (NCT01149343) assessed the safety, immunogenicity and clinical activity of the PRAME immunotherapeutic (recombinant PRAME protein (recPRAME) with the AS15 immunostimulant) in patients with advanced melanoma.
