On the dynamics of eco-efficiency performance in the European Union

2016

This paper evaluates the evolution of environmental performance in the context of the European Union (EU), over the period 1993–2010. The context is particularly relevant, due to the traditionally high concerns of the EU about these issues, which has triggered off several initiatives and regulations on environmental protection. In this setting, we conduct a two-stage analysis which develops environmental performance indicators in the first stage for each pair country-year, and evaluates its evolution in the second. More specifically, in the first stage we estimate specific efficiencies for three air-pollutants (CO2e, SO2, NOx), along with an eco-efficiency indicator, for which we use the sl…

Cytotoxicity and induction of DNA double-strand breaks by components leached from dental composites in primary human gingival fibroblasts

2012

Abstract Introduction The public interest steadily increases in the biological adverse effects caused by components released from resin-based dental restorations. Objective In this study, the cytotoxicity and the genotoxicity were investigated of following released components from dental resin restorations in human gingival fibroblasts (HGF): tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEEGDMA), neopentylglycol dimethacrylate (Neopen), diphenyliodoniumchloride (DPIC), triphenyl-stibane (TPSB) and triphenylphosphane (TPP). Methods XTT based cell viability assay was used for cytotoxicity screening of substances. γ-H2AX assay was used for genotoxicity screening. In the γ-H2AX assay, HGFs were exposed …

Studies on the apoptotic activity of natural and synthetic retinoids: discovery of a new class of synthetic terphenyls that potently support cell gro…

2005

New terphenyl derivatives have been synthesized and tested for their effect on cell survival in serum-free cultures. These compounds protected HL60 cells from death and supported their growth with an activity higher than that of the natural 14-hydroxy-retro-retinol. Terphenyls 26 and 28 also possess antiapoptotic activity on neuronal cells, proving them as possible candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative and ischemic diseases.

Development and characterization of mouse anti-human LMP2, LMP7, TAP1 and TAP2 monoclonal antibodies.

2008

Low molecular mass polypeptides (LMP) 2 and LMP7 and transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) subunits TAP1 and TAP2 play a crucial role in antigen processing and cell surface expression of HLA class I molecules. Since monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to these molecules will facilitate the analysis of their expression, structure and function in normal and transformed cells, in the present study we have developed these reagents. Specifically anti-LMP2 and LMP7 mAb were generated from BALB/c mice immunized with specific peptides, and anti-TAP1 and TAP2 mAb from BALB/c mice immunized with respective recombinant proteins. mAb VF101-39F7 and VF101-39G5 were shown to be specific for LMP2, …

Working conditions, job strain, and traffic safety among three groups of public transport drivers

2018

Background: Working conditions and psychosocial work factors have acquired an important role explaining the well-being and performance of professional drivers, including those working in the field of public transport. This study aimed to examine the association between job strain and the operational performance of public transport drivers and to compare the expositions with psychosocial risk at work of three different types of transport workers: taxi drivers, city bus drivers, and interurban bus drivers. Method: A sample of 780 professional drivers was drawn from three transport companies in Bogota (Colombia). The participants answered the Job Content Questionnaire and a set of sociodemogra…

A Comparative Analysis of Hospital Readmissions in France and the US

2015

International audience; Policymakers in the US and France are struggling to improve coordination among hospitals and other health care providers. A comparison of hospital readmission rates, and the factors that may explain them, can provide important insights about the French and US health care systems. In addition, it illustrates a methodological approach to comparative research: how an empirical inquiry along a single indicator can reveal broader issues about system-wide differences across health care systems and policy. Using data from three French regions, the article extends a previous national-level comparison indicating that rates of hospital readmission for the population aged 65+ a…

Preliminary development of a questionnaire to measure the extra-pulmonary symptoms of severe asthma

2021

Abstract Background Research into the effects of asthma treatments on the extra-pulmonary symptoms of severe asthma is limited by the absence of a suitable questionnaire. The aim was to create a questionnaire suitable for intervention studies by selecting symptoms that are statistically associated with asthma pathology and therefore may improve when pathology is reduced. Methods Patients attending a specialist asthma clinic completed the 65-item General Symptom Questionnaire (GSQ-65), a questionnaire validated for assessing symptoms of people with multiple medically unexplained symptoms. Lung function (FEV1%) and cumulative oral corticosteroids (OCS) calculated from maintenance dose plus ex…

In-hospital mortality following lung cancer resection: nationwide administrative database.

2016

Our aim was to determine the effect of a national strategy for quality improvement in cancer management (the “Plan Cancer”) according to time period and to assess the influence of type and volume of hospital activity on in-hospital mortality (IHM) within a large national cohort of patients operated on for lung cancer. From January 2005 to December 2013, 76 235 patients were included in the French Administrative Database. Patient characteristics, hospital volume of activity and hospital type were analysed over three periods: 2005–2007, 2008–2010 and 2011–2013.Global crude IHM was 3.9%: 4.3% during 2005–2007, 4% during 2008–2010 and 3.5% during 2011–2013 (p<0.01). 296, 259 and 209 centres p…
