Positron Microscopy Studies of Wear Tracks on a Copper Surface

2014

Positron microscopy was used for studies of defects induced by ball indentation or sliding on the surface of well-annealed copper samples. A focused positron beam of 24.5-keV energy was used to scan the deformed region of the indenter impression, and measurements of the annihilation line parameter were performed. In the case of ball indentation, the measured defect distribution correlates well with the von Mises stress distribution of the Hertz contact and the von Mises yield criterion. For the wear track produced by pin on disc dry sliding, an asymmetric defect distribution near the wear track is observed. It indicates the presence of a tangential force that additionally deforms the sample.

Nanoscale mechanical characterization of polymers by atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentations: viscoelastic characterization of a model material

2009

The atomic force microscope (AFM), apart from its conventional use as a microscope, is also used for the characterization of the local mechanical properties of polymers. In fact, the elastic characterization of purely elastic materials using this instrument can be considered as a well-assessed technique while the characterization of the viscoelastic mechanical properties remains the challenge. In particular, one finds the mechanical behavior changing when performing indentations at different loading rates, i.e. on different time scales. Moreover, this apparent viscoelastic behavior can also be due to complex contact mechanics phenomena, with the onset of plasticity and long-term viscoelasti…

Prediction and analysis of high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) sprayed coating using artificial neural network

2019

Abstract Thermal spray comprises a group of coating processes for coating manufacturing in which metallic or nonmetallic materials are deposited in a molten or semi-molten condition. Most often, the coating properties are significantly influenced by the operating parameters. However, obtaining a comprehensive modeling or analytical analysis of the thermal spray process is too difficult to be practical due to the complex chemical and thermodynamic reactions. Accordingly, the present study aims at applying an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the HVOF sprayed Cr3C2−25NiCr coatings and analyze the influence of operating parameters regardless of the intermediate process. The proce…

Quantification of Plasma Sprayed Coating Adhesion Using Pulsed Laser Induced Decohesion Technique

2001

Abstract The aim of the present study is to compare a laser ultrasonic technique with a conventional indentation test for the determination of intrinsic properties and the adhesion of alumina coatings, of different thicknesses (30–350 µm), deposited on stainless steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). For this purpose, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to irradiate the coated specimens, and the ultrasonic waves generated by the laser are recorded at the epicenter using a laser interferometer. In the thermoelastic regime, the good agreement between the experiment and computation allows determination of the longitudinal wave velocity as well as the Young's modulus of the oxide coat…

Microhardness and adhesion measurements of reactively sputtered TiN/AlN multilayer coatings deposited as function of mass-flow of nitrogen

1998

Abstract Multilayer coatings of (Ti, Al)N x have been deposited by reactive sputtering from Ti and Al targets in a side-by-side configuration on WC and stainless steel substrates. The rotation of the substrate holder varied from 2 to 14 r.p.m. corresponding to a bilayer thickness of 0.8–8 nm. The acoustic emission scratch technique for adhesion measurements was used for studying coating performance, and critical load values for the coatings on WC substrate up to 150 N were obtained. The Vickers microhardness in the load range 0.003–2 N was measured, and in order to obtain true hardness values, an optimal range of indentation depth and coating thickness was determined. Depending on the nitro…

Physical-mechanical effects of Nd:YAG laser on the surface of sound dental enamel.

1993

Human dental enamel samples were irradiated using a 5 kHz Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser. An increase in Knoop microhardness and modification of the membrane permselectivity were detached. These results and the changes observed by SEM, can be connected with the fusion of the enamel surface.

Could sonic delivery of bulk-fill resins improve the bond strength and cure depth in extended size class I cavities?

2020

Background The implementation of restorative procedures that guarantee success and optimize clinical time is the target of investigations in Restorative Dentistry. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sonic insertion of bulk-fill (BF) and conventional (C) resin composites on the microtensile bond-strength (µ-TBS) and cure depth (CD) of large and deep class I restorations. Material and Methods Fifty-six healthy human premolars were selected and occlusal cavities (4 x 4 x 3 mm; factor C = 5) were prepared. TC - Tetric N-Ceram (BF), SF - SonicFill (BF), and Z350 - Filtek Z350 XT (C) composite resins were used to restore the cavities, using sonic (S) and non-sonic (NS) insertion techniq…

Mechanical properties of sol–gel derived SiO2 nanotubes

2014

The mechanical properties of thick-walled SiO2 nanotubes (NTs) prepared by a sol–gel method while using Ag nanowires (NWs) as templates were measured by using different methods. In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) cantilever beam bending tests were carried out by using a nanomanipulator equipped with a force sensor in order to investigate plasticity and flexural response of NTs. Nanoindentation and three point bending tests of NTs were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) under ambient conditions. Half-suspended and three-point bending tests were processed in the framework of linear elasticity theory. Finite element method simulations were used to extract Young’s modulus values…

Flexural strength and microhardness of anterior composites after accelerated aging

2016

Background This study aimed to evaluate the flexural strength and microhardness of three different anterior composites after 10 000 thermocycles. Material and Methods The mechanical properties of a nano-fill composite (Filtek Ultimate Universal Restorative (FUR) (Enamel)), a nano-hybrid composite (Clearfil Majesty ES2 (ES2) (Enamel)), and a micro-hybrid composite (G Aenial Anterior (GAA)) were investigated in this study. For the microhardness test, 8-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness composite discs were used (n = 10), and for the flexural strength test, 25x2x2 mm bar-shaped specimens were prepared (n = 13). The specimens were tested at 24 h and after 10 000 thermocycles. Data were analyzed us…
