THE NATURE AND SOURCE OF MAJOR MAGMATIC VOLATILES: OPEN-VENT DEGASSING VOLCANOES IN THE CENTRAL AMERICAN VOLCANIC ARC

Major volatiles play an important role in subduction zone magmatism, from magma generation in the mantle, to crustal ascent and evolution, until its dramatic expression during a volcanic eruption. In the attempt to add a piece of information on source and behavior of major volatiles in arc volcanism, I here report on the geochemistry of H2O, CO2, S and Cl in two volcanic systems in NW Nicaragua (Central America), San Cristóbal and Telica. The observational approach is based upon combination of some of the most recent techniques in volcanic gas monitoring and petrology. I here explore quiescent and eruptive degassing processes by combining both volcanic gas and melt inclusion approaches. Fie…

Benefits of formal voluntary work among older people. A review

2011

Background and aims: A narrative review of quantitative population-based longitudinal studies was conducted to examine the association of formal voluntary work and personal well-being among older people doing the voluntary work and those being served. Methods: To be included, the study had to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, written in English and conducted in Western countries, participants were at least 60 years of age, the study employed a longitudinal or experimental design, the methodology and outcomes were explicitly described, and voluntary work quantified as visits or hours within a certain time frame. Results: Sixteen studies out of 2897 met the inclusion criteria for the r…

PETROLOGICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE PRE-ERUPTIVE CONDITIONS OF LA SOMMATA BASALT AND BROWN TUFFS TEPHRA (AEOLIAN ISLANDS)

2011

This work is focused on two key eruptions of Vulcano Island: 1) the most primitive magma of Vulcano erupted by the La Sommata scoria cone, a silica-undersaturated Ca-rich shoshonitic basalt with olivine-hosted primitive melt inclusions having an ultra-calcic character; 2) the most energetic eruptions of the whole Aeolian Archipelago, the Brown Tuffs (BT) eruptions, which produced several pyroclastic deposits, covering an ample age interval, spread out over a large portion of all Aeolian islands up to the northern coast of Sicily (Lucchi et al., 2008). By complementary studies of melt inclusions and experimental petrology, we pursued the following main objectives: (i) to constrain the pressu…

Seeking the mantle source and storage system of carbonatite magmas: case studies from Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) and Mt. Vulture volcano (souther…

Carbonatite magmatism is mainly associated with intraplate continental tectonic settings, with a temporal distribution from Archean to the present. The growing number of carbonatite occurrences from unconventional tectonic settings, such as oceanic contexts (e.g., Carnevale et al., 2021) or subduction zones (e.g., D’Orazio et al., 2007), received considerable attention during last two decades, given their importance as source of rare elements, and, most importantly, because they provide meaningful information about the geochemical cycle of carbon and mantle metasomatism as well. This work shows how the study of fluids trapped within minerals from carbonatites and carbonatite magmas can prov…

Teachers’ Knowledge Regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Systematic Review

2021

The increasing number of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainstream education environments require teachers to know how to identify their needs, being capable to adapt their education processes and make their inclusion easier. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review about teachers’ knowledge of ASD, including teachers from any stage and specialization. The research has been conducted from four databases (Web of Science, Scopus, PsycInfo and Google Scholar) during the period of 2015–2020. In total, 25 articles were analyzed. The results show that, in general, teachers’ knowledge of ASD is poor. It depends on the education stage (being higher in early child…

Influence of Social Networks from Cellphones to Choose Restaurants, Salinas – 2016

2018

Inclusion of technology as part of business strategies has made consumers have other tools that help them to find information and making consumer decisions. It is here the importance of knowing influence of comments have in social networks in taking decisions of visits to restaurants. For this work, a qualitative method (focal group) was used in the first part and then a quantitative method was used (off line and online survey). The sample for focal group was made up by Equinoctial Technological University’s students in Santa Elena, the same ones belonged to the careers of Finance and Audit (7 students), Business and Business (1 student) and 2 graduates of the Finance and Audit. An experime…

SIS-M

2012

In this paper we describe the outcome of the SIS-M project, consisting in the development of web support system for the teacher of an inclusive school. In this kind of centers, the ordinary training is developed with people with disabilities. Although the availability of adequate supports, the management of the school and the heterogeneity of students requires tools that help in day to day. SIS-M provides tools that supports the basic management of the school, and due to the use of natural language processing tools, ontologies and location in real time, allows that the educator could receive the sugestion of activities that the system considers most appropriate for students in class at all …

Inclusion complexes of cyclomaltooligosaccharides (cyclodextrins) with melatonin in solid phase

2005

Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) investigations were carried out on MLT plus α-, β- and γ-CD physical mixtures and lyophilized or crystalline MLT/α-, β-, γ-CD complexes. Inclusion complexes formation between MLT and cyclodextrins in solid phase has been emphasized by the significant differences between IR and XRD spectra of physical mixtures with respect to those of the complexes. The structure of MLT CDs complexes in the solid state as well as the biochemical and pharmaceutical implications are discussed.

New evidence of mantle heterogeneity beneath the Hyblean Plateau (southeast Sicily, Italy) as inferred from noble gases and geochemistry of ultramafi…

2012

Abstract We analyzed major and trace elements, Sr and Nd isotopes in ultramafic xenoliths in Miocenic age Hyblean diatremes, along with noble gases of CO2-rich fluid inclusions hosted in the same products. The xenoliths consist of peridotites and pyroxenites, which are considered to be derived from the upper mantle. Although the mineral assemblage of peridotites and their whole-rock abundance of major elements (e.g., Al2O3 = 0.8–1.5 wt.%, TiO2 = 0.03–0.08 wt.%) suggest a residual character of the mantle, a moderate enrichment in some incompatible elements (e.g., LaN/YbN = 9–14) highlights the presence of cryptic metasomatic events. In this context a deep silicate liquid is considered the me…

The Zero Violence Brave Club: A Successful Intervention to Prevent and Address Bullying in Schools

2021

Bullying among peers in schools is a growing problem affecting children and adolescents from an early age worldwide. The consequences of bullying victimization in the emotional development of children and youth and their academic achievement are adverse for them and the rest of the school community, with its negative impact extending into the mid and long run. The Zero Violence Brave Club is implemented in schools in the framework of the Dialogic Model of Violence Prevention, a successful educational action according to the INCLUD-ED project [Strategies for inclusion and social cohesion in Europe from Education] (6th Framework Program of Research of the European Commission). The Zero Violen…
