Machining Economics and Optimization
2008
This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding economical considerations and possible optimization methods of machining operations. The background of machining economics, including costs, time and productivity, related for typical machining operations (such as turning, milling and drilling) is outlined. The components of machining costs and time related to the cutting speed are distinguished, and appropriate mathematical models are presented. Optimization procedures allowing selection of optimal values of cutting speed and feed rate based on tool life and energy efficiency criteria are overviewed. In the first case, the economic cutting speed and cutting speed corresponding to the …
Optimization methods for complex sheet metal stamping computer aided engineering
2010
Nowadays, sheet metal stamping processes design is not a trivial task due to the complex issues to be taken into account (complex shapes forming, conflicting design goals and so on). Therefore, proper design methodologies to reduce times and costs have to be developed mostly based on computer aided procedures. In this paper, a computer aided approach is proposed with the aim to offer a methodology able to solve very complex sheet metal stamping processes, in particular a progressive design approach based on the integration between numerical simulations and optimization methodologies is presented. In particular, Response Surface Method, Moving Least Squares approximation and Pareto optimal s…
Analysis, Modeling and Simulation of Complex Regional Clusters Activities, Using Arena Simulation Software
2014
Process modelling is the concise description of the total variation in one quantity, y, by partitioning it into a deterministic component given by a mathematical function of one or more other quantities, x1, x2... plus a random component that follows a particular probability distribution. The models are material or immaterial systems, which represent other systems, so that it may be possible to manipulate the built structures and their states. The main elements of a simulation are: attributes (describe and differentiate entities), variables (system characteristics), resources (whose capacity can be variable), tails (seen in case of unavailability of resources) and statistical accumulators (…
Variation Mode and Effect Analysis: a Practical Tool for Quality Improvement
2006
This paper describes a statistically based engineering method, variation mode and effect analysis (VMEA), that facilitates an understanding of variation and highlights the product/process areas in which improvement efforts should be targeted. An industrial application is also described to illustrate how the VMEA can be used for quality improvement purposes. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Preliminary analysis of warehouse localization systems based on RFID technology
2010
In the industrial warehouse design domain, today's computerized information systems have gained a relevant interest due to the issues related to asset tracking and traceability. In such context, the employment of new information technologies on warehouse management systems has opened new business opportunities due to the sensible price reduction in the last years. This paper focuses on the technical issues related to the realization of wireless localization systems for warehouses, which are necessary for the implementation of random allocation policies, and in particular investigates the opportunities offered by RFID technology in such context. The enforcement of random allocation policies …
A comprehensive tool for efficient design and operation of polygeneration-based energy μgrids serving a cluster of buildings. Part I: Description of …
2013
Polygeneration systems with thermal energy storage represent promising solutions to achieve energy saving and emissions reduction in the civil sector. The definition of customer-oriented design and operation strategies represents a most challenging task, in order to maximize the profitability and make the investment attractive. A large potential is often recognized for the installation of centralized plants serving a cluster of buildings located over a small area; in such cases the design problem becomes extremely complex and the analyst needs reliable instruments to identify the optimal solution. This paper in two parts presents a scientific tool for the optimization of design and operatio…
A Virtual Milling Machine Model to Generate Machine-Monitoring Data for Predictive Analytics
2015
Real data from manufacturing processes are essential to create useful insights for decision-making. However, acquiring real manufacturing data can be expensive and time consuming. To address this issue, we implement a virtual milling machine model to generate machine monitoring data from process plans. MTConnect is used to report the monitoring data. This paper presents (1) the characteristics and specification of milling machine tools, (2) the architecture for implementing the virtual milling machine model, and (3) the integration with a simulation environment for extending to a virtual shop floor model. This paper also includes a case study to explain how to use the virtual milling machin…
Improving Maintenance Activities of Machine Tools
2013
The paper follows the current trends in the field of maintenance, proposing approaches that fit in the concept of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). First it is presented a new proposal for tracking in-service machine tools. This is based on the identification of three operating states: good running condition, state of repair and stationary state. During the stationary state there are differentiated two distinct types of stops: natural stays and unproductive stays (those who often produce considerable losses). Based on the information contained in the records made for tracking the operation of machine tools there are proposed formulas for calculating some operational indicators and practic…
Management Structure Based Government Enterprise Architecture Framework Adaption in Situ
2017
Part 1: Regular Papers; International audience; The fragmentation of the public sector makes it difficult to manage strategically and architecturally as a whole. Enterprise Architecture (EA) is considered as an improvement to that. Architectural modeling and visualization of the general management strategy plans along with parallel database development in a local government forms the primary data in the longitudinal case study using Action Design Research Method. To find a proper organizational fit for the EA framework in public sector, we reflect on how the current state architectural descriptions got organized in situ in a deep corporate hierarchy, and what were the emerging management ne…
Identifiability analysis for receiving water body quality modelling
2009
In urban drainage, new computational possibilities have supported the development of new integrated approaches aimed at joint water quantity and quality analysis of the whole urban drainage system. Although the benefit of an integrated approach has been widely demonstrated, to date, several aspects prevent its applicability such as scarce availability of field data if compared with model complexity. These aspects sometimes prevent the correct estimation of parameters thus leading to large uncertainty in modelling response. This is a typical parameter identifiability problem that is discussed in the present paper evaluating the effect of identifiability procedures in increasing operator conf…
